I love this segment. It is a perfect demonstration of spiraling anxiety. At first he is just trying to explain what he was thinking, but then he is harshly critical of his initial presentation, followed by becoming harshly critical of his harsh criticism. Beating himself up over beating himself up. And the fact that the video keeps looping shows how negative thoughts create that endless spiral where you feel bad about feeling bad about feeling bad. It is genius and very moving if you have ever been trapped in a spiral like that.

You’re so right about the anxiety part. The fact that multiple video layers are playing makes the video feel more and more chaotic and then you can visually see bo get more anxious as he criticizes himself.
@monodescarado
@monodescarado 2 жыл бұрын
This is exactly it. It’s the endless spiral of his own brain. And yet it’s brilliant how he manages to wrap that inside a mockery of internet reaction culture, and a critique of internships. And then still make you sit and think: wait, how’s he doing this? This is what I love about Inside in particular: on a first viewing, you often just see the spectacle (in this case the fact that he’s reacting to reactions), you might catch a bit of what’s being said but it’s mostly the visuals and music that hits first; then on a second watch you start paying attention more to what’s being said (the critique, the analysis, the metaphors); and then on a third watch you can sit and actually appreciate the intelligence in the production. Truly brilliant.

I think the “overlapping “ commentaries are also meant to represent anxiety prone overthinking , overanalyzing, until it turns into a cacophony of raceing thoughts ... one of the meta levels of this little piece of genius .

Love the visual representation of an anxiety spiral, as well as how he trolled so many reactors. He's a youtuber, so he must have known this would work as a kind of prank haha

1. The song 2. Analysis of the song, being initially pleased with what he made. 3. Pointing out his perceived flaws in the analysis - overthinking and preempting critique. 4. Criticising the overly critical reaction to himself and his defense mechanisms. More overthinking, trying to counteract that, and being self aware but aware of the self awareness. This is anxiety, so perfectly represented in video form.

If I remember right, Bo has spoken in interviews about how his live specials were basically scripted to the breath, given the complexities of his creative vision for them. If that's true, scripting and performing the reaction sequence must have been simple by comparison!

Reactions to Bo have been extra popular, especially for Inside, and it's because he blocked the comments on all his songs. Normally, when people watch a video, they immediately go into the comments to talk about it with other people, or simply to hear additional thoughts on the subject.

If you’re talking about the official song videos he uploaded for Inside, he didn’t block the comments himself. YT rolled out an update a year ago that automatically blocks comments on all official releases for songs that are uploaded via YT’s automated music program.

@@ChrisReactsToThings @Chris Reacts I'm not surprised you ended up remembering the word. 😉 You're so good at dissecting videos you're watching for the first time that the occasional verbal shortcomings are totally understandable given you're not delivering a scripted discourse. My words about your channel seem well deserved: your reactions and interpretation of the songs from Inside have been top notch and your special mix of smart, nice, sensitive, handsome and hot (those big arms get me every time!… 😻😄) is pretty irresistible. I was compelled to subscribe just a few videos in even though I'm trying to limit my subscriptions list and I watch a few reactors I really like without subscribing to their channel because they often react to stuff I don't care about. But since all you've been reacting is performances from Mr. Burnham and one can't get enough of Bo it seems I'm going to watch plenty more of you (and I'm sure I'll keep enjoying that experience). 😉

I was kind of puzzled how he made it as well for a while, but I think maybe the simplest way (which still would obviously take practice/timing) is to have just had the original Unpaid Intern video playing on loop (since each iteration is that same length). Then he could know where he is supposed to be in each iteration based on where it is in the original video. I don't know if that makes sense but yeah something like that maybe :).

Once you get done reacting to the videos from "Inside", you really need to sit down and enjoy it in its entirety. It hits differently watching it in order and there is more to it than just all the songs of course. I was going to ask if you are familiar with Bo's older works? Because they shine a light on his mental state and things that have bothered him over the years. If you haven't, I can give you a key list of songs that are a must watch when it comes to Bo Burnham. Some even as far back as 2010. You talked about Bo's hiatus in a previous video, so that makes me think you are familiar with a lot of his older stuff and know his backstory with mental health and all that. Edit: time to watch the video

I really liked this and all of your reaction videos. I'm 32 so it is a generational stretch for me to watch any reaction video. It's not my thing, but I understand that it helps us humans feel connected to another human. I found someone that talked about you in comment on a bo burnham reddit thread and I have enjoyed seeing the emotions on your face change while watching. I've seen the tears in your eyes and the expressions on your face. It's a weird cool thing you are doing. It makes me feel connected to humanity. I've been a Bo fan for over ten years. I instantly wanted your take on this video because in a sense it makes fun of what you do, while still doing what you do. I would have just loved to watch you watch the whole special, you know the way you watch a friend discover something you love sitting next to you on the couch. I'm sure you know that feeling, because you are doing it remotely. Inside is meant to be played in it's chronological order, in my opinion. And without interruptions. But you still made me feel something watching you. I didn't listen much to what you were saying, because I think that in Bo's case interpretation is part of his art piece. Your emotions made me feel though and thank you for that.

