I went from an FJR to a 2012 gtl. I’m sure the BMW is gonna cost a fortune to upkeep but after riding it the first time, i honestly don’t care. Find me another bike i can pile the groceries into that will do 90 in 4th while still on the on-ramp and i will try it. I told the sales guy after i rode a test ride that there were only two human reactions to that thing. Smiling ear to ear or sh*tting your pants in fear. It’s an amazing bike.

Sean, the early iteration of the BMW ABS system used an electric pump to both boost brake pressure and look after the ABS function itself. It was fitted to most of the models in the 1150 and 1200/1300cc range (GS, R, RS, RT and K). It wasn't particularly reliable, sounded like a strangled Hamster and the cost of replacement ran to over $3000 - often more than the value of bikes of 5 years and older. Also, if the pump gave up mid-way through a ride you had very ineffective brakes. Worse though was if the pump cut back in during braking. Now that was scary! They dropped this system around 2010 and began using a standard brake system with the ABS function taken care of by a brake distributor instead. Ironically with a re-engineered system the brakes lost none of the power from the earlier system. Tomorrows Larry Blag chat: BMW's weird flexible Printed Circuit fuel level sensor :-) lol

Trading in my R Nine T for a 2012 GTL. Will be picking it up tomorrow. This bike is very easy to ride and even going from the much lighter R Nine T it doesn't feel cumbersome at all and I felt right at home after about five minutes. I would recommend test riding one if interested in a touring bike because I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Think I prefer about this to the Goldwing is that the pegs are higher and you can get almost knee dragging lean and the difference between suspension setting of sport, which is really sporty, and comfort is like having 2 completely different bikes.

I purchased 2013. GTL brand new. I have had zero problems with 28k miles. 38MPG @ 80 MPH!! You can save yourself a lot of money by doing some of the maintenance, oil changes, tires and brake pads. However, doing the valve check is a job for very skilled mechanic! That job requires The radiator to be dropped and if your valve clearances are out of specification, the cams need to be removed. I had the 16k service done and it was $1200.

I'll be riding my wing probably upto 200,00km by time I get a new one. At 45,000km mine isnt broken in yet. K bikes are just plain broken by then. I know. I'm on all the forums. K1200GT / K1300GT aren't as smooth as the K1600 - but they're a touch quicker! The 1600 is awesome but you feel the extra size/weight working against it a little. Having said that, the 6 is special, it sings to you all the while you ride it and I'd take it over the 4 most times. In fact I may be buying a K1600GT within the next few weeks.

It really sucks riding in the Georgia heat all bundled up. I wear jeans, laced sneakers, a full face helmet, and gloves, but I always wear a short sleeved shirt when it's above 80 degrees. I sweat so much as it is, that it makes me not enjoy riding at all. Then in the winter it's too cold. I can't win. Now, I only ride from 6-8 AM before it starts getting too hot. The other problem is the freaking bugs. I'm hardly riding anymore. What I really need is a BMW K1600GTL, a full heated electric suit for the winter, and a full air conditioned suit (if they even make them), for the summer. Otherwise for me, riding in these conditions is uncomfortable, and absolutely miserable.

@JayBearjaysbigadventure
@JayBearjaysbigadventure 4 жыл бұрын
The Grand America is built on the K1600 Bagger platform. It is lower and I don't believe the side bags are removable like they are on the GTL. Biggest difference in performance is the whole Bagger series is limited to 101 MPH. GTL is limited to 130. GT's aren't limited at all and will do 150+ in utter comfort. We maintain and modify our 2012 K1600GT, as well as multiple other cars and motorcycles. Join us for all the fun! - jaysbigadventure

A GW might be comfier but a GTL is more motorcycling fun. Can't stand the old GW's plethora of buttons but love the GTL's Wonder Wheel. For me (and I checked out the Concours, Yamaha FJR, BMW R1200RT, Triumph Trophy, GW and F6B), the GTL is the bestest best. A BMW 7-series on 2 wheels!!!

