Available from Sunday the 21st of January, 2024 on Shooting Brake, the auction platform for car enthusiasts.
BMW had a hard act to follow after the E46 M3. Met with rave reviews, record-setting sales figures and a universal outpouring of love for the brawny, wide-arched straight-six Coupe, BMW's M-division had the unenviable job of delivering a true successor.
The E92 M3 was the answer. A bespoke, all aluminium 4.0 litre V8 provided 420bhp and an absolutely hair-raising 8,500RPM red-line, the highest ever seen in a road-going M-car. The chassis gained an all-new suspension setup compared to previous 3-series generations, with a twin-arm front setup for better bump steer and caster profiles, whilst a revised multi-link rear axle ensured that power deployed correctly.
BMW soon followed up with the E90 M3, the E92's saloon variant. Reportedly stiffer and better balanced, if slightly heavier, the E90 M3 was always rumoured to be the sweetest steer of them all. Ghaleb's here to find out if that really is the case.
This E90 M3 is an LCI example fitted with the 6-speed manual gearbox. It's 1 of 12 cars in this combination of facelift manual saloon and represents the last naturally aspirated M3 generation. It's had all the big preventative jobs ticked off, including throttle actuators, rod bearings, clutch and waterpump. It also features fully adjustable coilovers, AP racing brakes and a "1.5 pipe" exhaust modification, allowing the V8 to sing without droning on regular usage.

This M3 isn't just the sounds but the performance in general, dynamically, exceptional balanced, obviously the S65 engine was named the best engine in 2008,09,10 and 2011, what else you want to say to recognize this is one of the best MBW M3 car ever produced.

the BMW engineers got so successful with this M3 because they build the car around the engine type, plus the fact best steering hydraulic assistance and DCT gearbox and when you go to the race track is when you really appreciate what this car can deliver and I'm talking about the E90 too.

This has been my ultimate configuration for the E9x platform, the rear arches of the Saloon, the 6 speed manual heel n toe rowing through the gears of the S65 what a dream definitely need to try one one day!

Such an epic car this. Completely belies its on paper statistics and in my opinion is fairly misunderstood. BMW M took such a focused approach during this era, with the E60 and E90 taking on the most hardcore, sporting and focused handling profile that BMW ever did IMO. Whoever wins this auction will be a very, very lucky person.

I have an LCI E90 M3, albeit DCT. It is a fantastic car. I have driven a couple of manual cars (including one my dad had from new back in 2009 - a coupe) and I think the DCT box suits the engine better, and having the shorter ratios means you can enjoy the engine even more! It's a peach.

I think both gearboxes have their own charms. DCT gets the best performance out of the S65, but being able to engage fully with the engine via a clutch and gearlever is so fun and it still provides ample performance. Ultimately comes down to preference IMO

Just bought my 2010 LCI white Fox red interior e90 M3 DCT in December Currently repairing it ( was involved in a minor surface deep accident ). It’s a dream I can’t wait Watching this just made me more excited

In 10 years, this car will be a collectors gem for a well cared for example. When Gintani does the Paul Walker build series, this car will be sought after by every 20 year old in the states.

I have a 2010 LCI E90 with DCT. I've done a back box exhaust mod and M3 GTS gearbox tune which has opened up the exhaust note and sharpened the shifts. It actually does make you smile every time you drive. I've actually owned a 2017 M2 and the turbo M cars just don't cut it ! The only additional mods I'm thinking of is an eventuri intake and AP brake upgrade and that's about it. Bottom line is driving experience>speed or any performance stats on paper

The E90 looks so much cooler than the E92; the rear arches on the saloon look much better than those of the coupe. I’m happy to forego the carbon roof. I’m desperate to swap my E92 335i for an E9x M3. Initially I was convinced that the DCT was the way to go based on driving a family member’s car, but I think manual gearboxes are a huge draw for me (I prefer my wife’s 330i to my car and I’m convinced it’s the manual gearbox). One of my biggest regrets is not buying said family member’s E90 M3 when he sold it; I bought an M140i instead which was a huge disappointment in the end. The body is generally good on these, but the rear subframes are becoming in issue; they love to rot.

The E90 has the stubby, almost Kamm tail that we grew to love of previous M cars. E92 definitely has its own appeal though, perhaps a bit more spec sensitive than other generations of M3. The DCT is fantastic but the manual definitely has its own draw!

Good video 😎, a small correction, a manual M3 e90 weighs 1605 kgs. I'm really surprised to hear what you said about the M3's steering, I think you're only the 2nd reviewer to say that (and I've watched dozens of M3 reviews now, despite owning one myself, lol). Steering feels great to me and not too quick. Saloon stiffer than a coupe?? I don't think so, remember you've got extra holes in the chassis for extra doors 😉, what makes you say a saloon's stiffer?

The E90 is faster round the track than the E92 because its chassis is stiffer. Pillarless doors in the coupe reduce its structural rigidity.

@@addj7093 structural rigidity is mostly down to the body shell, not the doors. The saloon has 2 extra 'holes' for the rear doors, so is less stiff, also the saloon doesn't have the carbon fibre roof (bar the CRT), so is heavier. So no way can the saloon be quicker around the track (everything else being equal of course).

@@Assimilator1 found the reason here it is “The sedan has a stiffer chasis due to the b-pillar than the coupe and is shorter than the coupe making it easier to overcome inertia.”

@@addj7093 grammar has got messed up in that, but technically it doesn't make sense either, the coupe still has a B pillar, and IIRC the saloon is only about an inch shorter....

It's due to BMW's useage of LEDs for the angel eyes on the LCI model, combined with the framerate of our camera. In real life they are seamlessly on, however the 'refresh rate' of the angel eyes doesnt quite match the frame rate of the video hence them appearing to strobe

​@@shootingbrake I have a friend who is now selling an E39 M5. He wants to exchange it for a newer M model. He found E90 M3 pre lci from 2008. with manual transmission. He gave up the E60 M5 because it is unreliable. Do you think the E90 M3 with a manual transmission would be a good replacement for the E39 M5?

@@mislavkonjik2827 Personally yes I think so. The E90 M3 interior isn't as nice as the E39 but they are more fun to drive and more modern, both in terms of reliability and useability. I think a manual E90 M3 like this one is the best replacement for an E39 M5.

@@mislavkonjik2827 Tough question! It's a genuinely brilliant car. Characterful, fast, engaging, comfortable, handome, sounds great... at the same time, one could argue the E39 M5 and E46 M3 are so loved that no car could ever live up to their hype. I think they are a brilliant car and one of the best supersaloons ever made. They have to be seen through the lense of a 20 year old, 1.8 ton car however.
