BMW and MINI 4 cylinder - Common Rough Running Issue for newer engines

2016 BMW X1 has intermittent rough running issue especially on cold start. This issue applies to any BMW and MINI with the 4 cylinder (B46) from 2016 onward.
+ Bonus footage of suspension popping noise and cause.
-This X1 is the same setup as the newer MINI Coopers and Both will have the same symptoms and causes shown here.
- This customer declined the recommended repairs. So unfortunately there is no repairs on this video. The answer is to replace the crankshaft pulley assembly.
-This engine is actually very reliable compared to the last generations. And has gobs of power for being a 4 cylinder!

Maaaaaan thank you very much. I’ve been struggling to figure out why my car is running rough. I’ve changed the coils, injectors, plugs, HPFP, and nothing. I’ve checked the compression and almost everything, only finding in datalogs Rough Cil values wrong, but nothing that help me to find this, I'll look the Damper on my Mini Cooper S F56 B48. Thanks, Mike. Great tips here. Always a good idea to take care of issues. It’s amazing that vehicles are as reliable as they are, being such bloody complex machines! Never mind the computing side of modern cars.

It looks like the same control arm that is on my 2016 F55. Don't ignore those noises. If the ball joint fails it will rip apart the axle and possibly result in complete loss of vehicle control. It can happen with relatively low mileage.

Hello I have a 2016 Mini Cooper s with 82k miles and I sadly have 2 codes and cannot figure it out where to start. Here acre the codes: P13C9 and P054B When I start the car it idles REALLY ROUGH I’ve replaced ignition coils and spark plugs prior to this problem. And from what I understand with rough idle, it could be a VANOS solenoid issue.

It's likely a faulty vanos solenoid. I'd definitely try that first. Otherwise it could be a fulty timing chain module, or timing gear.

How could it be that an almost new car has these issues? This makes me never want to buy a BMW nor a mini again.

I know, It is a 2016, and I can tell the customer neglects it. This a good engine though being a BMW 4 cylinder and all.

Would this balancer make noise putting the car in reverse? After sitting for awhile I heard a noise at start I thought idler pulley might need changing. Now, every few months I get misfire at startup only and message drivetrain error safe to drive that goes away after a minute.

It can cause all kinds of strange issues. Not so much on noises. A worn engine mount can cause rough idle especially in reverse. Hard to say without seeing it. Best of luck.

Would this also throw like a cylinder #2 misfire code? Or cause misfires on only one cylinder?

I know this isn’t a MINI video but I couldn’t find a place where I could message you. But I’m new to the MINI world and I just purchased a 2012 Countryman S All4 with 130k miles. I’m randomly getting a check engine light and the code is “Engine oil pressure control valve, activation: Line disconnection”. Only got it twice within the last 800 or so miles. Car runs fine when it’s active but the message center does say “power is reduced”. Can clear it with scanner and I’m good to go with no issues. Any ideas?

The oil pressure solenoid harness plug leaks oil into the harness insulation causing the fault. You can try cleaning the connector. If it doesn't help the solenoid with harness adapter will need to be replaced.

Would full separation cause a drivetrain malfunction?

Hi. Yes the separation of the crankshaft pulley will cause a drivetrain malfunction light.

@@MikeMDs about 2 months ago I first got the warning got it scanned it said cylinder 1 misfire, got new spark plugs/coils it went away but returned over this weekend, again with cylinder 1 misfire could this be related in anyway? Or any opinion in what it could be? Bad part maybe?

A cylinder 1 misfire is very specific. What engine do you have?

Thanks. It is really hard to know with this engine without seeing it. We rarely have misfire issues that a spark plug or ignition coil wont solve. I'd try and replace them again. Or at least the spark plug. It may be cracked. Also don't use anti-seize paste on the spark plug threads. It can cause a misfire.
