I see that so often and say to myself "that guy is driving a lesson learned" . I shake my head when I see a beat up old car with new wheels on the side of the road as that money could have kept that car going for another year or more, but with a BMW they "got a deal" and spent the rest on wheels ignoring or not knowing of the repair relationship with the wallet that is more than mandatory!

Yeah, I've owned 3 x5s. Loved all three, really safe cars in high altitude snow country, and traded them all in at 100k. No issues at all. None. I maintained them. I took care of them. Totally reliable. The car you featured showed all the signs of being ridden hard and put away wet too many times. Abused (by the previous owner and then by you.) But let me be clear. Having driven the BMW X5 for over 300k miles over the past 15 years, they are amongst the best cars I've ever driven or owned. But we all know they are expensive to repair.

As a x5 owner, these cars are not for the faint of heart. If you have BMW software like dis,inpa and sss it’s not terrible. But a lot of really bad parts/design. The window regulator clips are a total joke, the nav lcd screen always fails, typical passenger occupancy sensor failure… my favorite is the heating pads in the seat that create hot spots that burn holes in the seat/burn you. That was a nice touch

While this was a funny episode, I think it really comes down to how the previous owners maintained them. A major issue in the U.S is people simply don't keep up with the maintenance on their cars. Especially once these luxury vehicles start hitting their 3rd owners+, these owners bought the car for cheap, and didn't bother to replace or service anything that needed attention. Of course there are certainly issues with these BMWs in the mid-2000s, but how good or bad the car will be currently is all dependent on its previous history.

Naah they suck if you compare to lets say a toyota. That will start everytime even with bad service.
@aidenp5768
@aidenp5768 3 жыл бұрын
Danny Moreno Toyota’s start even with bad service is they are more simple damn cars. If you really really into vehicles and love your car you know. A Toyota doesn’t have thick oils, they are much simpler cars, they don’t have so much power so the parts don’t have to be so complicated. Even a Supra, Supras can’t have 1000HP without upgrading parts, the diffs, trans, oils have to be upgraded to withstand that power. BMWs mostly have ridiculous power and torque and in order for the car to handle that it needs complex parts and when the part is bad the car shuts off or gets in limp mode so it doesn’t kill itself even more. It’s bad maintenance not the car. Keep up with the car and if you can’t don’t blame the car blame yourself. This maintenance concepts applies to any BMW, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, Ferrari, Lamborghini, AM, Range Rover, Rolls Royce, Dodge V8s / V10s, Chevy Performance cars, Ford performance cars and even Lexus cars need to obey this concept that these noobs don’t get when you buy higher end vehicles.

After that, I all but gave it away. It left me stranded and with all of my car knowledge, I couldn't even begin to figure it out. I lost roughly $3000 in about a week, to get it out of my sight. This was not the biggest mistake of my life, but it is certainly the one I kick myself over the most.

I own a 2004 X5 3.0i with 180k miles. It is solid. The sun roof still works...almost everything still works minus a few things. I don’t drive like this guy. Sure a fuse is out that makes the signal on one side flash double speed. My check tire pressure light is on (so what it’s just a sensor), and a internal door handle mechanism but everything else works. Sure the gray seats need be sanded and recolored link how to below). But it is 16 years old. My internal drivers door handle mechanism also did what this video passenger side handle did. Minor fix (parts on Amazon). I replaced the front brakes pads and rotors for $450 (parts & labor...again from FCP Euro and hired a guy from a shop and it’s a easy job he did off work). Just change the oil with synthetic weight as the manual recommends. Sure the axl boots tear, mine did too, but again I baby it how I drive and am still rolling fine. I’ve had no engine or transmission problems. Just the internal door mechanism (again easy fix), I changed the front brake pads and rotors, and replaced the battery since it was old (those are big and $160) but am now getting good use of mine. I don’t floor it and drive it hard like I bet this person does. I drive it so it lasts. I love the sun roof and back built in window shades which keep the sun off my 3 year old. It’s a beater that is working for me! And I don’t give a shit if someone bumps it or whatever. The freedom from stress is amazing because I once had a nice tricked out powder coated low profile rims car. Bunch of F ing stress protecting it. If you don’t have people giving you nice cars for completing high school that you trash and then call junk then maybe go earn the $ and pay for it yourself and then maybe you will appreciate a cheap car that does well if you do some basics. But hey my parents were just blue collars. I was a victim of a 2005 BMW X3. I was in my early 20s looking for my first nicer vehicle. Besides minor issues such as tearing intake boots and valve cover gasket rotting, the steering angle sensor became permanently on and the transfer case / AWD system malfunctioned and was unfixable by anyone I brought it to. I put a new transfer case on it and it still was screwed somehow. The engine was ok 3.0 M54, did have misfire issues with coils and plugs needing replaced, burned a quart of oil a month, but constant problems that even seasoned metro specialists couldnt solve. Burned through way more money than I paid for it trying to fix it. Ended up cutting my losses and moved on!

Lots of window regulators, door handles, etc. But nothing that would make me get rid of it. About to do $2500 more to it to make it like new and drve it until it dies! I have owned 3 BMWs and I've come to the conclusion that buying, owning and driving a BMW is like dating a wild smoking hot yet crazy as hell woman. At first, it is pure joy and excitement and you feel it is worth everything you put into it. You tell your friends who warned you against falling for her they were wrong, she is delightful and brings you so much happiness and she is different than before. Then, there are a few minor issues that you rationalize as part of the price of being able to enjoy this wild, beautiful, exciting, fun to handle thing. Finally, the never ending horrifically expensive, non stop problems and issues drive you to the point of being willing to do almost anything to get away from the madness. Even the massive financial hit you take when you get rid of it is made more than bearable by the knowledge you are free from the clutches of the evil beast.

