The Bluetones were always the thinking man's Brtipop band. I saw them at a very small gig and they were superb. One of the best Britpop bands lyrically, for sure. Expecting To Fly was a fabulous album, one of my favourite from that era.
@malcomgladstone
@malcomgladstone 27 күн бұрын
no they were not, they started as Stones Roses tribute. The thinking bands were Suede , Pulp , Radiohead and Manics, not the Bluebleddingtones

Come on, those are all much bigger acts. I meant amongst the mid-range Britpop groups, such as Dodgy, who were being referenced in this video. The Bluetones were originally touted as the next Stone Roses - high praise indeed. They also had a lot of charm as well but that might be lost on your good self, judging by the tone of your comments. 😜

I've met Mark a few times by being lucky enough to have him play in my venues in Barrow-in-Furness over the years. He's an absolute Gent and amazing musician/songwriter. Theres a story I tell people about Marks Rider. We went through a phase of getting these ridiculous riders off bands, and Im talking Mars ice cream bars and obscure flavours of hummus! The riders were like a weeks shopping for some bands. So when Mark played and we got his rider, all it was, was a bottle of red wine and a pack of silk cut. Absolute legend and shows how down to earth he is :)

This was great, loved the bluetones back in the day, last chance saloon is still one of my favourite albums - sleazy bed track, U.T.A and if are honestly under-rated gems...amazing band. Why didn't you ask Mark about that dance in the video for slight return? We're all thinking about it, I am...still - decades later. Wicked, James - we need more stuff like this, absolute gold.

Thanks James and Mark, that was great. Always been a big Bluetones fan and it's good that they are recording again and touring and are all still on good terms... Mark calling out Jules Holland was great - have always thought that old Julio was a bit overrated... Adam is an absolutely brilliant, very underrated, guitarist too... Great interview. A friend and i supported Mark at a gig years ago. He was friendly, funny and very charismatic. He is the kind of guy that is impossible not to like. Outside of the first three Bluetones albums my favourite would be his solo album "A Flash of Darkness". Incredible record! In response to some of the less than kind comments, i would say that nobody will leave this earth with an unblemished record. Its how we respond and move forward that matters. The real villains are the wealthy superstars of the industry. They clearly demonstrated over the last few years that when push came to shove, they didn't really care about what happens to their fans.

I wish I'd known about this sooner, a friend supported him on tour a few years back in a tiny venue in Cambridge. Got my vinyl signed and squeeed all over the poor sod. I think I even got an awkward hug off him too. Legend. Great albums, great chaps. Far more talented than people realise. Constantly experimenting and making new sounds. I think I'm right in thinking they can all play each others instruments too.

The only time I've ever made it to the very front at a festival gig was the Bluetones at Reading in 2000, because after Limp Bizkit finished their set the whole crowd circulated like nothing I've ever seen. They were fantastic. I think I remember Mark being carried off stage 'Officer and a Gentlemen' style. Love the Bluetones!

'Expecting To Fly' was the first album I ever bought. On first listen I didn't really know what to make of it (being only 15 at the time) but after a while it really grew on me and it remains one of my favourite albums. 'Science & Nature is also great.

Met Mark when he was DJ ing years ago showed him a pic of my daughter, he was very polite and I was very pissed, met the rest of the band at a gig, Eds left a message on my answer machine for the Mrs, great bloke. I was studying in Bradford around 98-99 and the bluestones played there one night. I couldn't get tickets but met a girl with a bluestones t-shirt at the Uni Bar. Said I loved her tshirt and she wrote her number on my hand. The morning after I didn't remember much but while I was having a morning shower I saw the writing had almost disappeared ... That's how I never got to see The Bluestones live nor met that girl again...😅

They meant a lot to me in 95-96 . I saw the group three times live in that period , the first time being when they supported Supergrass , then the Bluetonic tour , then the Expecting to Fly tour . They were always good live , but I always felt their records were a bit overproduced. That said , Slight Return was a great single , and the first album was good and by far the best thing they ever did . But the music scene moved fast back then , and by the time of the follow up (Last Chance Saloon) I had largely moved on and soon completely forgot about them and what a huge fan I had been in 95-96 . It happens. But the nice memories remain nonetheless.

Yes, feel the same. I try to separate the music and happy memories of past gigs from his personal life but I can't completely. I don't like writing people off forever but I feel for the women involved (and glad they found a voice)... so for now I don't think I'd enjoy seeing the Bluetones at a gig. I guess everyone has to make their own judgement... no perfect answer.

@@chrisbailiss7309There is always at least two sides to every story and Morriss has his side as well. This has affected him in more ways than one. I don’t feel any hate towards the guy - he’s ex-wife (who was/is a journalist) went for the jugular and has definitely damaged his career. Does he deserve that? Who knows what goes on behind closed doors in any relationship.
