Thanks very much for doing this video, I have been away fro 20 odd years after life took me away from model flying. I am just about to come back and I will start again from scratch rather than try to rely on my old memories! Very helpful video, love the drone work aerial photography too!

From an SAA member. Well done, an excellent video. Only one thing I would add. Do not have a dangling neck-strap.

Really useful. A few of the details such as what ‘good’ looks like for the figure 8 will make make training more focused and effective.

It is good to have this video, thanks. Here is some feedback from my personal point of view, which will differ from others. I can fly, am self taught, fly light-weight electric foamies and wish to become a better pilot. The question part of the test is what concerns me and probably one reason why I have never taken the A test. A lot of time was spent on the model's integrity checks compared to the flying time. I would have liked the examinee to talk throughout his flight, especially his information warnings to other flyers (e.g. what would he say about his figure of 8 and counter circuit to his fellow flyers). The examinee did not show his transmitter was switched off until ready to fly, nor did he show it was switched on before connecting the battery. I would like the examinee to talk through the safety acronyms and be seen carrying them out. The model was big, powerful (6S) and expensive. Most of my models are under 1kg, 3S and cheap RTFs. The FMS SuperEZ I plan to take the test in is _just_ over 1kg. I did not relate to this model at all. I would suggest you use what most new pilots would use: small, lighter, cheaper models. I did not like the split video. It was distracting. I would prefer the manoeuvre to be seen fully in each view, one after the other. Although this is not (at least in my mind) an A test training video, I would like the BMFA to do such a thing where they use a novice pilot and show common mistakes. For example in some wind, the figure of 8 needs continual adjustment. This video pointed that out but I would have liked the examinee to have given live feedback on aerial conditions and what he was doing. The examinee made it look too slick and I was conscious of that, finding it unrealistic and off-putting. I took little away from this video unfortunately, that the written material did not cover. While there were lots of reassurances that "it will be alright", this video did nothing to reassure me. I would like to see someone real answering and fluffing questions.

I would disagree, if I was taking a driving test and the instructor was demonstrating a parallel park for example, I think it would be most useful if it was just correctly so you know what you are aiming for, and the split video was also useful, as the manoeuvers were slow and steady enough to see both angles while being performed once, video didnt need to be unnecessarily long showing them in full from multiple angles. And lastly the large model made it easier to see it without excessive zooming where you then lose all sense of perspective while watching it in a video which has a very limited field of view on a screen

A nice video but I would like to add an important comment.........I didn't see any mention of frequency channel control (unless I missed it).....There are still people using 35MHz and it is very important to ensure that frequency control measures are complied with. Appreciate that 2.4Ghz is being used here.

Sorry Mal John you don’t appear to understand plain English. I was merely asking if this plane used for the A test video had the normally supplied Spektrum receiver with AS3X stabilisation. The BMFA reply indicated that it didn’t.

Just taken the fun out of flying for me. To me this is a money making scheme.

Thank you for your comment, although it is a little odd. The achievement scheme is entirely voluntary so it is difficult to see how it takes any fun out of your flying. It does however, for those that engage with the scheme, undoubtedly improve standards of flying and safety which we are sure you will agree is a good thing. As to it being a money making scheme, nothing could be further from the truth, there are no costs involved at all in taking any of the tests, in fact the costs of the scheme ate borne by the BMFA because increasing standardsof flying and safety is a very worthwhile investment. It actually makes flying a lot more fun for the individual as well as those around them.

@@BritishModelFlyingAssociation I have been told that in order to fly a model over 8 ozs you need to pass an exam and join the BMFA, is this true? I used to fly back in the early eighties and was thinking of coming back to it, but having to take exams has put me off. I agree with safety but who in the right mind would spend a small fortune on radio, model, engine etc and just bung it up in the air and hope for the best. Not many. What happened to common sense. I believe we now live in a world where people can not think for themselves and have to be told what to do at every turn. Thank god i`m approaching my 70th year and wont be here to witness what has happened to mankind. I always had insurance which should be mandatory because if you smash your plane into someones car ...... oh dear. Oh and by the way no amount of checks or instruction will help you if the model you are flying wants to have a hiccup, or you get disorientated. Whinge over with.

@@1953PE The CAA introducd operator registration in November 2019, you pay £9 to register as an Operator, there is a very simple test too (calling it an examination is perhaps over exaggerating the difficulty) multiple choice and based on the regulations around flying small unmanned aircraft. At the end of the test if you haven't passed, most do first time as it is very easy and mostly common sense you get told the correct answers to any questions you got wrong. It really is very straight forward and only the smallest hurdle to participation. There is no requirement to join the BMFA, although it is a very sensible thing to do as you then benefit from the best insurance available.

@@BritishModelFlyingAssociation You say that The achievement scheme is entirely voluntary , it cant be if you have to pay £9 and take a simple test. That is not voluntary in my book. So what you are saying is that you can not go to a field anywhere and fly a model aircraft unless you pay £9 and take a exam which is easy to pass (why bother if it is so easy, pointless). Like I say the fun has been taken out of it. Too much bureaucracy. Interesting how the CAA can police every open space in the country. As I said in my first post it is a money making scheme (for the CAA) nothing more nothing less

@@1953PE The £9 and simple online test is absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with the achievement scheme. Regarding the £9 and simple online test, it is very sad if anyone lets something that is relatively inconsequential put them off what is a fun, fascinating, wonderful and engaging sport. It isnt going to put anyone who is serious about model aircraft flying off though.
