In this video I walk you through the process of diagnosing a
fueling issue on your N54 powered BMW. I am specifically trying to track down the cause of a hesitation between 2000 and 4000 rpm. I suspected the low pressure fuel sensor and use MHD flasher to data log and confirm.
I also summarize other common fueling issues to expect on your N54 powered BMW.
This is part 1, in part 2 I will change the low pressure fuel sensor to see if it helps.
There will a part 3 where I also change the low pressure fuel pump for maintenance or good measure. When you see the word "affiliate" listed beside any link in my description please know that this is a custom link and I will earn a small commission if you opt to purchase using said link. This is at no extra cost to you so it's a win all around :) Thank you!

I have been a subscriber of your channel for many years and you are the reason I rolled the dice and got a E90 N54 335i 3 years ago. Thank you for all the work you put out! I've had to do a few things on my e90 N54 but so far its an awesome car and alot of fun...i switched from a 2015 Jetta so thats where I am coming from. I have had trouble for the last 2 weeks cranking but the car would always start and I noticed a definite odor of fuel coming from the rear of the car. Now the car won't even crank. Battery and starter are good. I suspect a leak in the low pressure fuel pump and I don't think its priming anymore. Does low pressure pump play a major role in starting the vehicle or is that the HPFP?

I started a MHD data log before starting my car and could see that the "Rail Pressue (PSI)" was 72 psi. I almost certain my low pressure sensor is bad and have ordered a new one. Should that Rail Pressure reading give me confidence that the Low Pressure Fuel Pump is working correctly since the HPFP wasn't turned on, yet? Great Job on all content. Super helpful!

love your videos man! Always clean and clear on the BMW issues. I just got a P0087 code "Fuel Rail/System Pressure - Too Low" which many indicate the Low Pressure Fuel sensor which is $40 Lifetime Warranty from FCPeuro. I bought the low and high pressure sensors just in case and also my new Eldor pencil style coils for my F10 N55 engine! If this doesn't solve my issue with the code then I have no choice to replace that costly damn High Pressure Fuel Pump ($600 Lifetime Warranty latest version) but my car starts in about 3 to 4 cranks with this P0087 issue when before it started right up on the first crank. It always and still Idles perfect and steady just that when I drive off even on slow speeds when the car has not warm up completely i get the "Drivetrain Malfunction" and goes away when I decelerate. I do smell unburden gas from the tail pipe when I inside idling and it didn't use to do that. Hopefully my Low pressure fuel sensor is all that is to fix this issue and can't wait to upgrade my coils to the Eldor brand. Also my car before all this use to hesitate and make a jolt motion when idling when starting the car and annoyed the heck out of me, so one day when I installed my new serpentine belt with all it's new pulleys I took out both Vanos and cleaned them out with the help of a 9V battery that make them holes open and close in order to be cleaned... When everything was put back, that hesitation was gone! Cleaning the Vanos did the job. Now I do notice that the car somehow goes below idling speeds to the point the motor is almost silent and feels like the car wants to stall, yet the idling arrow on the dash is always steady, I'm thinking the Low pressure fuel sensor fails to provide a steady flow of gas to the High Pressure Fuel Pump to keep the motor running smooth at a constant flow when idling and it is now that the LPFS wasn't failing before but now it did and giving me those symptoms to fix!

Hi Vehicular DIY. Thank you for the channel. I have a active 29F2 code (high pressure fuel system, fuel pressure). It's intermittent, with a recent prior misfire in cylinder 2 at car starts. -- In morning starts about 15 seconds in, the car begins to rough idle/hesitate. --30 seconds in, the car goes into limp/reduce power. Showing an active 29F2 code (high pressure fuel system, fuel pressure). --If the car can make it past 30 seconds from start, the rough idle subsides, and the car drives normal. I see you use MHD to verify the low pressure sensor is reading/sending accurate values to the DME. I dont have MDH. I have INPA, and other free diagnostic apps, which only reads fuel rail pressure.

Extremely informative video. I might be having similar issues. Its N55. Out of 10 times I get long crank. It's like 3-4 secs long. Generally it happens after restarting the car after a trip. Restart after overnight is fine. Also I always switch to ignition ON and then start- if I directly start by pressing clutch it takes 3-4 secs to stat. I m MHD stage 2+ tuned. No issues with power -pulls up pretty hard in all rpm bands. I checked the rail pressure (mhd monitor). After a drive it was appx 72 psi. Then after 30 mins- it jumped to 55 psi straight from 72. The drop was not gradual. It fluctuated between 72 to 55 and finally settled down to 55 psi. So at this moment I m not sure if it's the regulator or the sensor. Fuel pump was replaced 2 yrs ago. Thanks. Oh..and no codes.

