My starter practically fell out of my e23 last week, the bolts seemingly backed themselves out. Honestly it wasn't that horrible to reinstall the bolts. Didn't have to remove a single hose, radiator overflow, nothing at all. My e30 starter I did last month during a clutch job was far worse. It used nuts instead of bolts so you actually have to hold both ends of a fastener instead of just turning a bolt head, genius design xD For anyone replacing the (e23) starter with the engine in the car, for the bolt closer to the engine, put the socket by itself on the bolt head, and then feed a combination of extensions to connect to the socket. Then attach your socket wrench. For the bolt closer to the drivers fender, (the more accessible and visible bolt) I managed to fit a long 17mm wrench on the bolt head and tighten it up, after hand threading the bolt until it was completely snug.
