Whether you are looking for a BMW 528i, BMW 535i or a BMW 550i you should know which problems to expect on BMW F10 5 series cars. I summarize the biggest problems and issues with each model of the car as well as split the F10 problems based on the years as a lot changed over the years. BMW 5 series went through a facelift or a LCI (Life Cycle Impulse) where it got newer and improved engines, more modern styling and boost in power in most cases. BMW has also solved some of the problems along the way so you can expect the newer cars to be much more reliable than the older cars.

I own the 2014 528i with M Sport kit supercharged twin turbo engine. Bought it brand new and never experienced an issue at all except that you have to change the engine mount after 5 years because you will start to hear some noise when shifting the gear from N to D but changing the engine mount fixed the issue completely. Thanks for the tips, i have a 2013 550i & this is by far the best car i owned very powerful smooth ride with great handling when i first test drove it i fell in love so i purchased it used, i went through hell a few times when i had the coolant leaks & misfires, but overall this 550i is a beast ride, my only concerns is when it hits 100k miles thats when the real maintenance will come, & you mention about the valve stems issue on what mileage do you think that can happen?
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
It's a really nice car, no doubt! The valve stems are kind of mystery as far as I'm concerned. My buddy had his replaced at like 38k miles under warranty when the car started smoking like crazy. Others have put 150k miles on it and no such issues. Dont let her starve of oil and hopefully it won't happen to you.

Thanks for this vid, glad to hear clear and to the point information not cluttered with overly modulated music that you have to adjust your volume 6 times...so annoying...sub’d and liked. I am looking at a 2013 550im with about 122,000 km or 75,000 miles. If I am buying used, with the customer car transfer over to me? What should I be looking for re the oil...how will I know if it’s burning too much? Re the customer care, and if it covers my me...and I bring it in to have it checked...they replace the timing chain for free? I heard the the big issue is the turbo placement and heat...would any of these service visits solve the issue or OS a regular maintenance/prevention thing. Sorry I know it’s a lot of questions but I really like the car...and want that 8cyl bud am scared shitless of a $6,000 bill which here in Canada would probably translate closer to $10K lol
@SimpleCarGuy
@SimpleCarGuy 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and subscribing! I'm not sure if the customer care is still active. I think it was only active for a few years, so you'd have to call your dealer and confirm. Luckily most cars have had it done to the car and should be good or if they haven't and lasted to 75k, they were probably not affected anyway. I would ask the dealer on the specific car as well, they might let you know if it was done or not. If the car is burning a lot of oil, you will see more than usual amount of black soot on the exhaust tips. Of course if you are the owner you will get a message saying oil is low, but harder when you are buying the car as no one will really tell you. Check the records for maintenance and see how well it was taken care of. If not that well, look for a 2014+ car as they have less issues.

Pulley belt failed, drive belt was torn which made the alternator not charge the battery. So far $1644.00 to repair and I’m out of town traveling. Thank goodness the dealership I purchased it from is going to pay by credit card to repair this failure. Glad I found a BMW dealership that gave me a loaner for the night. You are correct, in US the naturally aspirated engine was only available in 2011. It's a very reliable engine with only minor issues like oil leaks if the engine wasn't taken care of, but the problem is that they are getting to be 10 years old. @@SimpleCarGuy if you want to save your brakes, turn the DSC OFF by holding the Dynamic Traction Control button for 5 seconds. Downsides are that you obviously need to then be able to drive the car yourself without electronic assistance (abs still works) and if you turn cruise control on, the DSC goes on again, it also goes on again after every startup. This makes a pretty big difference on how fast your brake pads and discs wear. I don't recommend this to people who don't know how to drive without electronic aids. This applies to both RWD and xDrive models. Another tip i can give is to always turn the start&stop feature OFF when you start the car, it's just completely unnecessary wear on your starter motor, your engine and your turbochargers. Fuel and oil are cheap, turbochargers, engines and starter motors are not.

Great video! IM looking for a F10 520D from around 2010-2012. Are these model years reliable or are they "plagued" with problems? I don't mind paying for regular maintenance but don't want the car to cost me a fortune in repair. Also have heard a few horror stories about timing chain failure that could possibly destroy the engine, is this really a common thing? I don't want to spend 12 000 dollars on a car to just have it completely wrecked.

@@rollydoucet8909 I had many problems with it. The turbo coolant lines melted due to the extreme heat of the V-design of the twin scroll turbos. The fuel pump also simultaneously failed AND cylinder head assembly valves. This was a certified purchase in 2018 with only 26k miles. Certification expired and its almost like the car sensed it. Repairs of $5 to 6k USD. I traded it in before absorbing that cost. I only had to pay the fuel pump for $1700. I will never own another BMW unless its leased or under warranty. I would check with the owner to see if they have had any issues that the CCP fixes. If so, have they fixed them individually with the dealer? I'm honestly not 100% if the dealers are still providing a full package like they did when the cars were under warranty. I think it would be wise to call a dealer and ask as I don't want to give you false information here. Great review, well done! I'm thinking of getting a 2015 535 (60k miles max) but worry about the reliability... Had another BMW for a couple of years and loved it - no doubt I'd love the 535 too but I'm put off by the prospect of having to get something fixed at least 1-2 times every year when things go wrong... And paying at least a few hundred $ per defect (if I'm lucky!) Anyways, keep it up!

That's an excellent choice if you want some performance without too much trouble. The problems I talk about in the video are of course over many different cars, so it's not like everyone will have issues. I think it's best to have a few good code scanners and being able to at least do some of the work yourself. Hope you enjoy whatever car you decide to get.

Issues with mine (f11, 330k km, 2011): headlights module was corroded, water in another headlight, the right back inner backlight led cluster was blinking (needed to be replaced), lock for the boot door stopped working, rear air bumper collapse, semering on cluch was leaking two times. But when you drive it, you excuse it everything
