An in-depth look at the BMW X5 4.8is, the original high-performance luxury sport utility. Courtesy of Midwest Auto Collection. Presented by Chris Moran.
The 2005 BMW X5 4.8is is one of those vehicles. It rolls on 20s, has a bored-out V8 and a stiffened suspension holding it all up. On paper it's yet another argument that Americans will buy anything with a BMW badge on it, but on the road it's more fun than any SUV has a right to be.
Displacing the Competition
BMW borrowed a page from the Big Three school of high performance by upping the power of the X5 through increased displacement. The bump from 4.4 to 4.8 liters delivers 40 more horsepower and 26 additional pound-feet of torque for totals of 355 and 350, respectively. BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system works with a recalibrated six-speed automatic and a final drive ratio that's actually taller (3.9 vs. 4.1) than in the 4.4i to get the power to the ground.
Throttle tip-in is ultraquick, with the slightest nudge of the pedal resulting in a thump from the exhaust and a not-so-subtle leap forward. Lay into it a little harder and the 4.8 smoothes out and slows up as wind resistance and gravity begin to take their toll on the tall 2.5-ton vehicle.
Its 0-to-60-mph time of 7 seconds and quarter-mile pass of 15.3 seconds make it one fast SUV, but both numbers are slower than those of any serious sport sedan in this BMW's $70K price range.
Convincing Us One Corner at a Time
Getting an SUV to go fast in a straight line is easy. Controlling one around a fast corner is the hard part. The standard X5 is good in this regard, but the 4.8is is better thanks to a sport-tuned air suspension; monster Michelin Diamari tires, sized 275/40 up front and 315/35 in back; and speed-sensitive variable assist steering (the standard system varies according to engine speed).
With all four wheels getting power, ripping through turns requires nothing more than pitching it in, allowing it to take a set and then hammering the throttle down to pull it around. The steering is as precise as that of any BMW sedan, body roll is moderate and the massive tires cling like a high school girlfriend.
The X5 4.8is clocked 62.3 mph through the slalom, a slightly higher speed than the Mercedes-Benz CLS500 sedan we ran the same day. The brakes are touchy, but the big 14-inch rotors stopped the 4.8 from 60 in just 116.1 feet, shorter than the CLS by a foot.
Looking and Feeling the Part
SUVs are purposeful, but rarely pretty. The X5 looks athletic and the 4.8is more so. In addition to big wheels and tires that give it a tough stance, the 4.8 gets titanium-colored grille work, shadowline window trim, extended side sills and a revised rear fascia highlighted by a pair of shadow chrome exhaust tips.
The 4.8is not only looks better, it feels and sounds better, too. Standard upgrades to the interior include eight-way sport seats, a nearly full-length sunroof and a thicker three-spoke steering wheel. There's no iDrive to make things complicated, and the cabin design has the simplicity that made 20th-century BMWs feel just right.
The Alcantara-trimmed seats hold you in snugly without reminding you of every double cheeseburger you downed in the last six months. And speaking of meaty, the extra-thick steering wheel does as much to make the 4.8 feel sporty as any other upgrade on the spec chart. Cargo space is still meager, the CD changer is hard to get to and there's no third-row seat, but if those things are really that important to you, this is not your SUV.

I bought one with 62k miles and added an extended warranty at purchase. After a full transmission rebuild, new torque converter, upgraded transfer case, new fuel pump, new lower oil pan gasket, new pulleys, tensioners, thermostat, belts, and new air suspension, the car runs great. Almost $10,000 of maintenance cost. I don’t regret a single dollar I’ve spent on the car. There’s nothing like it. It has 82k miles on it now and I plan on keeping it for a lot longer.

Had a 2005 4.8is and currently own 2013 X5M, both quality SAVs for it's time. If I had to make a comparison, 2005 4.8is had a very exciting sound with standard equipment and extremely quick. 2013 X5M, extremely pricey with better ride quality.

I live in the U.S. but I own a BMW x5 2005 3.0 Diesel in Poland. I nicknamed it TANK and sometimes I call it The Beast. When the car is in park mode, the engine sounds something like an American diesel ambulance or one of them big diesel pick up trucks mostly used by the cities; fire marshals drive those trucks in NYC. The roar of the engine while driving is fantastic and makes you feel tremendous power. While in the car, the diesel engine is actually not that loud compared to a diesel sedan. The engine is very audible while driving, especially at speeds over 140kph (85mph). Overdrive mode changes the sound of the engine and gives you nice acceleration. Wind resistance is very loud at high speeds, but if you live in America you don't have to worry about it because of the speed limits; sure, Poland has speed limits: 50kph (31mph) in cities, towns and villages (build-up areas) and 120kph (74mph) on open roads/highways. I and many other drivers like to get on the fast lane and go as fast as possible; usually 200kph (124mph). Poles most of the time don't obey speed limits; instead they drive responsibly but accidents due happen. When I think about having an accident, I feel so bad for the other driver and his car; because most cars in Poland are small or medium sized European cars. I only fear trucks in a head on collision. I had one accident where I hit a very small car directly on its side at 40mph. I did not even feel the impact and I was happy to see that only the bumper got off set a bit by the collision and that only unimportant plastics broke off. The other guy wasn't so lucky; his car had to be towed away; its front tire was bend, there were fluids coming out from the bottom and it was steaming like a steam train. If he came out 4 ft more, I would hit em' directly in the driver's side door, and it would have been a deadly accident. In Poland you get a fine for causing an accident and since he took the blame, he also got hit with a ticket on the spot.

I made the mistake of buying a used BMW... wont ever do it again it drove well but kept needing repairs... it was a 525i classic and all black...great looking car. My neighbor bought an X5 and it was a hot little thing... I always wondered why he never seemed to drive it much and eventually after a while he sold it and got a Lexus ( just like I was driving... ) I asked him about it and he said the car couldn't stop breaking every time you got into one... he liked my car and researched the lexus brand.... Two new Lexus fans for life.. I always wondered why BMW does not make better lasting cars and can only conclude that they dont want to because they rely on new cars and repairs to maximize profits. Lexus relies on making good cars and customer satisfaction.

BMWs can be great cars if they are properly maintained and have not had any accidents. They are also like planes, they need to be driven regularly to be healthy. That's how they build them...and in my driveway? I own a Lexus...far and away the most dependable and refined cars you can buy. Not the most athletic or sporty, but a great daily driver.

Not all models go bad. I have a 2005 BMW x5 3.0 Diesel and this make and year is one if not the best models made, anything after 2006 I would worry about. Mine has almost 200,000 kilometers and no problems. But if I do get a problem it will cost me a lot of money; this is a rich man's car, a car that I could never afford new, it sold for $100,000 in 2005. I own this car in Poland but I live in NYC. There's no point of owning such a car in America, because of the speed limits; in Poland I drive at 200kph (124mph) but in the U.S. I would never be able to go that fast. This car burns fuel or diesel like a tank; it's much cheaper to buy a big pick up truck if you want to feel big and safe on the roads. But some people still want to experience driving a BMW, the ultimate driving machine.
