I replaced and install a new water pump on my BMW E65 E66 in this video because my water pump bearing was causing a lot of noise and the bearing was loose and giving out on me.
My car in the video is a 2006 BMW E65 with the 4.8L V8 N62 MOTOR, also found in the X5 and range rover.
Thanks for watching

Thanks Dude ! You saved me $500 ! Dont forget to put the gasket on before you put the water pump on like I did. I had the pleasure of replacing a water pump twice. Also I did not have to remove the Big Main Pulley at the Bottom, I used a 10mm wrench and created magic. FYI: flip the wrench around after every turn

You do t have to remove the crankshaft pulley. There's a notch in the pulley for that bolt. Use a 10mm wrench to loosen the bolt and the pump with the bolt will be removed together. I do recommend to buy a shorter bolt when re-installing. (1-2mm shorter)

I just replaced my water pump using your tutorial as my guide. Thanks man!! FYI: My crank pulley torx bolts were T45 and the large crank bolt is 27mm. Also the torque specs for the crank pulley bolts is 22nm and the for the water pump pulley bolts is 12nm.

You do not need to remove the 8 bolts holding the crank pulley, neither the AC belt does not need to be removed either all you have to do is remove the fan and insert an impact 27 mm remove the crank pulley bolts and and pry the crank pulley with a pry bar just enough to give clearance to the last 10 mm water pump Bolt that will save you about 30 minutes of Labor

There’s a notch in the pulley, no need to remove the crank pulley. Rotate the engine using the crank bolt until the notch is lined up with the bolts.

Thanks a lot for your outstanding work. Your videos really enable all DIYers in the auto sector to get things done and safe hundreds of bucks... I just wanted add one detail about the reinstallation of the A/C belt. If you put the belt over the big center pulley and the A/C pulley and then put the big center back into place will automatically tension the belt. All you need to do is put one center pulley screw that goes on the left side first. Tighten the screw with your fingers as much as you can. Then out one more screw on the opposite side . Push the pulley fully to its seating plate and tighten that second screw again as much as possible by hand. Then put the remaining 6 screws in and tighten them all with the wrench. Done.

I always come back to your vids when something is wrong on my car or for DIY help. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!! You most certainly saved me hours and hours of trying to figure out the oddities of BMW's. I mean, I can change the water pump in my Ford truck in about a half hour...BMW, not so much. And, of course, probably $1000 that I didn't have to pay the dealer. 2005 BMW 745i 160,000 miles. Got the water pump online for around 80 bucks, thermostat $41 and water pipe $16.

Thanks great info. You can actually remove the water pump without removing the drive pulley, the bottom screw can be loosened and backed right off then tilt the pump backwards and jiggle it about a bit.

Correct. On mine there were a couple of holes drilled into the back of the drive pully which when aligned with the bottom water pump bolt allowed it to come out easily.

My 08 E66, the tensioner is a T60. Also, no need to remove the crank pulley. Just use an open end 10mm wrench and loosen the lower bolt until it’s free. You can leave it in the water pump flange as you pull the pump away.

Steve- I haven't found any comments on it so I thought I'd let you know about that one difficult bolt. The main pulley has a notch in it and I turned the crank to line it up with the bolt. What I did was loosen the bolt w a ratchet box wrench and it came easily with fingers. I lifted the top end of the pump out to free the rear facing outlets and worked the pump up and out with the bolt in place.(slid up pretty easily) Replacing new was in reverse order and this is where notch came in handy. I slid screwdriver in to keep pressure on head while I got bolt started. Getting it back in was a bit tedious using open end wrench side to side to tighten but I think it was still easier than trying to get that ac belt back on would have been. Hope this tidbit helps you and others. Your video is why I was able to do the job in the first place. Thank you for taking the time to help all of us. Tony.
@outkastdog43
@outkastdog43 9 жыл бұрын
Tony Orozco Thanks Tony for that find ..so what you are saying is that you take a screw driver and put it through the notch putting pressure on the head of the bolt and finger tighten first behind the big pulley to get the bolt started..I do not want to mess with the AC belt for sure
@fonissan
@fonissan 9 жыл бұрын
outkastdog43 Yes, one hand holding and twisting the other holding I believe a phillips just till it got started. Once it was all the way in I was able to fit a ratcheting boxed in wrench to tighten up. Also fyi, a friend of mine told me to put grease on back side of gasket so that it stays in place while trying to install the water pump. Hope it goes well
@martingomez4357
@martingomez4357 7 жыл бұрын
Tony Orozco the notch seems too small for the bolt to come thru; how did you do it? Update: was able to pull out the pump with bolt still in, as you mentioned(just wiggling it). One of the things I did when putting the new pump in, I trimmed off that bolt just enough to be able to fit between the back of the pulley and the engine. I just don't understand how BMW never made the notch bigger or that bolt shorter; go figure. At any rate thanks DIYsavecash.

