I’m new to BMW ownership - about a month. That being said my owners manual says I can jump start the car using the starting aid terminals under the hood. They even call them “starting aid terminals”. It says to switch off all electronics in both cars and connect cables with both cars off in the proper order, then follow next steps, etc. It does say to strictly adhere to the procedure or risk damage to vehicles or persons. Maybe people aren’t adhering to the procedure and damaging their cars, but if I need a jump and don’t have the portable jump starter, I don’t see why to not jump start the car using the written procedure in the manual. I do think that the portable jump starter is probably a good idea though. Interestingly enough, it doesn’t say anything about using a portable jump starter in the manual. Loving the car so far.

My previous car, an audi had the same setup. I never had to jump start it thank god because despite all the tinkering I did changing air filters etc, I didn't see there were terminals under the bonnet! Only found out by googling it now. I had this car 4 years. I'm just glad I never left the lights on overnight! Great advice, it should be included in the quick reference manual too. The F20 I took ownership of a couple of weeks ago also has this layout. Thanks for the advice!

I am a female who prides herself on researching, learning, and quite a few minor repairs. Just realizing now I'm not as smart as I thought I was. I am on my 5th BMW and I can honestly say probably my last. I have a 2008 535i , beautiful car, rides great but it's just one thing after another, I can afford to buy one but not always afford to get it fixed. Thank you so so much for the battery information, never have I thought to look up how to charge the battery cuz I just figured you charge it like any other car and boy was I wrong. Once again very very helpful I guess I'll have to go out and buy one of the chargers and try to get my car started I'll let you know how it goes once again thank you so much. Signing off, Annemarie from Florida

I have a 2010 535i and love the car. Unfortunately it's my first and I got it 6 months ago. It stalled out on me again today. This time it left me stranded in a busy highway. I was terrified. So it's been towed and at the mechanics twice in 6 months. It's so expensive for repair work. It's hard to attempt any preventative maintenance.

I had an 08 535i in Florida as well. Amazing car but the n54 is notorious for being unreliable. Don’t give up on bmw. The newer models are way more reliable. I drive a 18 540xi now with the b58. Even tuned the car feels like it’s holding back. Super reliable engines.

Well they can be sensitive jump starting. Rule is, only jump a slightly soft battery maybe but never jump a flat battery, allow some time for some charge to build up in the BMW battery first ;). I think the main problems can occur when jumping a very dead/flat battery, when the BMWs battery voltage suddenly sags whilst cranking the engine over and the other jump cars alternator and the BMWs alternator can spike above 15v widely trying to compensate the load, coupled with the cars voltage regulation strategy, which can cause over voltage spikes to damage modules. Superior engineering or guaranteed dealer network income?
@IH6848
@IH6848 3 жыл бұрын
A lot of modern cars with start stop systems and intelligent charge systems have alternators capable of putting out a lot more voltage and amperage than an older conventional system where the alternator regulator will maintain around 14 volts max these systems can output a lot more voltage dependant on demand. So if you have to use another vehicles battery on the terminals and you don't have a jump pack, do not start the engine. Not only BMW but some Vauxhalls as well can be seriously damaged by jumping direct to battery, some have the jump terminals despite the battery being in the engine compartment under a cover.

Jumping from under the hood with jumper cables is fine, it even explains it in the manual how to. I would suggest to connect all 4 cables with both cars off and then just try and start to dead one. If still not enough, then start the good car and then try the bad one again.

Brilliant. I have a BMW 118d M-Sport and I didn't use it for 3 months. When I tried starting it I had a flat battery. Inadvertently, I attached my battery charger directly to the battery terminals in the boot. All I got when trying to start the car was a load of clicking noises and error messages on the dash. So I found your video then went to Halfords and bought one of these Lithium Jump Starters and followed your instructions. Car started first time! Luckily I didn't fry the car all the faults cleared and the car is running sweet. Thank you!

i have owned bmws since 1995, series 7, 3, 5, and x5 resently i drive a 2017 x5 is very nice, back in the days i used to work on them a lot but now since technology is so advanced all i do is oil change and breaks, right now my x5 battery i believe started acting out but i am not sure that is the issue, today i was very close to jump start it with my portable jumpper, but some how i did not and waited and when i tried, started right up but i very lazy and the gauge needles went up and down and then dropped and then went up staying on normal iddle possition, tomorrow i wil drive to bmw dealer i hope they dont rip me off, for all that saying i just want to thank you so much for such valuble tutorial because after so many years owned these cars did not know that would coause so much damages to modules, thank you for such a good info and taking your time to go down in details, you safe my wallet from drowning and save my money, i was very close to make the problem bigger, god bless you--

