In this DIY and How-To video, we'll show you how to remove and replace the common hood and trunk "roundel" emblems on most BMW models. We'll also show how to change the colors of the blue and/or white sections of the emblems. This can also be applied to the wheel emblems, using the sections included in the color change kits.

Thanks for the advice. I had to ghetto rig a non-marring tool by putting a sock over a small metal baby spoon.

@BavarianAuto E39. Yes I saw that they have two sizes--the ones that fit in the holes on the hood won't fit the trunk holes, which have a shorter diameter. It's all good. I figured it out but appreciate your response.

@djc2k2k - We did this video on a new hood that had never had an emblem installed. We installed the grommets and then the emblem .... in order to show the removal process. You are correct in noting that the original emblem may require a bit more work to get off (some do actually come off rather easy). Just take your time and be carefull.

Much easier to push the old emblem and grommets out from the underside of the hood. Used the back of a set of vice pliers, which worked well. Not sure if all the models have two holes in the underside of the hood, but my 2004 x5 did. BTW, if you look at this video closely it looks like the emblem had already been loosened, and even so, he nicks the paint on both sides while removing the grommets.

Ive gotten new emblems both back and front on my E39, and the two pins where there, so I didnt use the ones that followed the packing, I guess nothing is different from the original ones than the ones following?

The Z3 side grill emblems are adhered. In other words, they use double-sided tape. Pry the old emblem off and clean up the residual adhesive. the new emblem will have fresh adhesive tape already on it.

The section of video showing the color sticker and the shield install, is done on an emblem that is not fully installed. There are no grommets in place.

No, this is a new hood, out of our stock in the warehouse. The satin black paint is just a thin layer that is applied at the factory to prevent rust until the part is properly painted.

If the grommets are left behind and you can't pull them out, you can just push them all the way through the mounting holes. If the pins are broken off in the grommets, you can push the pins through the grommets.

Are the grommets for the hood and the trunk the same size? Because the ones I bought from you guys don't fit into the holes on my trunk. I thought all the holes were the same size.

If there is still some of the emblem attached to the tops of the pins, grab the pieces with pliers and twist and pull them out. If it is just the pins, push the all the way through the grommets.

on a 2007 328.....the trunk emblem decal just flew off and i recently found it blowing around on my street.....the stainless disc is still intact on trunk.....can i purchase a new black and blue disc..your video shows every situation except mine?lol or do i have to purchase a whole new emblem?

We typically install new grommets so that they are nice and tight in securing the pins on the emblem. The old grommets may be usable, but may not be real tight.

Yes, you do need to replace the complete emblem.

The after-market roundel I bought on ebay won't push entirely in so that is completely flush with the hood. It rocks slightly at the 12 and 6 o'clock positions. The grommets I got from the dealer. Do you know what the problem might be?

We're not sure what you are asking, here. Are you talking about the blue protective film that we show at the 0:44 time mark? If so, this Just comes on some of the new emblems and it is intended to be removed.

If the pins are broken off and still in the grommets, just use a punch or small phillips-head screwdriver to push them all the way through the grommets. Tap the tool gently with a hammer if needed.

are those grommets useless after removing original roundel? is that why you have new ones? or are you using the new ones because it came with the roundel?

There is a possibility for you to damage the hood. This is why you do need to be careful. Protect the working area with a rag,or you could also apply a couple layers of painter's tape around the working area ... just in case you slip wit the tool.

@TheLarryBrown The emblems are not sealed. However, they are sometimes difficult to get started. In this case, we typically apply a few layers of tape around the emblem, on the paint, at the 3 and 9-o'clock positions. Then use a sharp small screwrirver to CAREFULLY Jab into the edge of the emblem and pry it up enough to get our tool under the edge. DO NOT pry one side too high, gouging the paint on the other side. We have also heard of sliding a fishing line under the emblem to lift it.

We only sell BMW original hood emblems. These are not aftermarket. Yes, they do have issues even with these original BMW units. They do have a warranty. Just let us know.

hi, great video, I have a 1996 bmw 328i, is the process the same for trunk emblem, is it also the same emblem for both front and back? Thanks in advance

The rear emblem in replaced in the same manner as the front. The rear emblem on the E36 3-series (your 96 328i) is the same as the front emblem.

We recommend new grommets, as the old ones may not secure the new emblem properly.

Yes, the rear on the E30 3-series installs (and is removed) in the same manner as the front emblem.

Nice video but it's not that easy. The old emblem had already been removed before so it seemed very effortless. I finally was able to remove it by inserting a credit card to loosen it and then inserting a small screw driver in between to pry it off.

The wheel emblems are glued on to the hub cover part. They just "peel' off.

This is a new hood, out of the warehouse. We just have the emblem sitting in place, not fully installed with grommets, for the sticker install.

While there is a lot of interchangeability in the emblems, there are some differences between some of the models (especially trunk badges). What year 535i do you have? Our color change sticker kits do have all of the emblem sizes on one sheet.

The BMW dealer in LA charged me $150 for parts and labor to replace my hood roundel on my 2011 M5! Service guy said it was a complicated procedure!

The new grommets are the same as the originals. We usually like to have new one on-hand, in case the originals are no longer tight enough to properly secure the new emblem.

Most trunk emblems are replaced the same way as the front. Some are different though. What model do you have?

Well ... either wrong grommets or the emblem is manufactured incorrectly. We only offer genuine BMW roundel emblems, by the way.

It's not that easy. The non-mar pry tool is a great idea, don't try to use a screwdriver. But the emblem in this video is pre-loosened, making it look like it's easy to get the tool under the emblem. In reality the emblem fits tightly against the hood and forms a watertight seal, it's very difficult to get anything underneath there. Go buy a non-mar pry tool, but otherwise ignore this video and keep searching for a method.

Ben - Bavarian Autosport only caries original BMW emblems. There are indeed cheaper emblems available .... that are aftermarket cheap copies (are are illegal as well). The original BMW emblems are available here: www.bavauto.com/se1.asp?dept_id=136

That is a new original BMW hood and a new original BMW emblem. We're working on a bench. When installing the clear cover, there are no grommets securing the emblem to the hood. That's why it's moving.

While not 100% required, we do typically install new grommets so that the emblem will be nice and tight, once installed.
