One thing to consider if you spend a lot of money on a high mileage car is to get ‘agreed value insurance’ so if the car is written off you won’t be left out of pocket. A standard insurance policy will just offer you the market rate for a high mileage example

A very informative series and balanced view. I have had my E92 M3 for 7 years and 40'000 miles, and still love driving daily. Its Xmas present (Eventuri Plenum) made all the difference to the driving experience. I foresee the Stage II upgrade next.

Great IDEA, great PREMISE tested !!! This is exactly what every single buyer ponders about. I love the point at the end, if you are buying for investment and don't care about your personal enjoyment buy the lower mileage (you shouldn't be buying cars for investments to begin with, there are better investment commodities) but if you are buying for your personal enjoyment, by all means, spend the same (buy the higher mileage and replace key components) and enjoy a car that feels pretty close when it was brand new and cost a million dollars/pounds! lol :D

It is often the better approach to put the money into a lower mileage, better example - but there is a certain satisfaction that comes with knowing you did the restoration/upgrades.

I’ve done exactly what you have done with the high mileage car, I bought a e90 m3 with 100k needed lots of work, I’ve also replaced every bush after watching your video, I would say I’ve spent around 8k aswel I only paid 13k for my car on a 08 plate. The car feels brand new I love it, I have never drove a low mileage m3 so nothing to compare to so watching this justify’ me spending the money 😊

Other things to also consider on a higher mileage car is the paint/body work condition and interior condition. Although interior/exterior condition isn’t a sliding scale, higher mileage/older cars are more likely to be in a worse condition

The way you have to look at is depends on how its been looked after if its had the rod bearings etc done, you can spend 24k on one then still have to sort the common issues Where the higher mileage would already have them done

I have an e92 335i with 155k+ in the clock and watching this really makes me want to do this refurb job on it. The e92s are still some of the beat looking 3 series BMs IMO.

Brilliant car. E93. I had it just over 7 years. General maintenance but throttle actuators were replaced after 5 years. Apart from that was a very reliable car. Had the e46 M3 before that, and a few issues with the SMG gearbox and Vanos. Upgraded to a M6 f12 2016. Hopefully will be reliable. Power compared to the e93, e46, e36, is a lot more. Spins in most gears.

Any resonance issues with decat and after market exhaust? Almost like a slight stutter at lower RPM. Interested to hear your thoughts

I bought a 2007 e92 m3 with 95k miles back in October for £14.5k. It’s got a full main dealer/specialist service history and throttle accs/rod bearings done at 87k miles. Interior is cleaner than most 66 plate cars. It needed an idler pulley when I bought it so was making a whine when warmed up. I’ve replaced all pulleys and belts as preventative maintenance. There’s diamonds in the rough.

I’ve learnt that one the hard way. Always spend as much as possible on any kind of car which you’re buying as an investment. Original paint is a big factor in terms of value in older cars. No respray will ever be recouped or fetch the same as a mint factory paint equivalent. It all comes down to finances and how you plan on using the car. If you’re buying it to drive and enjoy then a high mileage car isn’t such a negative factor. It’s probably the better option with the additional refurbishment money to make it drive sweet again. But potentially more of a headache than just buying a clean low mileage car.

I hope you turn the Monte Carlo into a Team Schirmer style track car. I think that would be a very interesting series. Just a thought 😜

One thing you have to consider in this situation is engine longevity. At some point the engine on the higher mileage car is going to need a full rebuild or at least a partial one, where as the lower mileage one is going to last twice as long before such rebuild is necessary.

That was an excellent project. Seeing the prices go up… lots put up for sale, to meet the demand (assume a lot of people will try to jump back in, when the prices are suitably low) and now falling has been interesting. Also, variances on pricing, over the years. I bought my ‘12 e92 nearly 6yrs ago, for £26K, with 34K miles. I’ve easily pumped £10K into it, between maint and mods (BBK, KW v3 coilovers, Bush refresh and rear subframe rebuild, S/S cat-back, RBs, TAs, Pre-cat delete/Stage 2/DCT flash, CF intake system (Eventuri/AFe/Carbon Factory) K-bar (highly recommend, if you have flip down rear seats) and Mumbray under-tray) Now has 87K miles… sounds the nuts… handles fantastically (to me) and I’ve no plan to sell, anytime soon. I just accept that I’ll never recover that extra money, and enjoy the ride. 😊 Well… until the next ‘wallet-draining’ expense pops up 🙄😂

Bought my e92 with 75,000 miles in 2018. Since then I’ve driven it across the country, driven it up the west coast, taken it out to the Mojave Desert a scary distance from a gas station and made some unbelievable memories. At 100k miles now, it’s ready for some paintwork here and there and the suspension is ready to be freshened up (RBs done, TAs still OG). The important thing I came here to convey is… if I’d bought a 25k mile M3, I’d have been reluctant to do what brings me the most enjoyment… and that’s drive it. This is going to be a forever car (it’s not my primary, it’s paid for, etc)… so I don’t really care about resale. It was more important that I could enjoy it without worrying about killing the value with miles or having that garage queen where the low miles are the wow factor as opposed to the adventures I’ve had with it. The car is in great shape and with about $5k-$7k invested it’ll be as pristine as a 10k mile example again, but one that I’m not hesitant to enjoy outside of my garage.