A bit more... The K12 would get rough at about 4k rpm until about 4300 rpm (about 90-95 mph), then it would smooth out and hum. Never took it over 100...at 80 mph it just got so quiet you could hardly hear it at all. The K16 is smooth from 0 to over 130...I didn't quite reach the top advertised speed (139). Some complained about how heavy the front end felt in slow speeds (ie. parking lots). I love it. It feels stable and comfortable. I bought it with 27k miles. I have put another 70k smiling-ear-to-ear miles on it. My only complaint has been that it wants to overheat if the ambient temperature approaches 80 or above, if I am stuck in traffic, or construction. If I can keep moving at 25/30 or above, it doesn't have any problem. I have had the radiator/cooling system worked on four times...each time they thought the problem was solved...no joy. Still, I am keeping my K1600GTL. It is the favorite bike of my life.

You uploaded this just yesterday 5:35 " the gold wing of the current year ..ya can't change the windshield" since when can you NOT replace a windshield on ANY motorcycle that allows you to mount a windshield on it? If you meant adjust the height of the windshield, you're wrong there also and apparently have researched the gold wing very little.

This bikes pull to the left and it is a common issue in this bmw. Bmw ignoring this all the way. My k1600 pulling so hard that if I barely touch the bars in second I am in left lane. Bmw can you respond to this or at list tell that before we buy the bike so we know about the issue and we do deal or not. Bmw stop hide this issue!!!

@@comedicsketches - you drank the BMW kool-aide on that one. There should be absolutely no pull in either direction. That 13' GTL is the only BMW that ever pulled. My 19' R1250 GSA runs as straight as an arrow just like my prior BMWs and every other bike I have ever owned.

BMW’s ARE expensive to maintain. Period. I loved my 1600 but have spent more in maintenance than any other bike I have owned. If you don’t think so, wait until you get the bill for the 18k mile service. Valve checks on this bike are Uber expensive and required every 18k miles. At MINIMUM you will pay $1200. If adjustments are needed it skyrockets and look to pay at least $2k for the labor and equipment. BMW is UBER expensive to own and maintain.

I have a 2012 K1600GT with 58kmi and the valves have not needed adjusting. The original plugs went 50kmiles. Like all dealerships, they want you in every few thousand miles for rape-and-pillage. You can easily do most of it yourself, and there are excellent independent shops as well. Try putting 60000 HARD miles on a big HD and see what the costs are! At least you're not eating cam chain followers, etc every 36k. Follow my channel to see how to maintain your BMW for very little money. - jaysbigadventure

We rode with a couple, on their 1600, us on our 05 1800 wing. We had fun, no issues with either bike. But after 3 hours of riding, his wife was complaining about butt pain. So, We had to take more pit stops. His wife asked my wife how she dealt with the butt issues. My wife said I have no issues, I have a lazy boy seat, lol When we stop at Eureka Springs AR. I let them ride the old goldwing around on the pig trail while we rode the tram around Eureka Springs. Needless to say, when they came back in, she told him to get a goldwing, sell the 1600 he wasn't happy, but he said the wing even though it's an 05 it was hands down better ride. lol . When we went out riding the next day, he tried to leave us behind on the back roads. The wing stayed right with him with no issues. The wing was purring along, not even breathing hard. lol We had fun on that trip.

Dan Hammack UH, Im the opposite. Ive always been a lover of goldwings. Started on a gl1100 standard and been riding them ever since. The 2018 is the first Goldwing I dont like. Im sure the engine and drivetrain is great, its a Honda. Im not sure about the front suspension, Im not gonna judge it until its been out a couple years. But, I absolutely hate the new look and appearence of a smaller bike. The tech looks great too but I cant believe they gave up luggage capacity. I feel like Honda is trying to appeal to an aging sport bike rider while leving longtime wing lovers sitting on the bench. Like Grandpa used to say " Dance with the one who brought you to the ball" Im now looking around for my next bike. Considered the transcontinental from Yamaha but Im not a VTwin fan. Im gonna look at that new BMW K1600B bagger, maybe I'll like it.

Another K1600 rider here. Very reliable; you couldn't break it if you tried. Seriously. Try it for yourself. My Goldwing F6B? Blew the transmission at 14,000 miles... and then again at 31,000 miles. I love that bike but that's the one made for gentlemen riders. BMW on the other hand makes bikes for people who THRASH 'em and ride HARD. They just don't break.

just bought a used 2012 with 27K miles. The brake pads crapped out on me when I inappropriately got on them to hard, but replacement with OEM parts was cheap and it took 20 minutes to take the rear fender and rear wheel off. Replaced the pads in 2-3 minutes and replaced the fender and wheel in 10 minutes. Looking forward to oil changes...ridiculously simple.
