You are correct. But sadly, every single vehicle sold as new in america in the last five years - essentially has a variation of an internet connection. Example, finance any new car over that time period for proof. Miss one payment, no problem - they’ll still mail you a courtesy reminder and also try to call. Miss a second payment by one single hour - they’ll send a signal so that your vehicle will not start. It will not start until payment agreements have been reestablished. Only the dealership or also only the financial company can bypass it.

And if you don't subscribe for the feature, you're still paying BMW for developing the required parts, service hierarchy and software that allows disabling the feature for you. Hopefully you're happy with your bang-for-the-buck for choosing the purchase a BMW car. It would be literally cheaper for BMW to allow all these features as standard! @@jrd33yep and back then it was very easy to manipulate the software to get every function and multiply license files. Back in the late 2000s and early 2010 we could easily unlock features in our cars the same way since the ECUs where easy to access with a numeric code. Today software developers made sure this is impossible with a forced connection to their server that “lends” you a license and checks for manipulations. The same thing car manufacturers do these days and it’s even more ridiculous since the car itself is still a piece of hardware. The problem is that people who have no clue just accept it. We should completely ignore companies who do such shady things, it is just insane!

As someone else said: this is RANSOM! Think about it: everything that's needed to provide this feature is already in the car, meaning you bought and payed for it already! You own ALL the necessary resources to use this feature, therefore there's no justification for the manufacturer to deny you from using it! (And no: it supposedly being "cheaper" for BMW to built it into the car regardless of whether the customer specs that feature or not is NO justification. First off that doesn't change the fact providing the feature costs BMW nothing after the sale and secondly, if it is indeed cheaper, then this should just be a base model feature!) It's the sane as if BMW sold you the car, built to your order and when you come to pick up the car, they want to charge you a fee for entering their garage where the car is parked and otherwise refuse to give you the car. That's ransom! Also, the fact that BMW can just remotely disable turning on the feature means it's sabotaged. This is different from a feature like map updates, that cannot work without external resources, because there's no technical reason for the automated high beams to require external resources and the only reason it does is so BMW can disable your use of it, which should be considered sabotage!

I have a 2016 bmw 750. A couple years ago my wife was in another city when the car battery died. She had it towed to Firestone who put a new battery in for 270 bucks but car still wouldn’t start. After 3 hours of troubleshooting tech saw online that the car has to be programmed at the dealership to accept the new battery. Delicate electronics I was told. What a joke. You couldn’t just have a program button in the car to analyze a new battery? Firestone put old battery back in and didn’t charge my wife a dime. Holiday weekend, car towed for second time to local bmw dealership, dealership closed, my wife is in another state, had to rent a car to get back home. Over 1500 dollars waisted over a dead battery including bmw charging me over 700 for the new battery. DO NOT BUY A BMW. Expensive to buy, expensive to fix, and they are not reliable vehicles. In the last 6 months I have had $7000 worth of mechanical work done. The air shocks need to be replaced next and the estimate came in at $14,000. The guy at auto shop said he was shocked at the price of bmw parts. Oh, and to keep with the subject of Louis’s video, I pay a yearly subscription for access to certain features on the car.

I tried to call the drivers test building, but kept getting redirected (it was a 1-800#) so I got frustrated. I drove to the testing center. There was one employee and myself in the entire building. I said ‘can I get a business card so I have your number, I need to make an appointment’ Tje guy proceeded to tell me they do not have a phone in that building, no phone line, no calls in or out…you’re supposed to use an online portal, which had crashed on me 4 separate times. My Hyundai had that 10 years ago for free. Also BMW is really scamming company! I bought the motorbike GS 1200 R for almost 23.000€, 4 years later, always serviced and washed only at retailer with original parts, suddenly display dies. I never got caught in rain or anything, but bike was services and cleaned 1 week prior to breakdown. Anyway, I get to dealer and they didn't want to fix it and wanted 1400€ for new display which I didn't even break, so I turned to representative of BMW in my country and they also refused. Then I emailed BMW directly (in German HQ), which redirected me back to our country representative and they refused me again. It was not my fault display broke down, for reason dealer told me that it was water damage, but they refused to take responsibility with damaging it during cleaning. I would take even 50% discount, but they didn't budge. So I sold bike for 13.000€ and bought KTM instead. F**k you BMW, never again. The only downside is that BMW was really really good bike for driving and had electronic suspension and I was able to make 600+km per day, with KTM I almost die after 400km trip. But never again BMW, I won't buy even a screw from you as you screwed me over over your mistake!

You know, one of the promises of capitalism to consumers is that as time marches forward processes get more efficient. Technology gets better. New inventions come out. And as a result, the products we buy get either cheaper for the same quality or the quality goes up and stays the same price. That's the promise for consumers. In reality, there's only so much juice you can get out of an orange. Because companies have prioritized the other promise of capitalism, unlimited growth for their investors, we get BS like headlight subscriptions. I'm not saying get rid of capitalism, but maybe some regulation would be nice. Some consumer protections. Because without these protections the pitchforks come out.

Absolutely spot on, re freedom. I've been messing with computers as a hobby since the very early 90s and have seen the amazing progress in capabilities along side this war on freedom waged by the big tech companies. Microsoft has been trying to force the customer to do what Microsoft wants, rather than responding to customer demand for more than 2 decades at this point. A horrible, invasive or freedom limiting feature is introduced , there's a backlash when they take the old option away, and Microsoft says "no this isn't a bad thing, you definitely need this" despite all evidence to the contrary. They never learn. Apple, Samsung, and so many others have jumped on board that mindset train now too. The only thing stopping them from brainwashing people who don't know any better are the people who push back and try to counter the corporate propaganda, letting people know they can have and HAVE had better. People don't seem to realise so much is being taken from them in exchange for a little convenience here and there.

This absolutely drives me INSANE! I have this feature on my 2011 Mercedes...I appreciate that this was no doubt an extra paid for feature or part of a "pack" that had to be paid for...but at least it was an option, paid for at the initial time of purchase and with the car forever after.

This all started out with computer games when you'd have to pay to unlock features that were in the game that you just bought or the subscription service for MMORGP's. After that it extended in to the other industries. It is absolutely crazy that we now have cars with features that we have to subscribe to get the use of. What next? Range limits on the car unless you pay more? Mad.

I guess just be happy you don't need to pay a monthly subscription to brake quickly, yet. Slow breaking is free but sudden breaking $17.99 a month.

You know what the worst part is? Like with the car stuff? Subscriptions make sense for something that is a service. A streaming company for example is constantly adding new things to watch. A subscription to a car function is not a service. It's just a basic function being turned on or off by you paying for some dumb reason.

auto brights arent a safety feature. you can turn your own brights on. automatic headlights in general are not required. its them automatically coming on that is the "feature"
