Tuesday Blues #235 - mybgi.net/2GTl0FX
Chords are chords, right?
Well sure they are but I find that a few chord shapes are super handy to a fingerpicker. Especially a blues player relying on that gritty dominant 7th chord sound.
In this lesson we dive into 5 great chord shapes that you need to know as a fingerpicker. The Big G covered in the lesson will give you a ton of options and the others are super useful because they can be moved all over the fretboard.
If you need help getting used to the Long A stretch, check this lesson out: mybgi.net/tb87
We’ll cover a few fingerpicking exercises that will help you put these shapes to use and see their real power.
Grab your guitar and let’s get pickin!

this lesson opens up so much. suddenly everything makes sense. expertly taught priceless secrets. and the beauty of this knowledge is the mileage we can get out this information. quite possibly the best fingerpicking blues lesson i've ever seen. endless hours of fun usable practice, endless room to expand with your own ideas, great for solo pieces or jamming with others, and, i'd venture, once we have solidified the moves practically and theoretically, it will transfer to electric playing styles to brighten up and create new exciting options and paths there as well. long reply, but i had a lot of thanks to express. maybe most importantly, it makes you want to pick up your guitar ! thank you

I am so glad you work this stuff out for me John. Those of us “older” guys (and gals) that have picked up guitar later in life and are just enjoying the journey are not really interested in digging deep and figuring this stuff out on our own. You make learning this stuff a joy. Anybody that is interested in acoustic blues or fingerpicking in general should join BGI!

Very interesting lesson. So far I have been able to use my thumb and index finger. I have Parkinson's disease and deal with my hands shaking a lot. My 3rd and 4th fingers are very stiff. They are almost useless most of the time. I will learn the two finger style for sure, I might take me a little longer than the average picker but I will learn to finger pick. i really like the way you lay out the lessons. do you have instructions on Mississippi country Blues. I heard one of those songs and it really caught my attention

Thanks, buddy. I was looking for some simple fingerpicking exercises. These are perfect for working on your speed and precision, and for just warming up your fingers. Jimmy Page uses that A shape in the Stairway intro, and also the F Major 7, but this group of chords are nice, easy movable shapes for simple repetition. And they sound good too. Obviously you can make a 12 Bar song from them, but I like simple exercises that have musicality. It makes it much easier to practice for extended periods of time. If exercises aren't particularly musical, it's can be difficult to play for more than a few minutes. But one could fool around with these for hours, especially if you mix and match them where possible.

Thanks for the comment, coyote mangan! I'm on board with you, I do play some exercises that aren't musical but they feel like a chore and I enjoy ones that sound like something I'd listen to. Thanks for taking the time to comment! Cheers!

Excellent lesson John. I honestly don't know why instructors/books teach that first G shape you show instead of the G shape you accurately demonstrate and suggest as an alternative. The one you use and that all finger pickers should use makes so much more sense. Thanks.
@BluesGuitarInstitute
@BluesGuitarInstitute 5 жыл бұрын
Agreed! It took me a while to unlearn that common shape and I guess it works in certain situations but as a fingerpicker it is more limiting than anything. Thanks as always, Steve!

Thanks! I'm completely fine with it. I don't unless I switch to a thumb + 2 picking style but if it helps you get good clear notes then I say go for it.

I realy thought this was a beginner lesson, but obviously it's not, because even thou your trying to explain the cords which I find difficult in paying especially Bar cords, and also you need to tell us what the fingerpicking sequence is to.

I think it's just preference really. Tommy Emmanuel anchors and he referenced Chet Atkins for his reason to anchor. Hmmm...now I'm thinking maybe I should! 😆
@bobgreen8142
@bobgreen8142 3 жыл бұрын
@@BluesGuitarInstitute So many people say it's necessary to anchor, but I don't - I have smallish hands and my pinky fingers turn in slightly which makes anchoring feel uncomfortable and unnatural and limits my right hand movement. For the same reason I find Long A difficult, but now I have a shorter scale parlour guitar I'm getting there with it. Thanks a lot for your lessons, they are really helping to fill in the gaps in what I have taught myself.