Ya I've heard german cars are the best to drive but turn into Satan when they start to have issues. Best to research reliable models and learn to work on the car/find someone cheap to fix it. You'd have to be rich to afford paying the BMW dealer to fix everything, some are easier than others i've heard. But if you don't want to deal with that it's best to lease or just keep changing cars after the warranty expires.

I bought a 06 x5 4.4 with 200,000km that was then daily driven all year for around two years. Three door handles broke, one window stopped working, sunroof started getting stuck, started getting a loud humming noise when above 40 kph, water pump and belt broke while driving, then the last 6 months I started getting a random air suspension fault message on the dash and blue smoke out the tail pipes if it sat for a few days. But from beginning to end it always drove smooth and was a fun to drive. It had 4 owners before me, Canadian car from Ontario, no service history, paid $3400. Only had a couple minor issues when I got it.

I bought a 2003 X5 with the 4.4 back in 2018. I paid $2.4K for it with a possible bad transmission. It was in fact toasted, so I had it rebuilt by a well known shop in the S.F. Bay Area for $4.7K. I've had a variety of stuff go wrong with it since owning it, most of which I've been able to fix myself. Outside of stuff that requires 'coding', which I'm hesitant to try on my own, it's pretty easy to work on. One item I took note of in particular were the air bags. Arnott makes replacements that are regarded as being better than the originals and cost $200.00/pair. They are amazingly easy to change; I just did mine for preventative maintenance. There are some upgraded aftermarket parts available for some things, like the plastic clips on the window regulators, and some simple mods to improve other items, like the door handle carriers. But if there's ONE THING you really want to get in front of on these, it's the timing chain guides on the M62TU engines, like I have in my '03. When the pandemic hit and all the shops were doing all they could to get business, I had mine done, along with a bunch of other stuff on the engine. The timing chain guides are one item that if they even start to go bad, the engine can grenade pretty quickly. It's not like the valve guide seal issue on the later engines where it just runs bad. Broken timing chain guide pieces on the M62TU can clog the oil pump pickup and starve the engine of oil, destroying it. Or, if the pieces are small enough, get into the oiling system and destroying it at the component level. Either way, it's something you want to do every 100K miles. Do I like this car? For an SUV it's ok. Definitely better than anything else out there as far looks go. But mechanically I think the Mercedes ML series of the same era has to be better, though they're kinda fugly.

I drove it to 190k miles and it never had any problems other than a few pixels going dead in the dash, and then there was some sort of resistor in the blower fan that they had to fix and that cost some. And the sunroof stopped opening. Other than that I just had the BMW dealer do the prescribed maintenance. It wasn't terribly expensive. But it didn't have a V8 or air suspension or any of that stuff as in the did. I think that era of X5s was one of the best designs -- it was just the right size and drove great.

@@SuperInfamous1234 sine I live in the UK and they was everywhere at one time till people wise up and sold them or scrap them. Yes I have driven one. Manual gearbox is better and the auto was really bad. Hardly any traction on the rear end as being rear wheel drives but unbalanced car.

I bought a cheap 2004 no reserve X5 3.0 on Ebay with a view to doing it up. It cost me £2335 via the Ebay auction. I have spent £4,500 on getting all the fixes done and now it looks and drives like a dream. I have had all the wheels powder coated in gun metal grey. The interior and seats were in very good condition which really helped when I bought it. So it can work out when you buy an old X5 but you have to have the cash to do the fixes and you have to think the worst. I think I have got fairly lucky.

After several years of first gen X5 ownership, I have found one small good thing to say. The rear airbag replacement, while I assumed would be life altering like the brake booster was, was actually a mostly pleasant experience, 8/10 would recommend. It can be done beside the highway with a 90 degree pick and a pair of needle nose pliers alone. The excellent ride of a well maintained X5 comes at a cost, just know that when you buy it, and stay on top of it.

I have a 20 yr old 4.4 x5 m62, just did the timing chain and guides and all the gaskets and rebuilt the VANOS. Cost $1k-$2k for all that, but half the cost was expensive timing tools...it's in great shape for a 20 yr old car. No leaks after redoing the gaskets.

I've seen a few of the "this is how much I really make from KZfaq" videos. If they're to be believed, with over 1m subscribers, regular family-friendly videos in the automotive category... Hoovie is likely making in excess of $1m per year just from ad revenue. He also does sponsorships, which bumps that up considerably. So a $1,000 purchase on a throwaway car which can have the mirrors yanked off and the cats chopped out to make a cool video, is not unreasonable

My dad had one of these technically still does because its a lawn ornament now. After he lost his license i drove it for a year in my last 2 semesters in college. I knew it wouldn't last so i had a blast with it every chance i got. The power steering stopped working after 2 months so i just drove it like that. It was actually pretty reliable for the most part. and driving it almost every day kept the battery charged since it had a voltage leak. After 8 months the fuel pump died so i replaced it for $600. After 11 months the ABS system failed so i disconnected it. Finally after 12 months the air suspension in the back collapsed. The ride was so horrible an my alignment started to get messed up. I finally bought my first car with my own money a Subaru 2 weeks later. While it was definitely a money pit i loved ever minute with that car. The handling was always so direct and fun to throw into corners. The V8 would growl and sigh like a real beast. The leather seats were comfy but firm enough. The heated seats were a godsend on cold winter days. The 4wd could pull it through anything. The doors were so solid it was like driving a bank vault. Definitely an unforgettable experience im constantly reminded by everytime i get home an see it still in the yard.