I used your video as a reference and really helped. Mine is an 03 so a little different. The water tube for the Alternator did not seat properly so had to take the entire thing apart again to fix it. Funny thing is it took me about 3 hours the first time and only about an hour the 2nd time. I love the way most of the bolts come out with fingers after a half turn. These cars are very well engineered. Having a tensioner for the A/C belt is a life saver. WHY DID THEY TAKE IT OFF LATER MODELS???? To save money on a 100k car? This is not a car to own if you don't know how or want to work on them. Local indy wanted $1,200 to do what it cost me to do with less than $200 in parts. Not OEM but I can change it myself many times and still come out ahead.

A few add on's to your great video. I have a 2003 so I've got a tensioner on the A/C belt so easy to R and R. My tensioner for main belt is a T60. The T55 stripped out and thought I'd have to get a new one. Be careful not to lose the o rings in the hoses or you'll have huge leaks. Don't over tighten the water pump bolts or you'll snap off the head... ask me how I know...

DO NOT LOOSEN YOUR A/C COMPRESSOR TO PUT ON BELT! I can tell you with experience with motor out of car its almost impossible to align it back up with motor sitting on the floor out of car! use a long screw driver or pry bar to wedge it on as you rotate the crank pulley. those belts are made to stretch for this design. Also, as a note, these thermostats are made to stick open when failed for safety purposes. that said, an easy way to know if your Thermostat is bad is your car (not e65/e66 cuz on no temp gauge) will not register temp over base 160 degrees on dial and you will most likely get weird errors/fault codes like map sensor failure, emissions failure, cat converter not converting, misfires in multiple cylinders etc.

Have a question, when you pulled off the water pump you pulled out a tube maybe 3" long top left side of the intake manifold, it looked like yours was white and had two rubber seals on it. I heard that seal is a big problem leaking. Did you replace yours because that pipe that runs across the entire intake about a foot and half long is known to leak at the seal and you basically have to disassemble the block to get to it to replace a seal. I was wondering if you replaced yours with that bimmer fix product I've been seeing lately. Sorry I forget what exactly what it was called. But they say you just have to remove the water pump and put their sleeve into that hole to fix that seal leak.

I enjoyed this very well done video. It would be harder to do on my v12. That A/C belt looks like a real struggle. Manufactures no longer try to keep things simple to do. What do you think of those clip type rad hoses? I like clean off and blow into the coolant tank (pinch off any overflow pipe) with my mouth to do a basic pressure test before wasting coolant.

Great call on not wasting fluid, I personally like the clips on the hoses, but the flat head screw driver one's on my old Cadillac weren't that bad either. Yes your right they do make it pretty hard on us to work on these cars sometimes.

Hey Chris, I watched your video very thoroughly. I went step by step. My thermostat housing is leaking a lot coolant from the back bolt. I've used sealant for the thermostat housing. Was I or can I use sealant on the water pump ,where the two pipes are to install it?
@DIYsavecash
@DIYsavecash 7 жыл бұрын
Hello, to be honest I'm not 100% sure you can, so I would call or research more before you did that. Try to look up BMW E65 E66 coolant leaking from back water pump bolt and read everything you can in the BMW forum boards. My guess is maybe that small pipe is not tightly fitted into the slot or the o-rings have given out or maybe there's some old gasket stuck creating a little gap that the coolant is spraying from? or maybe the bolt is not seated properly causing the bolt not to tighten down as much as it should?

