Hello Everyone,
In this video I'm replacing the DPF again in my 2010 BMW E91 318d.
It is a cheap DPF for around £230. I know that seems like a bad idea. And it is. But I tried not to spend more money than I had to and phoned the shop that sells theese. They assured me they sell a lot of these and never had any issues or complaints. They were just lying to my face probably, but that's life. You live and learn.
Anyway, hope this video was helpful for you!
Thanks for watching and see you next time!

Fantastic editing! I like how you decided to narrate over only the necessary video clips. Great video. The "There probably is a torque setting...let's be sensible" comment is very funny. I hope EuroFlo uses this video for QC training.

Hi, thanks for the video. it helped a lot to do my recent DIY dpf cleaning. However, can you plz make step by step video of installing dpf back in if you get a chance or just share any tips & tricks on which bolt to get in first so that the reset of the ones align properly etc. since you have done this few times :)? I had to struggle big time getting in every single bolt. The top torx bolt out of the 2 that holds the bracket at the bottom, I couldn't even reach it properly to get it in and, on top of that, the bracket wasn't aligning to the screw hole even though I loosened the bracket for some play. So I'm planning to take it to the mechanic later. I guided dpf back in to its place and it went through quite easily and connected it to the muffler and I went 'Yes' but then the nightmare started. Nothing else I could align after that. The metal washer between the turbo and the dpf wasn't sitting in its place and holding it in place myself while trying to align dpf & turbo connection was just impossible. So, I had to align them first and then pull out the dpf just enough to drop in the washer and pray god that it goes in and sits in its place nicely. The hex bolt that you loosened using multiple extension from underneath, I had to do it from the top as I didn't have enough extensions and also I had to use a big ratchet to break it loose as it was bit tight. I had to get my son's help to get this back on - I held the dpf from underneath the car to align the brackets and my son was just able to reach it from the top to put the bolt and the nut through the brackets. This whole ordeal lasted for over 5 hours and it's not over yet as I have to still take my car to the mechanic to get that torx bolt done :(

Hi Jay. Thank you for your comment. Yes, they can be annoying to put back. Specially if you get a cheap aftermarket like I did and nothing lines up. But unfortunately I can't do any more videos on that car as I don't own it anymore and I'm trying to keep the content more motorcycle related. The next car I bought after that was a 530d and that was a lot more difficult to get in and out, so it could be worse :)

Could you tell what bolt sizes are used on the dpf ? Planning to do this on my e92 320d 2009. The one bolt you loosened from under the car with the long extender, bit stressing on that one haha. Want to make sure I have the right tools, nothing worse than having to put everything back together just to do it all again for 1 bolt lol.

Hey there. I’m sorry, I can’t remember the size, but it’s a socket you’ll probably find in most sets. It might have been a 12 or 13mm 🙂

Hello, thank you for making this video. I have the same car and engine. There is an annoying noise comming from under the exhause when you accelerate and the engine is warmed up. It could be the dpf heat shield like yours, I will have to check. Why did you not consider getting the protective shield rewelded, rather than replacing the whole dpf? Thanks again

Hey there. Thank you for your comment! I’m glad the video was helpful 🙂 I did consider welding it myself and fixing the flawed design of the heat shield, but that would void the warranty. So I just swapped it instead.

Hey there. Sorry for the late reply. It’s a pretty low torque, 2 stage setting. I don’t remember exactly, but I think it’s 1. 6Nm to make sure it seats properly, 2. Loosen the bolt a bot 3. 3Nm I didn’t really bother and just did tat one by feel 🙂

Hey there. I can’t really answer that. You’ll have to try and figure out weather your dpf is the issue or there’s something else going on. Generally it’s not a good idea to mess with your dpf. It’s a little bit illegal in most places and you’ll have to remap the car 🙂

