I am just getting started with BMW bikes. I have always rode Harley and the culture shock is intimidating. I appreciate your videos that help give me confidence to try more self service of my bike. Thank you Kirk!

Nice easy to follow video. I will add a few additional tips from my past brakes flushes. 1. Clean thoroughly the areas above the ABS unit and the master cylinder and rear reservoir in addition to cleaning well the top of the ABS unit. I suspect more ABS units have been killed by ingesting dirt than through lack of fluid change. It is very easy to dislodge dust from the frame or wiring above the ABS when maneuvering tools to open and close the bleed valves. Brake fluid has to get really bad to be as harmful as one speck of dirt in a tight tolerance system. I wash my bike before each flush and blow it also with compressed air. And wash the funnel thoroughly before each use. 2. Though it nearly doubles the time, I remove all three calipers, clean the pistons well, compress them fully and then insert tight fitting wood blocks in place of the brake pads to keep the pistons compressed. You would be surprised how much old fluid gets left in the calipers, particularly if the pads are nearing their wear limit. I want to remove as much old fluid as possible when flushing. 3. Dropping a clean razor blade into the master cylinder will keep the geyser from erupting from the from master cylinder.

This is an excellent guide to servicing a braking system that many owners are afraid to touch themselves, because the "received wisdom" says it's too complicated. Chris demonstrates almost fanatical attention to detail and cleanliness, which makes the difference between bodging the job and being better than many "professional" shops. Thanks!

Hi Kirk, hi from Melbourne Australia and thanks for a great video as always! My only other advice when doing this is to remove each calliper from the bike one by one as you bleed it and retract the pistons as far as possible, and wedge them in with a suitable size block of wood prior to bleeding that specific wheel circuit. This squeezes the old fluid out of the calliper itself and allows it to be flushed when you run the pump. I never used to take this step, and despite annual flushes on my '03 K1200GT, I ended up with a seized front calliper and had to buy a new seal kit and rebuild it. When I did push back the pistons right back and flush the calliper the fluid was quite black, so obviously without this step old fluid gets trapped in the calliper despite the flushing process as the bleed valve is at the top near the brake hose entry. This allows moisture to build up risking damage to the calliper. Hope this makes sense, and thanks again for all your great videos which I really enjoy watching!

Thanks Kirk for this video. I did watch it before I flushed the brake fluid on my 2006 K 1200LT. I never knew that the reservoirs are in the ABS unit. A change from my older 2004 K 1200 LT.

Hello Kirk, I have watched a couple of your KZfaq videos, thank you for all the good information that you put out to help people like me. I changed all the brake fluid and the brake lines on my BMW, however my question is it possible to reset a 2002 BMW K1200LT ABS Systems? Once I changed the brake lines and bled the system without the fairing panels I rode the bike and it worked fine. I decided to put it back together about a month later, and now the brake light is flashing real fast and no whining noise from the ABS system. I’m not sure what the problem is at this point, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Ricky

Hi Kirk, I wanted to say thanks for these great videos. I have a 2004 bmw k1200lt and been out on it today and all ok for about 3 miles and then the break light started flashing and the breaks got to no breaks. Fluid levels are ok . What's my next step, would it be best to take it to a garage?

Be sure if you order the funnel from beamer boneyard that the threads fit your bike. I have an 05 and the thread on the funnel were much larger than the ABS unit. Make a huge mess!

Hi Kirk, don't know if you check comments on here. But I'm looking at a 2005 r1200gs at a Harley dealer . I don't think they have a history on the bike. It was a local trade in. My questions are ....1. is that the same braking system as the bike I'm looking at. 2. Is there anything I should look for 3. The bike has 135000 kms....if the brake unit works now, if I flush it....can it be saved...may be a dumb question 4. Should I stay away from it?
@kirksmotorrad
@kirksmotorrad 4 жыл бұрын
I certainly do check them. It is pretty much the same brake system. If it has rubber lines you will need to change them. Get on the GS forum and see what kind of other issues it may be prone to.
