Great commentary! Just an FYI he is not actually alone. He didn’t actually spend the pandemic in that room. That’s a guest house in his back yard. He has a longtime girlfriend who is a successful director. And they have a dog. But he’s a performer. And I’m sure he actually did have many of the feelings and experiences that he acts out in this special but this is a performance. I doubt if there’s not much of this entire special that wasn’t scripted out. It’s still a genius piece of art and comedy but it is not a documentary piece.

I was born in 1990 and the line "i used to be the young one. got used to meeting people who weren't used to meeting someone who was born in 1990--no way!" hit me especially hard. i used to hear that all the time. like no way, you are so young--1990?! wow. ...yeah that comment really doesn't happen any more. lol

His aside about suicide after this is important context to the final line of the song.

So often when I watch a reaction channel, I'll skip what they say when they pause or just swipe the video away when they're done watching it. You're one of the only people I've found that really adds something to the content they react to, rather than just be a smiling face. Problematic and Turning 30 are the perfect pair of songs for the elder millennial. In Problematic, we see Bo reckoning with his younger self and the comedy he made then. Wishing he can outgrow his young self. In Turning 30, he looks back at the young "prodigy" he was and how new it all was. And wishing he could have stayed in that moment. The duality of getting older. Running away from the person we once were, while being apprehensive of the future that awaits us.

Honestly man, I totally agree. I'm 33 and my 20s sucked. I was financially fucked over from college and graduating at the start of the recession. My 30s have been phenomenal in comparison.

Yeah, I get being 30 is not supposed to make one feel old but in Bo's case success came very early after unintentionally going viral on KZfaq as he was the youngest person to land a Comedy Central special (at 18, I think 🤔) so, as he said, he was always "the young one" among his peers… Plus he's been living under the spotlight for half of his life now… Oh, besides being a comedian, actor, producer and director he's also a poet (having published a book - Egghead)!😉 You might be onto something about him possibly (secretly) wanting children and actually being envious of his "stupid friends": there's a Portuguese saying that roughly translates to "Who disdains wants to buy."🤔😉

If you don't have children but your friends become parents, their friendship with you changes as their responsibilities and interests have shifted. They can't do as much with you or maybe stay out as long as they used to. Also, sometimes you get bored and annoyed listening to how much they talk about their kids.

I'm a few years past 30, only 5 years past, but this song still relates, now that all of my friends are having kids and getting married and i'm looking at the world going "why?"

This song is so relatable because I feel like I'm not moving from when I was some years ago. But I don't really think that figuring out what you want to do has something to do with your age. There's nothing bad with choosing a career when you're 18, I personally chose mine at 17 and realized that I didn't really like it at 23, saved some money after working in what I studied and now I'm 26 and I'm studying again. I think that you can change what you want to do at any time. My mom is a great example of that, she used to be a hairdresser, then she became an informatic and now she's in her 50's and is studing law. Choosing something when you are young doesn't mean that you are going to keep doing it for the rest of your life because life is not like that anymore.

I had my first existential crisis when I hit 30. For like a year I was crazy depressed and I’d lay in bed at night and couldn’t stop thinking of the fact I was going to die someday. It was wild. I’m 47 now, but I relate to this song so hard.

I turned 30 about a week before him, in quarantine. I FELT this song haha. Two things to note: The awesome "backing dancers". And also I laughed so hard at the "stupid friends are having stupid children". I'm definitely not jealous, I'm pretty sure I don't want kids. But I am kinda sick of my social media suddenly getting full of friends kids like they are thing it's what they should be doing, and it's changing everything, dynamics, making them much more boring as friends because they have new focus. It's a tongue in cheek way to complain about how annoying it is when all your friends drop off the radar and post incessantly about their kids (like in Welcome to the Internet where he says "show us pictures if your children tell us every thought you think"). He talks a lot about climate change, and the single worst thing you can do for your carbon footprint is having a kid. One last thing: the bit where you paused is addressing the "killing himself" thing. AND he did an interview where he says he's not depressed, he's not doing anything silly. It's the people who seen fine and DON'T talk about this stuff you should worry about.

