BNSF Railroad uses locomotives to clear log jam from bridge Puyallup, WA

After spending all day trying to remove a large log jam that has been building up all morning. The BNSF railroad resorts to locomotives to try to clear the log jam in front of the old bridge. The overflowing Puyallup river was twice the size it normally was due to flooding. Filmed in December, 2008.

We've parked LOADED Ballast trains on bridges to hold them down during floods. Also, we literally PULLED a curved Steel Truss girder RR Bridge over to one side with huge cables to allow a HI/WIDE load to squeak thru. and NO, you don't reuse a tow strap after it's been 'compromised'. Railroader for 34/yrs.... just sayin'.

This is an awesome video I grew up along the Puyallup river and remember this flood very well. Every 4-6 years we used to get a good one. In flooded this last year and I haven't seen it so hith since the 90's

When they made the bridge in the first place, they should of made the stilts angled, so nothing would ever have the chance of getting tangled up

I love "that moment when", they all realize they didn't think this all the way through. The, "now what are we gonna do" realization. Considering that was not a rope but a VERY expensive tow/tie down-style strap they had to lose.

The released log was working against the bridge deck as it was held before tge strap was cut Pass the line under the bridge then up to the loco so the whole works goes downstream then cut one leg of the line at the loco so the line pulls through, recovered to avoid a hang up futher down stream, and use again

They would have had a better angle and risked less damage to the bridge if they'd run the lines along the outside of the bridge with the locos pulling from on shore. It would have been more of a straight pull than having the lines pulling the logs in toward the bridge.

Cut one strap at the loco - the log will pull away and leave a long strap approx 2 ft shorter than before. Use your noggins guys!

It looked exactly like the set up for one of those fail videos. You know, when they tie the rope to the truck frame and the next thing engine is flying through the hood? I was waiting for that middle stanchion to crumble, and then the bridge, train, and workermen to all slide into the river. Oh well. I guess the “No worries, my brother owns the rope company” crew will live to look dumb another day.

So one log was removed and most of a rope was lost because they stupidly cut through both parts of the rope loop. They still had most of the pile-up to remove.

Had they obtained a longer rope or nylon webbing, they could have run it to the end of the bridge truss before tying it to the locomotive. It might have done a better job of breaking up the log pile and they could have kept their line for another attempt, if needed.

It's not attached, only looped around it. But cutting it, there is now only one long strand of rope being tugged along with the log very loosely.

What a gormless and ill thought out method. The strop could have been positioned further to the left to give a cleaner pull. It should then have been hooked by one of the bystanders to avoid it being snagged as the log cleared. But, why then cut off the entire loop when all that was needed was to cut one side. You would still have a strop albeit slightly shorter.

The riggers need to not get so close to the strap/rope because it snapping could cut them in half. I have seen an aircraft carrier mooring line cut a 6 inch thick armored hatch in half. (fortunately everyone was well clear of that one)

hay googleminus, you want to be the suicide climbing down there to cut the logs? have to get it off the pier as the force and change of the flow can under cut the footings. sure a "pre" pile would be good, but this was a large flood for that area. maybe they installed one after the flood. if the epa, sierra club, peta, etc. would allow it.

IF, my initials were DJT... one of my very first "acts" as POTUS would have been -by EO- to immediately and completely De-fund the EPA, HS, Et - El.... and find a way to "illegalize" the other aforementioned groups(plus others) that you mentioned and drain the swamp completely..... not to mention forcing (by EO) Congress back to April 1933 (under FDR) and recind the illegally voted into place "War Powers Measures Act" which effectively "shelved" the Constitution and giving the POTUS basically unchecked powers, and opening the doors wide open for the Military Industrial Powers to initiate and continue all these bogus "wars" all over the planet.... well, actually, I would save that for last, as doing so would null & void my ability to "write" EO's.

Shane's Trains57..... yes, lots of yard/locals still in the pre-merger colors... and it's likely that some or many of them will never wear the BNSF colors... depending on where they sit on the list for trade-off or sale to motive power suppliers, either that or whenever they get sent back to either Topeka, or to Relco in Albia, IA. for full rebuild... then they would go to the paint shop for the new colors before coming back online with BNSF.

No, there was no good way for anyone to get down there safely with all the water. I stuck around for a while after they moved the log and they didn't do anything worth filming.

It isn't the horsepower, it's the tractive effort a locomotive produces. In this case, just one AC44 or ES44AC would've pulled the whole mess out without a fuss.

Was there no thought of flipping the line up off the tree when slack was acquired as it passed under the bridge? And who succeeded in attaching the line to that tree in the jam in the first place?.....misleading description, as the "jam" was not cleared.

did not have longer "rope" ? ... it could potentially damaged the construction of the bridge here....should use longer cable and in way that does not touch the bridge at all ...from the very side of the bridge

Looks like a good way to damage the bridge. Having the cable between the engine and the tree press against the bridge support in a way that the bridge support was never intended to take force could damage it.

That was a rope, not a cable. Probably nylon or polypropylene, which is they could cut it with a chainsaw. And bridge designs take lateral loads into account, from wind, and probably water too, here

it would have been fine........................ trees cannot create enough pull force to dislodge the locos. also the bridge girders act as pivots for the rope and will take the most force of any debris floating away. you clearly failed basic physics

Good thing the truck wasn't able to dislodge the log. With the force of that water, it certainly would have been pulled off the rails if not into the river.

I thought 3 locos was a bit of overkill. I was expecting to see one decent loco turn up. now they have to attach another rope to the rest of that mess piled up there . dangerous for anyone to be out there .
