BMW S54 Vanos Rebuild: Seals + Exhaust Sprocket UPGRADE!

Today, we're rebuilding the Vanos on this S54 motor with brand new seals, and an upgrade exhaust sprocket! Both of these items are commonly due for service on the E46 M3, and more.

Great video still scared to do this myself but so let me get this straight. You can either get the reinforced exhaust sprocket or keep it oem and get the redrilled vanos oil disc. Also I have to do the reinforced cam sprocket bolts as well as the timing chain guide so mine may be more excruciatingly extensive

Why didn't you do the sproket bolts too? They are known to breaking right? The upgraded bolts are torx instead of hex.

Excellent video as usual! You really deserve many more subs than you have so far. But I think there will be more to come if you keep up the great work! I would have to say though a little more of the speed of your machines on display would perhaps help?? Anyway I sure wish this video had been out when I had to do my vanos work. I got it all done but it sure wasn't as clear and shown as to what to do etc as you show. Thank you for all of your videos and hard work! I actually have a swapped 2002 E46 330CI to 2006 E46 M3. The 330 had a bad head gasket and the M3 had been rear ended and written off so swap a lop a loo la! I LOVE that car! Then last year I bought a car I couldn't pass up because it was the deal of a lifetime! 2008 335Xi (I'd much rather have gotten a standard "I" but...) and the guy wanted $1500 BUCKS!! (See). It needed a HPFP and a rear wheel bearing and Varoom! LOL. Of course I then did all the maintenance on it which set me back a chunk of change (As you very well know) but I did all the work myself. Now Tomorrow I'll be getting my new Turbos installed by a great indie shop ("XI" without a lift isn't my idea of a good time lol) so I'm really excited!! As can be seen by the book I've written here. Sorry about that but you know how it can be for those of us bitten by the Bimmer bug. Or should I say "N54 the World!!". Okay that was dumb but I am excited!

Hello, I need your help! I had the vanos unit removed, but both inlet & outlet helical gears still inside the hubs/cams. At this stage, I was turning the engine over to check timing and the inlet helical gear popped out (before this happened I already marked up the helical tooth in relation to inlet hub). However I think I turned the engine over to get the helical gear back in without realising the inlet cam was not turning but the exhaust cam was. Now my inlet camshaft seems to be completely out of time. I am not sure what to do? Will turning the engine over cause the valves to touch pistons if the inlet camshaft timing is way out?

Rocking the cams with the 24mm wrench absolutely necessary? I don't have anything that will fit on the cams, and that's where I'm stuck. I've removed everything, just can't the the vanos unit out far enough to access the gears. Trying to see if I can get away with just prying on it and using a rubber mallet

Nice and clean video. Why not upgrading the anti rattle kit and s62 shims while you have the VANOS open?

So if we open the valve cover and the cams aren't at the top dead center (like, one of them is off by like 10 degrees while the other is straight), that's normal? We just need to twist one of them using the wrench?

Yeah this is something I would like to know as well. I also have got my crank at TDC and cylinder one. The lobes are pointed each other. However, the timing bridge pins do not fall into place. The intake pin is close but not perfect and the exhaust is off by about 10°. From my understanding, it looks like in the video that that maybe normal and that's why after he removes the solenoid pack, he uses the 24 mm wrench to manipulate the exhaust camshaft manually so that he can get the pins to fall in place, but he doesn't really state of that's exactly what he's doing. Videos I've seen people just time the engine at TDC and then as soon as they put the bridge on their pins fall into place and I'm like. Wow that's not happening for me lol

Hi Bimmer barn !!!Great video!!! I can’t make timing .I put a pin to crank shaft and I tried to move camshaft with 24 mm range intake.I can’t move even little bit.Can you tell please way?

Yeah! If you remove the 3 bolts on each plunger cover (see 8:09) it'll release any built up vanos pressure keeping the camshaft locked up. Should be a lot easier to adjust it then! Hope that helps :)
