BMW external plastic trim always fades - but I will show you a method of restoring them back to their original colour for at least FIVE YEARS!
Teak Oil: amzn.to/3foz7l4
Scourer: amzn.to/2L31ZBy
This is another episode in the Lock-Down Series, and this will give you something useful to do that makes your car look so much better. This is a method I have been using for at least 20 years and it has proven to be a great method of getting plastic parts back to their original colour. This plan has worked on the E32, E31, E28 and E38 so far - later models use different plastics (it didn't work on the E64).
But don't take my word for it, have a look at the results!

Love your videos - big fan - I've had a 645ci convertible from new (2004) and the biggest moan for me is the big area of plastic the rear area of the hood fins sit on and where the rear window pops up from - I'd love to see what you suggest for that - would teak oil do that? Its a slightly softer plastic

Thanks Tim.Love your work. In light of this being the first time you have applied Teak Oil to the weather strips and door handle surrounds, would you recommend masking off painted areas, to avoid the unwanted application of Teak Oil, or, is it easy to remove the dried product without damaging the clear coat?

Timm I’m a little concerned about those heavy scratches after cleaning with the scrubby pad. Am I seeing the result of other scratching? Also, have you ever simply cleaning and applying a ceramic coat? I’ve bought some after seeing a good review but have always used Solution Finish brand treatment lately and it’s pretty great stuff.

Hi Timm, Maybe the tissue is better even for the front Grill and backplate parts? Im afraid that i need to scratch teak oil from the surface in some years and it looks like the teak oil was maybe to fat on the surface... After rubbing in the teakoil and letting it dry, have you rubbed it with another towel or what is the procedure ? I watched the whole video but I’m not sure if you mentioned it

Is that rear window trim rubberized? My Ford belt molding is, and the rubber dries out. I strip the dead rubber off using carburator cleaner sprayed onto a rag. It takes just a little elbow grease, but it looks better for years. Coating it with boiled linseed or teak oil occasionally may keep it looking good forever.

I have to take issue with this method Timm: The steel wool creates scratching in the plastic surface. It will look good for a while and a distance, but plastic, unlike wood, is not porous and cannot absorb the oil so it remains on the surface until it evaporates. Might be better just to spray paint a semi-matte black. Less damage.
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation
@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I have to disagree! I only show routines that have worked for me for a few years, and Teak oil on plastic is one that has worked for many years. Also, some plastics are absorbent - in fact, plastic waste is used industrially to get rid of oil - it is also used environmentally for the same purpose. Polyolefins, including polypropylene (PP), and polyethylene (PE) are well known to absorb oil. Not all plastics absorb oil, I have certainly come across plastics that teak oil just sits on the top of - but the old plastic on the E31 (and E32) readily absorbs the oil and the effect lasts for years. Go on, give it a go!

This is the first time I've seen this method used outside of a couple of classic car forums and it has to be said, it does work though it's been a long time since it's been mentioned. PussyGalore, you are right in that it can leave scratches but you avoid that by using minimal pressure and realistically this only really gets used to remove old teak oil if the job has been done before, if it's the first time you're doing it then a normal wash combined with a wipe using a watered down mix of isopropyl alcohol will remove any previous waxes and contaminants allowing the teak oil to do its job. Tim, this also works on the E63/64 windscreen cowl but since it's so big I had to use the bath to clean it when I last did it lol, it can be done in situ but I wanted all the edges clean which as you know means removing the pollen filter cowl and didn't want water etc getting down into the E-box and brake booster housings, used a Q-tip to apply the oil to the large round fastenings. Keep up the good work Hsurf.
