It's a very nice bike. I test rode it when I was deciding whether to go for it or the Z1000SX when upgrading from my Ninja 650. I went with the Kwak because it was cheaper to buy and run, and I trusted Kawasaki reliability more than BMW's and also I have a dealer very close to where I live (though I didn't buy from them). I'm happy with the decision given my circumstances and am really enjoying the Z1000SX. The only thing I miss is the shaft drive (no chain maintenance hassle). I didn't like the dash when I test rode it, much prefer the dash on the Kawasaki. I still watch your maintenance videos whenever I need to do any work on my Kwak 👍🏼

Hi and thanks for the honest review. I own a 1200RS too and love it - had three GSs in the past, two oil-heads and a 2015 LC and I must say the RS is the non-bulky non-cumbersome GS alternative with the lovely 1200 boxer engine, which I´m a fan of. The RSs conventional front suspension also provides more feel than the Telelever which equips the GS. Comfort-wise, I´m 6´3" and find the RS almost as roomy as the GS - I have the 820mm seat fitted although I might go up to the 840mm one for a bit of extra legroom. Like yours, mine has bar risers fitted and the ergos are excellent. After watching your vid I´ll probably order a GPS relocation kit - looks like the one you installed is the MOTO MATE. Anyway, totally agree with you, the RS is underrated, probably because of the success of the GS, but in fact for road use, including city, IMHO it is the better sibling. Will be testing the 1250RS soon, just for the laugh, but in all honesty, I like the 1200 so much that I´ll probably be biased against the 1250. Well, that´s my hope anyway. Cheers!

Excellent review of a very excellent bike. Just returned from long trip after 3 days and have to say its great. I've owned a succession of R1200R bikes and now riding a very low mileage fully kitted 2016 RS. Better and better. Loads of usable torque, handles great, all the options are useful and love the electronic suspension and quick shift (after 2nd as you mentioned). I rode a demo 1250cc version and didn't find it much better performance wise. Think of the savings.

Thanks for the good review of the rs. I currently own a 2017gs and I love most everything about it. I like the leg room and the only complaint is it's just a bit tall for my 30inch inseam. I'm checking out the rs for a possible switch. Thanks again and keep on enjoying the ride.

Nice review! Regarding the indicator switch not feeling very positive, I've found on a couple of bikes that if you can open up the enclosure, then a quick squirt of WD-40 on the switch's mechanism can bring back that positive feel. It sort of dissolves the grime, allowing the mechanical detents to behave as designed.

What a great honest review. Thanks for doing this as I’ve just come from test riding an RS and a GS back to back. I rode the RS first and just totally loved it. I felt the GS was a bit noisy (wind/front end) immediately after riding the RS and also that it just didn’t seem as smooth. Almost clunky and ‘agricultural’ in the drive. Sure it’s taller and has more leg room and the luggage holds a bit more than the luggage on the RS but in t§eras of ride quality and pleasure it just gave the smile on my face that I think you are talking about. Being a shorter guy 5’9", I also didn’t feel the bike was just a bit tall for me. Have you got luggage for yours? The bar risers are a great idea which I’ll organise once I’ve found the right 1200rs now. Stay safe.

I rode one on demo and dropped it because the clutch was so unbelievably lite i've since bought an F800GT but i'm too big for it so this weekend i'm purchasing a 2018 R1200RS SE and i'm looking forward to it, prior to the 800 i had a CB1300 an awesome bike but like you I'm drawn to the clever systems on the BMW's.

Hi there that year flew by I remember when you got it cause I got my z1000 sx on the 18/10/19 the candy blue plasma 16 reg same has the one you got rid off I’ve done few changes on mine handle bar risers riders foot peg lowers shad rack for a top bow I’ll have to do a review of my Z biggest miles I done in a week was 1226 miles I had the seat made to fit me took 2 months backwards and forwards I like the bmw but I cannot get through my house no rear Access so I’m limited to what I can have bike wise thanks for sharing your review BSafe 👍👍👍👍

