Zach, dude, you’re the man! I have a 99 328i and love driving it when I have time, but it sits in the garage a lot anymore. Last week, the top wouldn’t complete the locking portion to close. I had to manually release to put it back down so I’ll try this. Your videos are excellent. You should be paid, bro!

Thanks for the awesome video that explains how to close and open a convertible top manually. Then how to reset the top so the motor engages and works normally. I probably watched 50 videos on youtube and none of them explained anything close to what you did in your video. Thank you so much for the help.

Thank you for making the video and doing it right! It saved the day to the beach when the tonneau cover wouldn't open. Your video was thorough enough to help me know what I was looking at and understand what caused the problem. The drive rod for the cover popped off because the circ-clip came off. And then, with your video, I was able to resync. Thanks again! (Ed in Houston)

I had a new soft top fitted at a local trim centre even though it looked great when I got it back the roof wouldn't work ! The trim centre disconnected the motors and said I can only use it manually now as it need various parts (£400 worth) I was pissed off as it worked when it went in ! Any I didn't believe them as the parts looked ok so I found this video tried it and guess what all works fine !!! Thanks mate you saved me a lot of money 😀😀

To follow up on this: I posted below that the tonneau cover motor (second one near tail light) on my car came completely out of the hole and wouldn't line up to close it. I couldn't really see what was causing the issue because of the mounting plate that it mounts to being in the way so i figured I'd just take it apart as I could only see 4 bolts holding it in. In doing this I was able to spin it around so I could see why it would not close. It was shifted about 1/4" from the hole and it still wouldn't go in by hand so I disconnected the cables and electrical connector and the couple screws holding the motor to the bracket and removed the motor. I took it into my work bench and laid it on its side so I could grip and squeeze it together, then I smacked it with a hammer while squeezing and it popped right back in. I reinstalled it and followed the rest of the process and now the top opens and closes properly. I took pictures to illustrate and share the steps here but I don't see how to attach or upload them. After I completely installed it again I accidentally hit the release lever and the motor was once again open and wouldn't shut. I thought that maybe I could just pry it a little from the left side and squeeze on the right at the same time and it worked. To prevent this from happening again, I glued a 1/2 thick piece of foam to the back of the motor about a 1/2" or so from the top. and now it works great. I couldn't have done this without this very helpful video. Man, you are a lifesaver to many for sharing!!! Thanks again.

@millertimebmw Thanks Zach. I had to disconnect the cables going from the cover motor to the cover latches. Then the cover opened and I found the towel wedged between the top tension bars. I removed the towel and followed your video to sync the top. It works great now. I couldn't have done it without your video...thanks again.

I encountered the same problem and found the possible problem. I had the same symptom. The motor did not want to go all the way up (there was about a quarter inch of play). The issue was a split washer sitting on top of the motor gear. Make sure it has not come out of its play. It is a force fit. It was offset and was not allowing the motor housing to go all the way up. I used pliers and forced it back to its position and the motor fit nicely. HTH ps - thanks for all these vids Zach!