I took it apart today to get a closer look and found its that small pipe behind the water pump (25:45) easy fix and not expensive. Question is should I go ahead and replace thermostat and pump since I'm already in here or leave it alone? "If it ain't broken don't fix it " type of situation lol

Big Short cut! You only have to loosen those eight T40 bolts on the crank pulley and not remove the AC belt. I loosen mine by eight 1/2 turns each, not taking them out, allowing the crank pulley to "cock" to one side. Gave me about 1/2" extra room to easily take out that lower water pump bolt. You just need make sure you push the crank pulley back on straight as you tighten the T40 bolts.

HEPU seems to be the go to right behind the genuine brand however my mechanic said it doesnt matter which one as long as the inner wheel (forgot the actual term) is metal and not plastic. Any recommendation and is HEPU the original supplier to bmw? Do you recommend changing thermo as well at the same time?

The crank pulley hub has a short (3 mm) pin that must be in its hole between two of the crank pulley bolts. The pin is short so it is not above the surface so the washer ring lays flat. the pulley can be installed without this pin in its hole very easily. This results in the pulley having a bit of runout and the bolts may come loose later. It is also a good idea to use either new pure coolant or a silicone paste for cooling system parts to lubricate the o rings for the pipes. This makes pushing the pump over the pipes easier and can prevent the o rings from slipping out.

I replaced my water pump but it's leaking from the bolt behind the big pulley. What's the cause from that?

Just did this with a Hapu pump. Now my idle is...sort of off, and occasionally gets rough and shaky. Feels like it has more of a "growl". The under-door entry light clearly dim in & out a bit when the door is open. Drives fine though & no error lights. Still idles @ 500~ with AC off.

jooper99 Meh. It leveled out. Maybe just left over grease on the pulleys.

thanks for the great videos to help out people. I have a 745i with a slow coolant leak which requires filling every 7 to 8 days. I watched your video on the o ring of the sensor, but I think my leak is coming from the coolant transfer pipe. have you come across this problem? seemingly it is a common issue and have you work on the Collapsible Coolant Water Transfer Pipe Kit or bimmerfix pipe. can you suggest anything . thanks so much.

+spring 12 Hello, yes that is a known problem, do you have the 2002-2005 model? They fixed this issue with the 2006-2008's. I haven't fixed that myself but if you Google BMW E65 E66 water transfer pipe fix read everything you can on the BMW forum boards, that's where I go when I don't know. Keep me updated on the fix.

I have this irritating whistling noise and I think it may also be the water pimp I'm not sure but it seems to be from that area. I have a 06 650i when I press the gas the whistle noise gets louder it's so embarrassing. Was yours the same way?

Hello, Could be the water pump bearing just like my nasty sound I had, or could be one of your tensioner or pully's. What I like to do is if it needs to be fixed and you have the extra cash just start at the tensionser belts and pully's and then go for the water pump. Check out my videos on the tensioners and pully's they'll help out. I have videos were I record all my sounds just start watching you'll find the fix.:)

BarberQuestStudent It should be called The "Heater return pipe" that's what it's listed as on ebay for parts.

DIYsavecash thanks again soooo much, changed water pump, thermostat and that heater return tube. Just a size note, some engines have a water cooler alternator, like mine did. There's another thin black tube that goes from the water pump down to the alternator, replace that while you're at it... And make sure you don't over tighten the screw's to the water pump... You can easily do that... Thank again... I love the detail in your videos. Gonna change my gubio joint next... Mine does the same thing

Common issue is the coolant transfer pipe. A few after market solutions are available - a search for N62 coolant transfer pipe will bring up some good videos on the fix.

You want to check for a damaged o-ring on the coolant pipe after you remove the water pump. If you are still running the original one.
