BMW E92 335i N54 Lost Power And Wouldn't Run: LPFP Problem

The 335i finally broke down on the highway, whilst on the way to shoot a wicked Gintani tuned e92 M3. The 335i lost power at 100kmh and started to judder, it wouldn't maintain speed and i had to stop. It felt like a miss-fire, but there were no warning lights on the dash. This is what unfolded as it left me stranded for the first time.
If you would also like to live on the the edge of reliability this is the Chinese pump i'm currently using for the stage 2 lpfp. As mentioned in the video it seems to be holding up for 3 months now running e60. I will update this description if it does fail. ebay.to/36gnU0m
I would highly recommend running one of the BMP fittings instead of the supplied fuel line. bit.ly/2vbJgiG

Thanks, it was really much easier than i was expecting. Then again having the JB4 on hand to quickly diagnose faults is priceless. I was able to get the JB4 app loaded and use it to check for faults while still slowing down coming off the highway. Being able to check a few things why the fault is active is really handy. I don't know why but i always look straight at AFRs, lean means probably an issue with fuel, rich probably an issue with spark and work back from there.

Best road side - being on the road, dyi fix with tips. Amazing. Enjoyed that immensely. I learned many things. Thank you. It was almost like being there. I was screaming: "Noooooo" because you did this without towels. I would several cheap towels and paper towels first. But you were pros, no spilling. Deeply impressed Also am I the only one who really liked the look into the tank? it looks like an aquarium

When i went back to work to grab the new pump, i sort of went through a check list in my mind of every possible tool i might need to do this and it wasn't until we were on the road i realised i didn't grab any rags. It would been messy swapping the pump in the bucket thats for sure. On a side note e85 fuel smells so much more potent than regular 98, but speaking from experience if you do get any on the interior it seems to evaporate completely with in a few hours, to the point where you can't smell it at all, unlike garlic aioli kebab sauce. I had an issues with my new fuel line when i first installed it for the flex sensor, the first time i pressurised the system, it popped off the fuel reg and basically blasted a steady stream of fuel at 70psi all through the interior for a few seconds. Good times, i cleaned everything as much as i could but 15 mins after the fuel smell was strong, then by the morning you couldn't even tell. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video. We will try and bring more of this sort of content to the channel, just hopefully not from the side of the highway.

Wow hose quality top notch! Good to see the fuel pump was fine though. Just a question with the fuel pump install did you delete or keep the factory venturi on the stock pump? or did you cut the bucket open abit much like some diy's out there. Anyway, been watching the channel for awhile keep up the good work guys.
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
Well, I actually removed the Venturi and left the little one way valve in there (which according to a lot of folk is a no no). I tested it and fuel flowed in through the valve at an ok rate, definitely faster than one of these engines will consume at low load. The bucket will fill from the bottom obviously and the valve keeps the fuel in there, although it’s not a perfect seal. As the regulator returns fuel to the bucket basically I’d need to consume the whole bucket of fuel to run out of fuel on a pull, it’s only going to trickle in through the bottom, but under normal use the bucket will always be full to the point where it overflows from the regulator. For road driving it’s been fine, if I was doing circuit track days where your under full throttle for a long time, I’d re-think, but I like this setup as it should give me some more safety on a low fuel level if I get caught out somewhere. The only reason I didn’t go bucketless was the fear of never being able to really go under 1/4 of a tank, where I’ve ran this down to under 1/8 of a tank and she’s always sweet. I often do logs before and after fuel fill ups to see how everything is running and fuel pressure has never been an issue until this video haha. I will do some flow testing when I switch to dual pumps, but I think I will have to go to a cut/open bucket when the port injection is installed. Well see. But yeah for one walbro on street use the Venturi definitely doesn’t seem to be needed. I’ve done from a stand still to the top of 4th gear wot logs and lpfp pressure was always sweet when testing. For the price this stage 2 setup cost it’s been really good. Stage 3 coming soon.... annoyingly the bmp fuel fittings cost as much as these pumps 🤣😂

That M3 sounds amazing. If you need an extra set of hands (behind the scenes) for the videos or a tow vehicle (Nissan Patrol) i'm happy to help out. Moved up 14 months ago from Melbourne and a bit disappointing with the lack of car scene!

@@ZeroTo60Tube Yeah just in Buderim. I was in the market for a 335i 2 years ago but missed out due to my son being born and then ended up buying a stockish S14 which is sitting in a garage in Melbourne.

Well i guess on the plus side, if you did buy a 335i a couple of years ago you'd have been hit hard with the depreciation stick. They seem almost worthless right now. So much car and performance for the money. We will see how things progress with this channel. We'd love to organise meet ups for car guys on the coast, if we do organise something we will make a vid on the channel about it thats for sure. The boxing day rev battle was very last minute, but we all enjoyed it.

@@ZeroTo60Tube The 335 was around $16k mark, very clean and fairly low km. Not sure what they have dropped to but still plan on getting something later on when i'm sick of the Nissan.

hey Guys great channel love all the vids. Question? even though the lpfp is low on pressure why sometimes wont the car even start only crank. I'm having this issue now where it will stall out after long drives but after i let it sit for some time it will fire to life and drive ok ?
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 3 жыл бұрын
That is most likely your ekpm or fuel pump controller. The early N54s fitted with the EKPM2 modules are prone to overheating as they age and it shuts the LPFP off. The EKPM is behind the right side rear seat bolster. Check it out. You can replace it or some people fit cooling fans to them. I just grabbed a cheap one of ebay and it has been sweet in my car.
@copper067
@copper067 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for reply I did do a swap of the ekpm2 module to a ekpm3 and coded it but still getting occasional long cranks and sometimes stalls only to not start at all till after a little time goes bye. I’m going to just change the lpfp like you guys did and crops the fingers. I’ve done a new hpfp already so that shouldn’t be a problem. Anyway I still welcome your vids I learn a lot. Thank You!

Zero To 60 My 335 has downpipes, inlets, 5inch intercooler, aluminium chargepipe, running MHD stage 2+, I dont think my LPFP is keeping up with the fuel requirements? I was thinking to go Protuner Stage 2 LPFP. What do you think? I recently replaced the LPFP with another second hand unit, code still popped up :(
@ZeroTo60Tube
@ZeroTo60Tube 4 жыл бұрын
@@raihanhussain4188 The protuner kit looks nice and simple, i do like it. You do get what you pay for and i think in that case you are paying for a nice drop in solution. If you a re handy with a bit of DIY you could make that yourself for a fair bit less. I went super budget, really to see how long the Chinese pumps last. But mine is running a walbro copy for $30AUD, it now has a BMP walbro adapter for $25USD and that's it. Im running 19.5psi on e60 and she's been holding up for a few months. If you paired a genuine walbro with a BMP fitting it would be as reliable as the protuner kit, would just need some work to mount the walbro in your current bucket. But again its pretty easy.
