I watched this because I needed access to the accessory socket to use as a source to power my new hard mounted zumo. Thanks so much.

Thank you for this video. I sent a video of all the screws and body panels to my buddy and said this might be the last air filter change.

I guess one should be grateful for BMW allowing you to change the air filter without having to also replace all the light bulbs, take off the wheels and the final drive ;-) Nice video! Now I understand why BMW service is expensive.

Amazing how many screws stand between the air filter and freedom.

It's not as bad as my Kymco AK500 I had. You had to take half the bike apart with many different tools of all size sockets/screw drivers etc to change the oil filter. The air filter was much easier, but at least with BMW it's one tool

@@ArcanePath360 it once took a trained BMW mechanic 25 minutes to replace the headlight bulb on my 2014 BMW R1200RT. A perfect example of a fcked up design that shouldn't have left the drawing board. Reminds me of modern days smartphones. Slick, elegant, but useless if you want to replace the battery yourself.

@@NMalteC It took me 2 hours to replace a bulb on a Burgman once. Should have taken 1, but I dropped the bulb in there and had to come up with some way of hooking it out. Everything round the steering column was mostly taken off to get my hands in there to wind it in. 2 months later, the bulb blew again. I gave it to the mechanic next time because screw all that. There are much worse bikes than the RT for maintenance. That said, I'm sure they could have made it easier to get at the air box. My only gripe with the bike is the clunky gearbox. Even with the Gearshift Assist Pro. At low speeds it's horrible changing gear. Unless there's something wrong with mine. I am getting the clutch looked at next week as the biting point keeps moving.

Thanks for taking the time to put this together and post it. Independent of anything you've done, and in no way a criticism of your efforts or work, I offer this instruction: "Disassemble to every component part, melt down wheels, replace air filter, re-cast wheels, re-assemble entire machine." Wait, WTF? Thanks, BMW. :) As I just bought one of these things, I'm not looking forward to replacing my air filter. :-/

Lots easier than a Honda Goldwing. On that bike one goes lots deeper to get to the air cleaner and one needs to remove lots more. The guys that put the air cleaners in these things in such a fashion should be hit with a club every day for the rest of their lives. I have had 2 gold wings and put a total of over 400,000 miles on them and am considering the BMW R1250RT for my next bike. I have done my own maintenance for years with the exception of valve adjustments and warranty work. The BMW looks like it will be less of an irritation to service depending on the intervals required. Why they are not designed to be easier to service makes no sense at all. Particularly since BMW has such a smaller dealer network than Honda. I suspect that if they were more owner friendly when it came to service they could sell even more product than they do now.

I traded my GL1500 Goldwing on a 2020 R1250RT this past spring. Pretty much everything I have looked at on the BMW seems easier to do than on the Goldwing. The air filter doesn’t seem bad at all after watching this. I recall tearing the whole top of the bike off (maybe exaggerating a bit) to do the air filter and sub and cruise filters. Then last fall taking almost the whole fairing and front off when my Speedo cable broke to be able to get to that. Just removing the rear wheel on that bike to change the tire (did the tire mounting myself) was a nightmare of parts spread around The garage. Nothing will be easy on a bike with the amount of stuff that is packed in such a small area. Either you are a fair mechanic or you just pay someone else and smile. I’ve accepted that. BTW, if you ride a lot by yourself you would love the RT, the wing was just too big for me riding alone most of the time. The weight difference alone is quite shocking.

Lots of comments about what a pain in the arse it is to change this air filter. My other bike, a 2011 Suzuki Vstrom, is no less a pain to work on. Modern motorcycles.......

The parts numbers would probably be useful. Perhaps you should consider inserting them.

I have written down the procedure for the air filter change, as is seen on the video: Air filter change - R1200RT 2015 Video - Air filter change: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ac-Jac18ytbUdac.html at 5’ minute position. Screws cannot be retrieved with a magnet: Take care not to drop them into the bike inner spaces. Note screws with a spacer and those without: With spacer for places with plastic flanges protruding. Marking, numbering or labeling screws as you remove them would be a good idea. (Else you need to have good memory.) Remove front seat: Take care to detach heated seat cable. You will need a: T25 torx screwdriver. (Preferably ratchet or electric.) An extension is usefull. Another larger torx is also used. Remove 2 screws each side in front of the seat - at the rear of the tank. Remove 2 screws at the top front of the gas tank. Remove 1 screw at top, in the middle front of the gas tank, inside. (Larger Torx.) Remove screws inside the left compartment. To remove left top plastic cover: Be very careful after removing screws: Separate slowly out and UP. Avoid breaking plastic flanges. 2 in front edge of left top plastic cover. 2 clips in left top fairing cover bottom: When replacing, add grease to stubs. Remove left top plastic cover. To remove lower plastic cover rear of left cylinder: 1 left black cover rear, below seat, front of tube. 1 above the left cylinder at the back. 1 below the oil filter can be left in. Loosen black lower plastic cover rear of left cylinder. To loosen left plastic cover below gas tank top on left: 1 left in space uncovered below the front centre above the cylinder. Several under the radio control panel, inside. 2 in front of the left panel below the tank. Loosen left cover bellow tank top in order to access tank top left cover. Carefully: Right hand side does not have to be removed, but care should be taken to remove screw and set centre panel free to remove. (Avoid breaking plastic retaining flanges.) Spread side panels of "tank" top each side of the tank gas cover. 2 left of the gas tank cover. 2 right of the gas tank cover. With some care, moving right side panel to right, central plastic cover can now be removed up and towards the front. 4 Around the airbox in front of the gas tank lid. Remove filter cover. Clean everything with damp cloth or paper towels before removing air filter. Remove air filter. Clean edges around air filter seat: Avoid dust, debris or particles entering the air flow compartment. Replace air filter. Replace all in reverse order.

With the old boxer, you could fill up the oil filter before you filled the engine,I(To stop burping)That is air getting in the system. You can no longer do that. And air filter removal is a joke! Why do BMW make it so hard?(Wait until you have to change the fuel filter!!😳🤬
