BUY, LEASE OR FINANCE A BMW 7 SERIES FROM OSV: bit.ly/2HBknjj
We always thought the sixth generation version of BMW's 7 Series large luxury saloon was good; this revised version promises to be better.
When BMW launched the sixth generation version of its top saloon, the 7 Series, it elevated itself back into contention at the top end of the luxury segment for large saloons. But much has happened since. This significantly revised model has had to get clever to keep up with the demands of the marketplace. With a frugal diesel and a plug-in hybrid available, it proves even luxury barges need a conscience these days.

Background
BMW's 7 Series has been with us for well over four decades now, with the first generation car having gone on sale back in 1977. Initially available in one length with a six cylinder engine, a V12 was offered back in 1987 on the second generation car with a long wheel base model available too. As the Nineties became the Naughties, increased environmental concerns saw the introduction of diesels for the UK market as the list of available equipment grew along with the car's size and weight.
For this updated sixth generation car, BMW knew they had to offer even more on-board gadgetry, connectivity and camera-driven safety kit - and of course that's exactly what we've got. Plus the styling's been sharpened and there's a much more competitive petrol Plug-in hybrid option.
Driving Experience
The 7 Series has always sold itself as the driver's choice in luxury limos and that doesn't look to be changing any time soon. Even the most sensible (and slowest) six cylinder 730d pumps out 265hp, enough for 0-62mph in a scant 6.1 seconds (which falls to 5.8s if you go for optional xDrive 4WD). This is a far more popular choice than the similarly-price 340hp 740i petrol model. Other less popular engine options in the 7 Series range all come only with xDrive. There's the 320hp 740d diesel, the 530hp 750i petrol V8 and for real plutocrats, the 585hp M760Li V12.
Should you want to be as green as possible - or just escape the London congestion charge - there's a 745e plug-in hybrid that can travel up to 36 miles on electric power alone. All models receive an eight speed automatic gearbox and air suspension for both front and rear axles that allows you to switch from soft to sporty and the touch of a button. As the ultimate party trick, you can even get out of the car and set it to park itself from your smart phone. Very James Bond. Optional Integral Active Steering allows rear wheel steering to tighten the turning circle and sharpen cornering response. And on most models you can also specify Active Chassis Control to reduce body roll.

No one should ever buy a short wheelbase version of any A8/7/S class. Not sitting at the back is not an excuse either. L versions look so much better. Short version is literally closer to 5 series length than the long wheelbase, so basically when you buy a short 7 you are not buying a real 7.

Unless you are chauffeuring, it’s the dumbest idea ever. Try driving a 7 series or S Class in the city and see how hard it can be. Drive thrus are pretty much a no go and you think having a long wheel base model makes more sense? Good luck pulling out of junctions...you will be giving way to the oncoming vehicles as you pull out due to how wide your turns will need to be to take into account the longer wheelbase. That’s the reality in a city...
@epicon6
@epicon6 3 жыл бұрын
@@Horizon301. LWB versions are generally only 10cm longer than the shorter version but it doesn't look stupidly cut off like the short version. And with LWB versions you will never have to move the seat forwards when really tall people are in the car like you have to with the SWB that is just ridiculous in an s-class. And only the LWB versions have the option to have the console in the middle of the rear seat that makes the interior look 5x more impressive and what really separates it from all regular cars. The SWB rear seat looks and feels like any other rear seat. There are tons of longer vehicles out there like trucks, vans and other much larger vehicles that do just fine in the city. And it's not even close to a limousine length. And there are other luxury brands that have almost a meter more in length. Even the Mercedes-Maybach is on the short side when it comes to it's competitors. The turning radius is about the same in both short and long wheelbase. Difference of few cm, and that is the fun part of owning a large car because it has a larger turning radius than regular small cars. Some drive thru places are a no go i agree but i can drive to another spot that has more space. And some really old parking garages and much less possible spots on the side of the road but both SWB and LWB have the same problem. In traffic i disagree that it makes it harder. Plus if you have a shiny S-Class/7-Series/A8 then 90% of people will take more care to brake early and keep more distance to the car than other cars because they don't want to dent an expensive car. And because it's big it won't go unseen as easily as smaller cars in junctions and in blind spots. Luckily there are smart markets like the US that don't even sell the short wheel base.
@Horizon301.
@Horizon301. 3 жыл бұрын
@@epicon6 you say that yet that is literally the difference between different classes of vehicles and if you have been in the SWB and LWB it is a noticeable size difference, the 7 series is still larger than the 5 series and it’s very clear. I’ve never heard anyone say such a thing about the normal wheelbase vehicles if I’m honest because only taxi drivers get the LWB, not private buyers typically. Where do you live? I think that could be a factor
@epicon6
@epicon6 3 жыл бұрын
@@Horizon301. If i look at used cars about 1/3 is LWB and 2/3 are SWB here in Sweden. Average age of people who buy S/7/A8 new is above 65 years old so most of them aren't aware that the LWB could look better and they just want a 7 series. Yes i agree that 10cm is the difference between many classes. Even the 1994 BMW E38 LWB is still longer at 5124mm than the current 7 Series SWB at 5098mm. That's one of the reasons why i only want LWB because i don't want anyone mistaking my car for an E class or even a C class. LWB with 21" wheels and no one on earth will mistake it for anything else :) I respect your opinion and for me it's a good thing if people like the SWB because then i have more choices of LWB in the used market.