Hi, I have a 2012 X1 18Xdrive (E84) - The DPF keeps getting blocked every 200 miles or so even with motorway driving. Do you have any idea what could be causing it? It gets so blocked to the point the car won't start. Thanks in advanced!
@garage_tales
@garage_tales 2 жыл бұрын
Hi ben. I’m not that knowledgeable with dpf’s. I’d rather work on bikes.But it seems like it’s clogged to the point where it can’t regen and clear itself. It’s not healthy for the car as the back pressure gets too high and can damage the turbo and other bits. To my knowledge, your options are: 1. Pay those mobile mobile companies to come and clean it on your drive (from friends feedback, that’s only a temporary fix and the problem will return soon) 2. Remove it and take it to one of those companies that bake it in the oven for 8 hours or so and clean it. That seems to be the best way to clean it. They usually do HGV dpf’s. 3. Take it off and clean it yourself with a pressure washer and some dpf cleaner. That’s the cheapest, but does involve you doing some work. I’ve done it on my e61 and now, roughly 6k miles later it still behaves perfectly and back pressure bellow 10 mbar at idle. Hope that helps :)
@iambenmitchell
@iambenmitchell 2 жыл бұрын
@@garage_tales thanks for the reply :) I had it cleaned by a company about a month ago (200 miles ago or so) and it’s blocked again. I’m thinking there might be a oil leak in the turbo or something. Having it cleaned again and hoping this time it doesn’t clog up.

@@iambenmitchell Have you checked fault codes? check that your engine temperature rises at the right level when you are driving (i think that it should be around 90 degrees celsius or 194 fahrenheit. If its not then its the thermostat and try to change that. Here in Finland, we use these 88-90 degree celsius thermostat in our cars. Not sure what’s the recommendation in your country But yeah, hope that this helps if you are still dealing with dpf problem.

The issue is happening because your DPF regen is not working - why that is not working probably and most liked due to the Glow plug Relay control module that control the glow plugs and when they are not working you get symptoms that i will explain but most notably the regen will not work - you need to change the EGR and throttle body or clean them and next the inlet manifold, followed by changing or testing the lambda/ Oxygen sensor - can you be more specific on the symptoms do you smell burning smell of diesel in the driving seat is the needle on RPM gauge moving up and down - plug a scanner into your car and get a read out of the codes - Brilliant video by the way and thanks for sharing. 💯

@@iambenmitchell Hi Ben, I would first check whats causing the blockage rather than just cleaning dpf coz from the quotes I got from couple cleaners here in Sydney it's not cheap. I had the same issue, actually I'm still going through it coz it's still bit too early to tell if I'm out of it coz I DIY cleaned by dpf just last night :). If you have the scan tool then check for errors that stops dpf from regenerating. In my case it was error code 4862. I have the paid version of bimmer-tool so I was manually deleting it so that the car could do the passive regen. It even has force-regen option which I had to do quite frequently. But the main thing here is to get rid of 4862 error code. For me it was caused by clogged EGR pipe that connects to inlet manifold. EGR gases were barely passing through it. But I figured it out bit late coz my ash level when I started using this scan tool was around 39 grams if I remember correctly and it was 60.9 grams when I cleaned my dpf (not sure if there's sth else in play here for getting ash lvl up that high within 5-6 months). I mean it still shows the same ash level after the cleaning but my back-pressure was showing 60 hpa when I started my car after the dpf clean and after around 10 minutes it went down to -6 hpa. Usually it used to be the other way around - back pressure would go up. So, it might just need dpf adaptation? But again it's bit too early to come to any conclusion as I haven't even driven the car yet. But that's all I know from my experience if it helps. I'm driving e84 X1 sdrive 18d 2014 model and it's done 170K kms

@@TheLoneRanger1992 Removing the DPF & EGR will make it more reliable and keep the intake clean. It will probably also improve fuel economy and give you more power. This version may be for n47c engines and maybe n47d. I have no dpf problem my cars at 148k, I drive on motorway everyday doing 70mph. But my egr is showing problems I've also fitted a brand new intake manifold. I've cleaned it seems to work fine now. No more engine light. However should I consider removing my dpf and cleaning it. Regen is working always have been monitoring it on the scan tools.