I like how he got concerned at the fact he said he would off himself at 40, but then cuts the video off right before he says he doesn't actually wanna off himself lol. I understand why since it's no longer part of the song it's extra footage from inside. But it always works out that way and it's so funny

This song makes me feel depressed cuz I’m 27 now and I’m finishing up my associate’s degree in a field I’m not even sure I want to go in, but I’m so close to finishing it, so I’m feeling almost forced to just finish, and I don’t even know if I’ll even be able to find a job once I’m done with school this winter

Not trying to promote anyone's channel, I've just watched a ton of covers and reactions of Bo's "Inside". I am just spreading the fun stuff people are making from this special... I love the shadows that looked like background singers at 8:45 - Also, after this song Bo said don't kill yourself .. He goes into a small monologue.

30 hit me hard. Because I was no where in life and I wasn't young anymore. But in a few months I'm gonna turn 40 and am close to my degree, I am married, have a career and I'm happy. It gets better y'all. Just never let yourself become derailed by failure. Failure is only temporary, until you give up.

"he's having an existential crisis" that's exactly it. I think mostly this song is about feeling like he hasn't done anything he feels matters? Like I don't think he's necessarily saying that turning 30 is a bad thing, but I think we all put kind of emphasis on certain milestones and we expect to have accomplished things before certain points in our lives, you know? I think he's very accomplished, he's intelligent and funny and an amazing creator (as a comedian, producer, director, writer, like damn, how many people can say all that and actually have their end product come out good??). But how he mentioned that he "used to run for miles" and how when his grandad was 27 he fought in Vietnam and now here he is, older than his grandad was when he fought in Vietnam and he hasn't really done anything he might feel is important. Especially with context from previous songs in the special, like Comedy and How the World Works, sounding like he wants to try and make a difference and do good things but doesn't know if he can, and then here he is turning 30 and feeling like other people have accomplished more before they turned 30, you know? It's like looking at all the famous people and athletes and being like "man, this person won three gold medals or won these awards before they were my age, what have /I/ done with my life??" That's what I took from it at least.

The current path I'm on in life will mean that I'm not done with University until I'm 24 (and would be turning 25 in only a few months after that) and that thought scares me so much, mostly because I'll have spent a quarter of a century in education and finally have to deal with actually being an adult. But hey, I'm turning 20 in a month so I guess I still have time to learn.

Late to the party but got here as quick as I could. Wanted to throw this out there: I just finished a psychology of adolescence class where we discussed that adolescence actually ends at 25, which is why many feel more "put together" in their late 20s. It's because your brain is literally still developing until 25. I totally agree with you that it is rediculous that society makes literal children make decisions that define their entire life, but I do think we should still encourage some kind of direction. I am one of those weirdos who knew what they wanted at age 10 and am still on that path. But I do think we should stress that it's ok to not know what you want right away.

28 here, Pretty much my entire life's been hopping from one hobby to another, always in search of something fun, but getting bored within a couple weeks, and now there's nothing left for me to feel excited about. Also, hopping jobs, I got a degree in graphic design, got a job in social media, was laid off, then did papa john's and phone delivery, Never could dig myself into the graphic design workplace because frankly I'm not talented enough, now I'm working as a staff accountant. I'm definitely in a declining state of mental and physical health. And just recently I lost all my friends, a large reason of which being that that group of friends (and I) had always been a part of the same religious group. But then I stopped being religious, and suddenly I had no support, no respect, and was constantly arguing with them. Not to mention around the same time I moved across the country during covid into an area that has very few people my age, so I haven't been able to make any new friends. I'm just.....done. I'm going to a psychiatrist in december, checking if I've got adhd, and my only hope at this point is that I do, and maybe some medication will help me focus on one thing for once in my life, and I can start picking my life back up. If I don't, Idk what I'll do, but it probably won't be good. I've at least told myself that I'll keep at least trying until I turn 30, and if I can't get my life together by then, I doubt I ever will...... So....At least I won't have any friends who will miss me.