Spot on review. I’m new to the 1200RS and have been left wondering “why has this gone under my radar for so long?” I’m addicted to mine. Handles better than any other bmw boxer I’ve owned and much lighter than my old gsa. Why do people keep saying they’re dear to service? They’re not and they are cheap to diy. Do the easy ones and what you save pays for the dearer ones. Big improvements I made included Heli bar risers, mra screen and wunderlich standard height Aktiv comfort seat. With hindsight fitting the optional bmw gs style bars and risers is the better way but you need extensions to the clutch hose for that. I get 55mpg from mine and it pulls line a steam train. I have no interest in the r1250 being quicker. My mate has one and honestly? There’s not much between them. Fit full luggage and you have an inter continental mile crunching tourer that just wants luggage unclipped to release its sports bike dna. Fitted with Roadtech01 se tyres the handling is astonishingly planted. My only gripes are that bmw should have fitted proper shock crud protection and s decent hugger as standard plus when warm, my engine is really rattly, especially loud tappet knocking on the left cylinder.

Having had a lifetime of sports bikes but deciding I’m getting old and chose to go touring I decided BMW make touring bikes and searched and searched eventually finding a K1200S in like new condition with hardly any miles … loved it but 170bhp all it ever wanted to do was go fast ( I used to race bikes and I understand ‘fast’ but that bike took fast to a whole new level and in todays modern era ones licence wouldn’t last long 😢) and wanting a more sit up and beg riding position I considered the obvious GS but going the long way round to Tescos wasn’t my vibe but I liked the BMW quality , the heated grips , suspension on the button and most of all the shaft drive hassle free touring . So I decided upon the RS and fit risers … after a long search I found a one owner 7000miles with all the options /extras even a tinted larger screen and high bars ( very comfortable ) all I’ve added are a set of sw moto crash bars , Motorrad 6 satnav and ( it was still on original road 4 tyres) a pair of michilin road 6 .. that’s it and I can’t express how pleased I am with it .. only 125bhp but easily keeps up with mates on far sportier bikes yet I’m certain il enjoy a trip to Italy later in the year in relative comfort … it’s my forever bike and so pleased I made the change

Been a fan of the R1200RS for a few years now and just love the way it can 'get a shift on' when required, but is also very happy pootling along at village speeds when the mood takes. Out of interest, what bar risers are they - and did you have to mess about with the cables/hose length? Cheers.

Great honest review ... not really heard anything to negative about the rs 1200. everyone who puts a leg over one struggles to find really negative stuff.

Love my 2016 RS. Only downside is I need my Puig screen fitted after I had bar risers fitted. I am getting 60mpg!

I was curious about how you would rate this bike compared to the 1000SX I watched you service, but I think I already know that you like this better since you said you have never ridden a bike longer. Personally I tested the 1250RS and the Ninja 1000SX just after lockdown last year, and I went for the Ninja, because of its smoothness and I found it lighter here in the big city where I live. Also those cylinders in front of my shins at stand still really bothered me. Oh yes, then there was that awkward reach for the indicator switch, that didn't help.

Hi great review 👍👍regarding the seat is it the low seat version or it’s the normal one on a low setting ? Is it comfortable? The reason I ask is I ride the F750 with the low seat and it’s not comfortable at all ! Killing my arse bone 😂

I have an R and liked it so bought an RS too ...the dash on them does not bother me, easy enough the read.

had test ride on 1250rs really liked it but can't make my mind up between RT RS 1250 .

How do you find the windscreen, which I believe is an aftermarket piece?

I rode a r1250r when the dealer did not have any rs in stock, that bike was seriously fast and it felt like it was trying to rip my arms out. Coming from a vfr1200f with 173hp not expecting alot from the 136hp of the boxer engine i was left with a smile from ear to ear. Still I felt that legroom was lacking and also my hands went numb after only 40 mins of cityriding. This summer I will give it another shot and look for an RS, hopefully even Swedes will get onboard with the hype. 😁

Have you turned the traction control off/down and pulled wheelies?

I am seriously considering a used R1200RS as my next bike I have seen mixed comments as to which R1200RS came with "Cornering ABS" I have seen mixed comments online as to when the R1200RS was available with cornering ABS. Some say all Sport & Sport SE had it. Others say it was only if bike had "rider modes pro" Some say it has to have "ABS pro" on spec sheet. Other sources indicate it was not available before manufacture year 2017 subject to spec. Any ideas? Happy to be signposted to elsewhere I like the mods fitted. I recognise the very local Aware R1200RS has symmetrical lights plus the shift-cam but obviously a dearer bike to purchase. Thanks 👍