NOTE: Reading the n54 High Pressure Fuel Pump RECALL, it states that the Low Pressure Fuel Sensor will need to be replaced it when doing a testing on it if it reads above 6.7 bars (97 psi) than the sensor is bad and needs to be replaced. If it reads below 6.7 (mine with the latest upgraded version reads at a stable 87 psi) than the sensor is good!

Im wondering if me not inputing the correct information about the battery on ista p is causing the issue. the car knows it has a new battery, but it doesn't know that the new battery has possibly higher amp rating than oem bmw battery. I replace both HPFP and LPFP and use MHD custom tuning with two tuners and there is still hesitation when shifting after 2,3,4...pulls back then goes forward... don't know if this is the same...previously it just shifted and went forward continuously without pulling back before launching. And all sensors are also replaced. So it may be a map issue...got another map coming soon..each map that comes there is less pull and less hesitation so I am thinking it's a map issue. No misfires, not rough, immediate crank.

That reading of 80PSI is coming from your sensor...what your sensor THINKS the pressure is. It either means that you truly have 80psi in the line because your fuel pump is pushing too much fuel, or it means that your sensor is bad and THINKS there is 80PSI in the line. The DME targets a pressure of 72.5psi, which is more than adequate for the car's demands. There is no good reason for the pressure to be much higher. If the sensor reads higher than 72.5PSI, the fuel pump will be told that it can back off a bit, resulting in the actual pressure in your line being lower than 72.5. In my case, my sensor was reading as high as 88+ PSI, which eventually caused the engine to stall, because, in reality, there was far less pressure than what the sensor said. I changed the sensor, and now my pressure reads pretty steady at 72.5.

Update on my BMW F10 535I M SPORT, after replacing my Low Pressure Fuel sensor to the latest upgrade & upgraded with the latest short fuel line and the gas smells where instantly eliminated. Yet the 3 to 4 second cranks at cold start continued, my HPFP would read at a bit less of 100 psi until warmed it up and turn off the car wait a few seconds and restart the engine and the High Pressure Fuel Pump would have the correct 700+ psi at idle..... Well after a few days, I thought to myself that maybe the Low Pressure Fuel sensor needed to be "reset"..... So yesterday I Turn on the key until all lights (except the Check Engine light) turn off. Then turn off the ignition, waited 10 seconds and repeated the process for a total of 3 times! Somehow this seemed to reset the sensor as the car starts right up, no more smell, checking the Rail Pressure via BimmerLink shows a mPa 5 at idle which equals to about 715 psi. The Low Pressure Fuel Sensor monitors a 599 to 600 kPa which is 87 psi and very stable and stay there in all accelerations and idles.... When the car turns off the Low Pressure Fuel psi goes up to a healthy 699 kPa which equals to 101 psi and ready for the next engine start! So somehow it seems the latest upgraded Low pressure fuel sensor design is a major improvement...... I received my new high pressure fuel pump from FCPeuro but I will continue to test to see if maybe my car is all fixed with just eh low pressure sensor and return the new pump back.... Car Scanner, BimmerLink and MHD Flasher scanning features are amazing for any BMW!

This has been fix 3 years ago... It ended up being the High Pressure Fuel Pump ($500 - $700 new). The high pressure and low pressure sensors must also be replaced. These 2 sensors are very cheap and must be OEM as well. I have fix lot's of things on my F10 M-Sport as I just did the motor and transmission mounts, all professionally done by me with all the proper tools, all original OEM parts and torque specs to every bolt and nuts. Need to know anything else about the F10 let me know as I'm about to replace the complete driveshaft brand new USA made, with German Meyle HD flex disc "guibos" and differential mounts as well the proper way! @@RussianAudiFILMS

so my sensor reads anywhere from 40psi-130psi in my logs when around 70+% throttle, any ideas? lpfp done,(walboro), new ekpm3 module, new hpfp, new fuel line behind the hpfp, new index 12s. only things i haven’t done are the lpfp sensor, valves need cleaned, and im in the process of putting injection clamps throughout the fuel system. im lost, can send logs if needed

