UPDATE: NewTIS has been closed. Service Manual data is no longer free. DIY maintain your BMW at your own risk. • BMW shut down NewTIS. ...
I found an intake resonator / silencer, also known as a clean air pipe, from a salvage BMW i8 that had been totaled. I paid about $100 for this item and decided to cut it open with a dremel tool and disassemble it in order to see what it was made of. I then decided to put it on the BMW i8 just to see if it altered the induction noise. It now it sounds like a McLaren with a roof scoop! I unlocked the BMW i8 turbo noise!
After reading the article "Resonator Made of DuPont Zytel PLUS 95G35 aims to reduce the typical high-frequency air intake sound to a lower level, so improving driving experience," I learned that BMW, yet again, modified the BMW i8 in order to make it quieter. Here is that article:

Just like I had done by removing the performance intake path air box flap, I decided to continue on down the plumbing and find out what made this pipe make the BMW i8 quieter. If you haven't seen that video, check out:

One reason why intake pipes are made of plastic is to avoid them heating up and thus causing intake air temp to raise. Using aluminum for the mod is counter productive. Especially with the pipe running so close to the turbo.

Hi Pad, thanks again for a great video. Have some additional info on your modification after doing it 3 times... (yes, 3 times). First, no need to take of the wheel and the wheel housing. The 'clean air pipe' can be taken out easily from the rear hatch engine access. It took me exactly 12 minutes when I did it the third time. So to take it out: take off air filter top, leave air filter box and air filter. Remove the rubber elbow between air box and 'air pipe'. Now, the trick is to remove the Air tubes not at the 'air pipe' but at the other end , right next to the ignition coils. There are 3 air hoses to disconnect . One is a sensor. I had a relay hard time to disconnect the air tube clips....still a lot easier then at the other end. One more electric connector to disconnect and you can easily take out the 'clean air pipe'
@PatsGarageOnline
@PatsGarageOnline 4 жыл бұрын
I'm glad that you were able to accomplish this from above the engine. Thank you for writing this feedback. I had so much difficulty removing the 3 hoses that I needed to have an assistant reaching in through the wheel arch to loosen the connectors, just so I can pull up on them from the top of the engine. I was surprised how tight they were on there. The electronic device is actually a heater, not a sensor. BMW puts heaters at both ends of the PVC lines in order to prevent cold weather icing from blocking the line. I also had a hard time disengaging the metal clip that holds the clean air pipe to the elbow that goes to the Turbo, so I disengaged that from the wheel. It was so hard to loosen all of this and I was very frustrated, so I never uploaded any video. I think I would have had to remove the wheel to be able to get any recordings, however. Oh well. I'm very happy to hear that you got it without removing the wheel and thanks for replying.

I agree. I can always cut it back open and mess with it. I considered just using zip ties but I'm not sure how much heat is in there. JB Weld will keep those clamps from vibrating and loosening.
@JoshRReese
@JoshRReese 4 жыл бұрын
Oh, I didn't even think about the clamps. That's valid. I was just thinking about the deformation of the materials over time. Varied environments, heat cycles, harmonics of the materials causing rattles but, you're right. The worm gears backing out 1\2 turn is just as, or more likely. Regardless, solid exploration, explanation, and result, as per usual.

Hi Pat. I don't know what happened to my original comment, so I'll try and duplicate same. In a previous life you had to be a cross between a heart surgeon and a detective. 😉 This was a great upload. I think you should have performed one more sound test though, which maybe you could do in the future. Test without the factory air box filter installed. No, you don't have to take it out on the road and risk any road debris be drawn in, just an in-garage sound test. Well, this is my abbreviated comment version of my original. Don't get used to these short comments. 🤭 The Man of Few Words is out! Save the Wave🙋🏼‍♂️

Hi Peter! That's weird that your original comment disappeared. Sometimes I can see if comments are withheld for spam or other issues, but your's was not held for review. Sorry that happened! I actually have an open-air air cleaning and considered mounting that in place of the air box. That way I could get even more induction noise. But, there is so much heat in the compartment that I decided to forego. But, your test in the garage setting makes sense. It might be worth a shot the next time I'm in the engine compartment. Thanks!

Whenever I don't have at least one pot of Chock full O'nuts consumed for you detailed uploads, anything is possible. But this "lost" comment was unusually brilliant and exceeded all my previous brilliant comments.🤭 Anyway, I do hope you can do that one final "in garage" test. FWIW, I'll probably never have an I8 in my garage, but I really enjoy seeing all these "items" you are able to eek out of yours and your creativity in accomplishing these. Plus , what I've really found helpful is your links to various tools that you've purchased to accomplish some of your projects. Take care and keep those decibels on the rise!

Hi I just found out I can’t charge my US-Spec BMW i8 overseas in Germany 🇩🇪 so sad as military member can’t use hybrid cars in Europe I went to both Bmw dealership German and our on Base military sales he said this why they don’t offer hybrid overseas US-spec. The plug 🔌 is different that’s sadly to hear thought it was Universal plug 🔌. I even contact a military member who had an i8 over in germany for his duty time he confirmed it “ Can’t charge in Germany unless you buy typ1 to typ2 adapter “ ! @PatsGarageOnline
@PatsGarageOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Precisely. They wanted to make it so over luxurious and quiet that nobody could hear the engine so they had to develop fake engine noise. The car actually sounds closer to being a car than it ever has, now. And, the people on the i8 forum will be split. Some will love this, others will hate it and tell me that if I wanted that I should buy a different car because I'm changing what the engineers intended. Wait until I put a pops and bangs tune on it. @PatsGarageOnline
@PatsGarageOnline 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, based on EU regulations and BMW's mission, making the car quiet on the outside was definitely a goal. That fake noise that you hear on the inside of the cabin was necessary to hear when to shift in manual mode, but it's still weird. The internal augmented sound is built into the sound module which controls all sounds coming from the entertainment system, so it's impossible to turn it off. I wish it could be coded out but no one has done it, yet.

On my budget its impossible to get one with warranty now. I live in Mexico so warranty is for only 3 years. Im worried about the battery life. As i mentioned, its a very low milage car as usual around here. Any advise on how to validate battery life?
@PatsGarageOnline
@PatsGarageOnline 4 жыл бұрын
Battery life can only be verified by BMW. However, the battery is warranted for 8 years or 100k miles. Do, even if the car is out of warranty, the high voltage battery is under warranty separately. The battery is likely not to fail. The parts that seem to be failing most often are coolant system components, the Air Conditioning compressor (which also cools the battery, so this needs to be working) and the suspension shocks. As long as you have $10k USD available for repairs, you should be ok, however. Do not buy this car if you do not have that kind of money for repairs. Coolant issues can be up to $3k, AC compressor can be up to $8k and shocks can be up to $3k per shock, parts plus labor.