Another thing to consider, beyond investment is if you're buying to drive it often, clocking up even more miles, might as well go high mileage and then refresh? And then continue to refresh over time?

Only issue when comparing to the 70k mile blue M3 is you still don't know if any thing needs to be replaced, thus yes it might cost 24k but might need money spent to make it right.

Not sure comparing modded to stock makes sense, some of the attributes you put on milesge could really be stiffer bits…

A question for you guys: Would the DCT gearbox from this car fit into my V10 late 07 plate M5 , I know the manual gearboxes have been done ( I had a quote for around 6k ) but I don’t think I’ve read about anyone fitting the DCT ? It would be interesting to watch and find out.

I did the same with my e92 330d… shocks,springs,all the suspension arms,bushes etc,had the engine walnut shell blasted & a host of other preventative maintanance.It was like night & day.I had bought all the parts & was gonna get a indi to do the work but then lockdown came up & I decided to try it myself.it was a steep learning curve … had axle grinders & got more tools now then a fcuking garage 😂.Was worth all the hassle & now I’ll try anything.Next up is the cooling system refresh.The sound coming out of the red un is like porn😂

The answer is buy one with double the mileage for half the price that someone else recently did ask is the necessary maintenance on and won’t see any of that money back.

I bought a not so cheap, with a bit of high mile E90 M3. Had about 81k miles when I bought it for about $29k US. I've put about $10k in maintenance (con rod bearings, motor mounts, spark plugs, bmw brakes all the way around, front lower control arms and torsion rods, fuel tank breather valve, valve cover gasket, one bank throttle actuator). Car is still completely stock outside of a K&N drop in filter. So for essentially 40k, was it worth it? I am not entirely sure. My issue is, what else could I have bought for 40k. F10 M5 maybe, but then what maintenance would it have needed from there. So, yes I am happy with the car, V8 sounds amazing. Right now its a keeper.

Weirdly looked less bouncy in the blue car but perhaps the speed was greater in the red one doe to the suspension upgrade.

I have a higher mileage (70k) jaguar xfr. Had for almost 10 years and its still an absolute beast. Had it tuned/cammed/full exhaust, i dont race it but i do get M3s that prod n nudge for a race. Older sports cars if you do your homework can be great

Nice video l would probably go for the lower mileage car keep on saving as it seems like it would be less headache also if you by a cheeper car you then have to invest in a good mechanic if you don’t that £8000 could be £16000 and the car may still not right if it’s low mileage as the car gets more mileage it’s your mileage so you know how the car has been looked after and driven that’s important especially for a bmw m3. I bought a high mileage e93 m3. It had about 206,000 miles. Did exactly what you did and replaced a bunch of parts, probably around 8000 canadian dollars in parts. Currently has 212,000 miles and drives brand new. The only thing I didn't change were the rod bearings. They are original.

These cars really are superb. I'm surprised that prices haven't blown up even more, but it's only a matter of time. They're just in a different league to the soulless roadgoing gadgets being churned out by most manufacturers today.

Upsides and downsides of course, upsides the low mileage has obviously had less time on the road, but that doesn't tell you about how it's been driven, the high mileage one, well you'll be going through it anyway to get it all back to spec, at which point you will see exactly what condition the vehicles in, i would say it's actually not worth the higher price at that point, get it as cheap as possible with the exception of having a fully working motor, and refurbish it, much more sense.

I bought my Monte Carlo edition 6 years ago its on around 80k miles now, I absolutely love it! I've done mods from supercharging, to a digital cluster, to M4 competition seats, the list goes on! Lol! I could never sell it now I don't think!

Just bought a clean title space grey e92 m3 DCT Clean CA TITLE 99k miles , over black novillo leather interior with quad tip muffler delete. Paid 17.4k Sounds absolutely bonkers and pulls like no one’s business. A little less torque coming from an n54 but nevertheless feels so solid 😮 great video m8.

Small detail. The BMW E9X M3 OE suspension parts are made by TRW and are much cheaper than the same BMW OEM suspension components. The subframe work was overkill, and would be super-expensive.

I will go ahead with the blue one!! Mileage does not mean to much you still should things on the vehicle!!

8 grand in maintenance, damn that is a lot. Proves it is worthwhile buying something that has been well looked after regardless of mileage.

Flipping the car vs keeping it? The lower milage (red) car, cost more and you'll still need to do the suspension refresh. Instead of being similar in cost after you did the work on the blue one, the red will be in the mid to upper 30's when you're done. If I was the owner of the blue one, I'd know that I was done spending money on the major items and I could just enjoy. If I bought the red one, even with lower mileage, I would KNOW that I had more work to do.

Nah! I don't know how to replace the rod bearings, and the car is to heavy to lift up. Those test pipes won't pass smog testing even with a tune anymore.

I was buying a 145k mile e63 M6 last year for 12k euros and a Tag Heuer watch lol I backed out cause I didn't trust it to make it over to you guys to the rod bearings and other things so went for 440i instead😂😂

An interesting experiment, I predicted this outcome. I think changing suspension parts on any car over 10 years old and 50,000 miles will make a big difference to how it drives, well worth doing on a performance car but maybe not bother on something like a Toyota Corolla 😂
