Comparing 2 similar BMW F800GS bikes, one is 2008 model and the other is 2010 model. Obviously the 2010 is a rattler.

My bike (2010) sounds exactly the same. Engine has 106.000 km on the clock and is still going strong!

I have mine since 2008 and it got the same sound since I bought it, now I have 218k on it and is running strong. Ride more and worry less!

218k? are you serious?

The skid plate is reverberating the sound on the bike to the right. The one on the left doesn't appear to have one. It's a common thing with dual sports especially. People seem to put heat foam between to dull the sound

I will check this also! Thanks!

@rublkb it seems (most likely) that it is in the gear box but still waiting to sort this out. :(

Have a listen to my f650gs twin (same engine, different cam and compression) and I have the exact same sounds. I read it is the fuel injectors. Just for fun, I added a tablespoon of ashless full synthetic two stroke oil to the gas and the injectors seem more quiet now. I run up to redline a lot, so I want to make sure the top end is well lubed in our temps of 110 -116 F. in Phoenix. You can see my video under "redonkilaus". PS, the dealer said my noise was totally normal.

@rublkb Mine could be slightly heard at 1k mark and mentioned this, over a year has gone by, the sound and vibration is getting worse and passed the 20k service also. What can i say, hope yours gets sorted out soon.

There is no noise when the bike is in gear with the clutch in or when moving forward. So in essence, the tolerances of the inner diameter of the gears on the high side, and the tolerance of the input shaft is on the low side, which causes the free floating individual gears to rattle on the shaft when in neutral. Other than that noise, the bike performs great.

Hola - So did you find out if it's the timing chain or what makes that noise?

One recommendation to all F800 owners who think their bike sounds strange: mine had worn out pistons and cylinders after only 750km (bought it as a demo bike - never a demo again!) but BMW needed six months to finally check the engine, after a lot of trouble with the local dealer. BMW replaced the engine on warrany, this one started leaking oil after six months. Same happened to a friends 800GS yesterday. Bought KTM, totally frustrated of BMW. Make them check it as long as you have warranty!

Ok. My 2012 F800GS with 2500 miles on it was making this same sound. I mean exactly. Knocking intermittently as if something was bouncing around inside the gear box or loose valves. My buddy has the same exact 2012 bike about one month older than mine with 1500 miles on it. We rode to Tennessee from Indiana this last weekend and I did not like this sound as it was worrying that a new bike would make this noise, while my buddies Trophy did not.

the problem are the injectors! Cheers

My engine sounds identical to the 2010, it is a 2012 F650GS Twin. Same engine different cam and tune. I was told the loud ticking is the new style fuel injectors, and that nothing is wrong. Mine also had a problem running too lean because it is the US version with a cat, and I just installed an Accelerator module from SOL2. See my videos dissing BMW if you hate them. lol.

I took mine to many places, off and on road and happy with it but it does have a character and it some times becomes nasty he he he

Not yet, you seem to get used to the blasted noises! ;)

What can i say? I have now 60.000km on the clock and nothing changed apart from it getting older ;) I guess what a friend told me a long time ago is "you get used to these things and learn to ignore them" ha ha ha

Timing chain. If the sound get louder when the engine is hot. My has 56.000 km a 2008 and need to change the timing chain.
@ZeroKenshin12 жыл бұрын
these are my opinions =) 1. Rattling noises caused by valves tapping in cylinder head due to tight timing chain. 2. The exact opposite of theory no.1 (but after long mileage traveled.) 3. Basically requires valve clearance service to be done No matter how loud that tapping rattle may be, It'll still run fine but leaves you worrying, So it'll be best to to still approach an mechanic about it . CheerS!

It seems that we are the only ones that think there is something wrong and need to find ways to solve this ... asking them its always the "there is nothing wrong" ha ha ha
