@@FatboysGarage I named her Phoenix, picked it up not running, 116k miles and had sat still for 3 years outside, spent almost two months working on it before I brought it home from the shop. Going to rod bearing soon as well as full restoration of the interior and a full paint job. It has the SMG, and I love it. I could have bought a clean one, but I couldn't bare to see this car get parted out, so I dug my heels in and am currently trying to decide on a direction to take the car. I've been leaning towards keeping it original with minor upgrades such as Vanos, touch screen radio, SMG and ECU tune, upgraded headlights from 865 retrofit, and maybe a carbon fiber roof down the line. Its alpine white with soon to be black interior. Puts a smile on my face every time I see her in the garage.

I think you can do it while working on the vanos, if you have the cam alignment tool and are ready to adjust the timing afterwards. Also, watch out not to drop the shims (or put some towel to plug the holes), it happend to me twice (fortunately I was able to recover the shims with a magnet!)

lol then you bought the wrong car, prepare for cracked strut towers, blown through shock towers, ripped our RACP panels, and torn subframe mounts. Its literally a car you don't want to own if you aren't willing to do almost everything on it yourself
@FatboysGarage
@FatboysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
@@xpeacemaster You are right about that. Not to mention the VANOS. This car could cost you 15k in damage and maintenance in no time flat lol. Great car has a lot of great qualities. But with the great qualities come lots of work you HAVE to do yourself. Cant be afraid of it, thats what were here for trying to show how. This January comes lots of new videos- including that subframe, brakes, and rod bearings.

@@FatboysGarage I essentially had to rebuild everything except the trans and engine on my e36, still not happy with 25% lock , 95a poly bushing still move a lot. The reaosn why I can't get myself to buy a e46 m3 is people sell them at the point they need rod bearings and RACP reinforcements. I keep debating whether to get another e36, an e46 or a 335i , but I'll probably get another e36 because I can easily fix everything on it myself, and its a great platform to learn how to wrench on
@FatboysGarage
@FatboysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
E36 is a solid choice man. e46 or 36, you're gonna need to rebuild a lot of the car. The solid bushings are the way to go. I thought they would be to stiff, but our track day car has solid all the way around and you know what? It rides better in my opinion than our street car with the Poly's. In January youll be seeing our work on the chassis reinforcement: we are going to extra lengths with a special kit. Let us know which one you decide on bro, we love to see your project

essential piece yes! if they fit loose yes definitely change it, but they are pretty high quality steel and would loose their tension only if the engine got REALLY hot. Its really how it feels to you!

Great video guys! This job looks a little intimidating for the average DIYer. How long should it take for a good mechanic to do this. I inquired how much does it cost at my local shop and he told me around $1000. And if I purchase the shim kit does it come with those tools to check the measurements and also that BMW tool with a little magnet on it or is that a separate purchase? Looking forward to your next video for the rear subframe reinforcement and also the future rod bearing replacement. Keep up the great work much appreciated! 👍🏻

Hi, great video! I just have a quick question. Is the camshaft alignment tool really necessary? My car has been running fine, so I'm assuming the timing is correct. I want to check the valve clearance and adjust if required but wasn't sure if I needed the alignment tool to do this (It's $234!)?

Any tips on old stuck rocker arms? None of mine will move more than maybe a quarter inch when trying to slide them over
@FatboysGarage
@FatboysGarage 4 жыл бұрын
you can consider some seafoam deep creep and spray it into the rocker arms, let it really soak in for a while( days perhaps if necessary). Work them around to get them loosened up from the grime thats in there. You'll want to change your oil after this to ensure no contamination. Let us know how it turns out!

The clearance measurement procedure is not correct. A probe is inserted between the end of the valve and the rocker, but not between the rocker and the back of the cam of the camshaft. The gaps at these points are different. Learn geometry!

what are u refering to?
@michaelric3540
@michaelric3540 4 жыл бұрын
When the guy measures the clearance he slides the feeler gauge between the cam lobe and the rocker face. You are supposed to measure from the top of the shim to the bottom of the rocker.
@hotchkess846
@hotchkess846 3 жыл бұрын
Eh, that’s not correct. According to different sources online, and a write up from ECS tuning on how to perform this procedure, it is to be measured between the rocker arm and the bottom of the cam lobe. NOT between the rocker arm and the valve shim.