On my e46 it seems everytime i work on my car & keep the doors open for periods of time my battery dies. I have jumped my car from a charger before & could tell my modules didnt like it & was fortunate not to have any blown or defective cause of doing a boost. So I usually remove both top post terminal connections & charge my battery this way till Im @ 12v to under 13v. I do have a question though if u would BMW doctor, i read somewhere on my Owner's manual that the car is supposed to sense how much power is left in my battery & if it senses that the battery is about to die , its supposed to make sure & leave the battery w/ enough juice to crank the car one last time before it dies. Any idea why this isnt happening or is this a false statement from BMW? Thanks. Nelson

hi BMW Doctor, I need some help from you. I have a E65 730d M57 engine with 218cv, all stock from 1 or 2 months ago I fell a slightly shacking from the engine when idle and with the engine cold. no misfires, no lack of power, nothing, only a small shacking and only with the engine cold. times to times I have a smooth running controller fault, and I suppose is all related with some faulty injector, so I did a test with INPA and ISTA. got this results: INPA selective mass adjustment (mg/hub): cylinder 1: 0.16, cylinder 2: 0.70, cylinder 3: -2.09, cylinder 4: -0.28, cylinder 5: -0.40, cylinder 6: 1.93 ISTA D correction injection quantities from smooth running regulator in (mg/stroke): cylinder 1: 0.3, cylinder 2: 1.1, cylinder 3: -2.5, cylinder 4: -0.1, cylinder 5: -1.0, cylinder 6: 2.2 ISTA D minimum/maximum correction fuel injection rates from the operational smoothness regulator in (mg/hub): cylinder 1: 0,0 | 0.6, cylinder 2: 0.0 | 1.2, cylinder 3: -3.1 | 0.0, cylinder 4: -0.6 | 0.2, cylinder 5: -1.0 | 0.0, cylinder 6: 0.0 | 2.2 I guess the problem is the injector 6, but I´m not sure if this is the case or any other injector or more than one, also some people say when replacing one injector we need to replace all injectors, I don't see the point replacing all if there's only one or two faulty. can you help me sir? any hints will be much appreciated, please. my best regards and thank you so much

BMW and other manufacturers put batteries in the boot/trunk for several reasons. 1 Weight distribution 2 Cooler away from the engine (and batteries don't like excess heat or cold) 3 Packaging - on the bigger engines there just isn't space under the bonnet Does no one read a car manual these days. The manuals tell owners to charge from the terminals under the bonnet/hood Explanation - so that the PCM and IBS know what is going on and to avoid voltage spikes. Perhaps people need telling I guess. Better to spend £50 -£150 on a Suaoki or NOCO than risk frying something. PS Dean you need to replace the O ring seal on your CHF reservoir.

That currently makes literally no sense to me from an electrical engineering point of view. I can’t see how the car will see any difference between one battery or two in parallel even if one is discharged. Possibly the 14.5V of a running car might over voltage the starting systems that would normally only see very low volts whilst the starter is cranking. Very odd. I always understood that the battery was in the rear merely to assist with weight distribution. I must go and look at the circuit diagrams. Definitely agree about the jumper packs with the smart connection monitor though. Getting the polarity wrong when jumping is definitely catastrophic and often ends in a battery explosion raining acid everywhere.

Old BMW's don't seem to care. Most bmw's also have batteries that last like 10 years too, because they are big and trunk mounted. The e60 shown here has notoriously dodgy electrical systems. They also were the first bmw's with lead free solder and computers in the trunk that tend to get wet. Don't get an e60, so many electrical gremlins.

So that’s a cool video, but if the jumper I have doesn’t work maybe because it’s a poor jumper or bad battery how to you replace battery if you can get the trunk open. )2016 bmwz4 e89)?

BMWs have had the battery in the boot or under the back seat since the '80s with corresponding terminals in the engine bay to start the car from a booster pack or another car. First thing to do when jump starting ANY car is check the Owners Handbook. It will tell you how to jump start the car (if it can be jump started). BMWs are not particularly sensitive to being jump started (no more than any modern car) but they do have to be jump started in the right way

Where should you charge your car battery from? The battery? Due to covid I’ve only driven 300 miles this year. Many thanks.

Do you connect your smart charger to the battery directly or to the jump terminals?

Hi doc, im looking to get a battery booster for my 140i but im worried the cables wont be long enough to reach the two points. Do you know if they are long enough to reach both positive and negative points? The cables all seem to be the same length

Place red on positive and black on any ground of the car. There should be a bolt on the engine close by anywhere on the vehicle

Well I’m late to seeing this and I jump started 2017 330i from the battery the old fashioned way. And nothing is damaged that I know of. Fingers crossed. But I bought the instrument in the video for future charges.

I have a 2016 Mini Countryman S that uses the same IBS as most BMWs . I was proactively using a battery tester to test the condition of my MINI/BMW battery with 760CCA as I just bought this tester and wanted to test all my vehicles . I have no starting issues at all but after the test it showed battery voltage at 12.03v after sitting over night and with the system NOT "asleep". I tested at the battery itself. The tester showed GOOD- RECHARGE. So i went on an hour ride at highways speeds. Tested the battery again the next morning and it showed 11.99v - GOOD RECHARGE. Should I be testing at those JUMP locations in the MINI? Does MINI/BMW systems alter these test results? seems odd.

You can measure the battery voltage under the hood or in the trunk, the IBS isn’t in between either of these circuits. With the car running measure the voltage and make sure the alternator is working, but otherwise, 12.0v is 50% charged and if it won’t charge beyond 50% the battery is likely sulfated. Time to replace it.

Ya these boosters look great. Should pick up one for my E90 and Porsche 958. Have a lead acid one, but really big.