The LPF sensor is known to go bad (vibration, heat, years worth of fuel), and according to people on the forums, it is more likely to fail than the HPFP and LPFP. The LPF sensor is relatively cheap ($50 - 150 depending on whether you get it as a kit), so it is worth trying. It should have been replaced when you replaced the HPFP, because it sits right next it. Replacing it is not technically hard, it's just a bit of a PITA because you have to remove your air intake manifold to get to it. It takes about 1 - 2 hours depending on how quick you are with your tools. My LPF sensor failed (i believe), and my symptoms were: slight stumble at idle for a month or so, then, completely out of nowhere, at a red light, the car stalled and refused to start. When I let it cool down for about 20 minutes, I could get it to start again for about 1 - 2 minutes. Checking the codes, I got a 29DC, 6292, and 6293. The first basically says that the cylinder injection was shut off; the other two report over current and under voltage to the fuel supply. I checked my EKPM and it was the newer version and nothing looked fried. So, I checked the fuel pressure at idle (when it would allow me to start), and it was reading unsteady and upwards of 88psi...then it stumbled and stalled. Getting it started again, it would bounce all over from 60 - 88psi. My theory is that the sensor was reading a higher value than what was really there and reduced the voltage signal to the LPFP, starving the engine. I replaced the low pressure sensor (walnut blasted the intakes while in there) and now the pressure holds steady at 72.5psi. There is a slight variance when stepping on the gas, but the DME is supposed to target 72.5psi. I haven't taken the car out for a drive yet, but i let it idle for 30 minutes...still holding around 72.5, no indication that it was going to stall. If you have the skills and tools: replace your sensor and clean your valves while you're at it. The two aren't really related, but you must expose your valves to get to the LPF sensor. It seems that you've pretty much replaced everything else, and despite what others say, your low pressure should not be erratic.

@@jlwagner79 this helps a lot, since asking i serviced injectors again and still nothing. so the readings being off because of the sensor makes sense. and if it reads wrong, it sends the wrong input therefore making it gasp for more. thanks a lot boss!

Hey man can you help me out, when i bought my car it was running fine (aside from blown turbos and waterpump) but then it randomly died and hasnt started since. I got cam position sensor codes, then replaced the sensors and waterpump and tried starting again. Car cranks for days but no start. Finally got MHD hooked up and got the 29F3 code for fuel low pressure sensor-electric but the cam codes are gone and my car still wont start. The only reason I’m asking this is because your car still ran with this issue I believe?

@@ddrive1022 i managed to get the car started by priming the fuel pump about 6 times before starting. (Put car in accessory, wait for all lights to go off, pull key out, open and close door, repeat). But after i got the car started it it idled like a rotary 13b, purely electrical issue not mechanical. Months later i figured out i had a few melted wires which ended up blowing some fuses. One of the greatest mechanics ever fixed it for $550 (charged $125/hour).

@@PR0bro Dang, that's a tough find. I figured my problem out, I mixed the fuel pump and fuel level sensor cables at the pump, after a turbo replacement, they are identical. Glad you got it sorted. Cheers.

I have some fuel problem with my n54 335i in which the car will turn on but then die right after due to no fuel pressure. I dont know if its the LPFP or HPFP. I recently replaced the low pressure fuel regulator with the help of one of your videos and it fixed a leaking problem as my rear drivers side wheel had fuel smell comming from there. Everything ran fine for a few days but now my car would start then in a couple seconds die to no fuel. I have a half tank of gas so that wouldnt be a problem. Just trying to find out if its the LPFP, HPFP, low fuel pressure sensor, or something else. Throwing the code P142e

I literally just had this issue on my 2007 335i. I replaced the HPFP and the car now runs, but I cannot get rid of the P142E code. I'm idling at 700rpm instead of 600rpm, but I'm not going to be anal about that. I also keep having a misfire in cylinder 4, I'll replace the spark plug and it will go away, but give it two weeks and it returns. I just bought the low fuel pressure sensor, but not installed it yet. Hopefully this sensor fixes all the issues I've been fighting with for the past 4 months...

Holy cow! Is that at idle? Have you replaced the sensor? It is quite common for them to fail with age. My 535xi started stalling at idle. Fuel pressure was erratic and upwards of 88+ psi. I replaced the fuel pressure sensor and the pressure is now steady at 72.5-ish...no stalling, problem apparently solved. Did you end up resolving the problem? (I realize i'm replying 2 years later)

So you really seem like you're familiar with coding e90s. My e90 has an issue with its idrive, I live in Houston, galleria area. If it isn't too much trouble could we meet somewhere, and check if my idrive is stuck in transport mode? Someone mentioned resetting it in ncsexpert may help it. I'd pay you $ of course.

It may be possible to scan the module for codes using DIS, only DIS can clear transport mode as far as I know. With regards to scanning using NCS Expert, NCS Expert is for coding to scan you would use INPA. Your car has the CIC idrive so I'd have to double check that my software is compatible, what year is your car.
