Edit* BMX Stem rise is actually measured from the bottom of the stem to the center of clamping area.
BMX stem geometry appears quite simple at first glance, and for all practical applications of stem geometry, it is as simple as it seems.
However, there is more than meets the eye and a lot to talk about in regards to BMX stems and their geometry.
Hopefully this video can help you make an educated decision the next time you’re in the market for a new stem!
Thank you for choosing to spend your time watching one of my videos!

Dude you’re like a BMX scientist... and with a natural born teaching ability that’s miles ahead of the other youtubers who let their online personality get in the way of the information. In the 80s we literally hammered thin metal slivers into our seat clamps and secured loose and stripped brakes to the frame with wire before each ride, the session lasted as long as the wire did haha! Pedals back then had cotter pins in them, if it took too many hits you’d end up with a slightly floppy pedal on one side .... (its no wonder I was so shit) - things have come a long way.

longer stem = more stability but slower barspins/whips. harder to get into nose mannies but easier to hold em, shorter stem = more twitchy but faster barspins/whips, easier to get into nose mannies but bit harder to hold

If you know the reach and rise of a stem, you can use the Pythagorean theorem to calculate the extension. (Reach x Reach) + (Rise x Rise) = (Extension x Extension)
@yvandupapier
@yvandupapier 5 жыл бұрын
It would have been great to say that having a stem with a recessed cut out increase the rise of the stem, cause it will need and additional spacer to keep it to the same : (ex : fiend morrow V1 vs V2)

also worth noting make sure your fork compression cap clears the recessed out area, my buddy had an issue where he had to file his down a lil to get it to fit.

Also, I often hear that people would either change they bars for a 0.25" lower, or switch to a frond load. But they don't realise how lower a front load stem will keep their bars compare to a 0.25" lower bars. There might be more than 1" of difference. Anyway, I love frontload stem.

Hey man, great video, but I have one question - You say that the rise of the stem is measured from the center of the steering bore to the center of the handlebar clamp, in a different video a guy said to measure the rise starting from the Very bottom of the steering bore of the stem. This has confused me a lot, because using your method here my Front load stem rise will end up in the negatives, but measured from the very bottom of the steering bore of the stem it will be about 7mm, which is what sourcebmx is telling me the rise of my stem is. So I'm just curious if you could inform me on which is the correct way or whatever is going on here. Thanks heaps
@Brant_Moore
@Brant_Moore 4 жыл бұрын
Apparently my video is incorrect. Looking into things, the resources I used for that piece of information were incorrect as well. All bmx stems I can see appear to be measured from bottom of stem to center of handlebar clamp. I can’t believe it took this long to figure it out
@Brant_Moore
@Brant_Moore 4 жыл бұрын
The weird thing is that it appears some stems are measured the way outlined in this video. How confusing. Practically though, there’s no reason to need to measure for yourself and not trust the info bmx companies are giving unless there is zero spec information from them

I changed my stem with a new one, how come my headset became loose? now it has a little play when i brake the front caliper. should i add a spacer? or add more millimeter coz i noticed that the stack height of the new stem is different from my old one.

If the stack height is lower on the new one it could be your problem. If that is the case, another spacer should help