As usual, your reactions are the best! And it's okay, take the time you need to post, we will wait ✨ The first thought I had while watching that segment was "this is how anxiety feels like" it starts with something small, then it becomes bigger and bigger, then the intrusive thoughts come, and then it's a never ending spiral. Then again I learned that "self awareness" part too, in therapy. My therapist said that being self aware of our trauma actually deepened the trauma itself hahaha there's a longer explanation of that, but that's basically it

I love the fact he used a jazz vibe for this song because it reminds me of the jazzy chorus songs we sang as kids like the one that went “16 tons and what do you get, another day older and deeper in depth” and “sold my soul to the company store” and just how the kids signing these in chorus don’t get it but now post college I’m like it’s so hard because in specific majors and specialities there are no paid internships. In fact you pay your college for a credit that is used for an internship which technically means you’re paying to be an intern. It’s ridiculous. But this happens with social work, many psychology internships, teachers internships. It’s horrible. But when you’re forced to just to get credits to graduate it’s like what else are you supposed to do?

On a lighter note, i thought i could share this.. Back in August i got an (unpaid) internship at a bakery/ cafe and i thought it would be hilarious to set this song as my ringtone. (ikr) So this one day, as we were about to leave, my boss hauls this huge ass Zebra out of the walk in that he shot on his yearly hunting trip and the interns had the 'privilege' of breaking it down for him. Since a Zebra carcass in the kitchen was a rare sight, most of the staff (as well as my boss) were watching us and a while later my mom calls to figure out where i was and, well, i couldn't hang up since my hands were covered in zebra. Unpaid intern was just blasting at full volume in this vacant, quiet bakery from my back pocket. My friend thought it was hilarious but i nearly shat myself. I didn't get fired tho, surprisingly, but i still haven't looked my boss in the eyes. Maybe he felt called out, idk. Its funnier in hindsight than it was in the moment haha (edit: spelling mistake)

In the medical field, we call the unpaid intern “student” under the umbrella of “clinical experience”. I don’t actually feel like people in that situation should be paid, since people are taking time out of their actual duties to do in person teaching in a clinical setting. Sounds like companies have sort of bastardized this idea to not pay people doing actual autonomous work. Naaaaay

I don't know if anyone's commented this and you've probably figured it out for yourself but the "easy" way to replicate what Bo did is to record the entire "first" reaction and add a green screen where the reaction video will be shown in post. Then he can chroma key the recording of the first reaction while editing and keep looping it.

He actually seems to have gotten this idea from the H3H3 Podcast episode he did, where they accidentally started watching their own live feed and this started happening. So, you have a video feed being recorded, and you start playing the music video live, fullscreen. Then, cut to the camera on Bo, and pop up in the Picture in Picture on the screen the stream playback, which is paused. so when he hits play for the first time in the reaction video, he's playing the feed he just started recording, and from there on, the video make itself, no cuts.

In every reaction he peeled back another layer. First reaction was surface-level. Second reaction was him realizing how pretentious he sounded to himself with his initial reaction. Third reaction was him realizing that even when he holds himself under a microscope, it's only a defense mechanism. Every reaction was peeling back another layer and he got to the point where he wanted it to end because it's easier to hide behind the layers then to strip them away and really look at your motivations and what's really deep down. I think that's the point he was trying to convey with the skit. The more layers we peel back, the more we see, and most of us really don't want to see ourselves for who we are because I think all of us will realize that the deeper we go into why we are who we are and why we do what we do, and the more honest we are with ourselves about the reasons behind the reasons within the reasons, the more we discover that if you dig deep enough, you will always find dirt. I'm pretty sure this is based on at least one philosophical concept or exercise, the why behind the why behind the why, and if I remember correctly, it's about how there's always a root of selfishness in everything we do, no matter what the surface-level says, or how altruistic someone seems. It stems from the argument that altruism does not exist and all we do is rooted in selfishness and self-interest. Think of someone with what is called a good conscience who helps someone in need. Why does this person help? First layer, because this person needs help and I have the ability to help. Go a few layers in, you realize this person would feel bad if they didn't help, it would weigh on their conscience, maybe they're just helping so they don't feel bad for not helping, whatever helps them sleep at night, right, and then there's more layers after that.Think about why you wouldn't want something bad to happen to a loved one. If you dig deep enough, you realize that the core reason you would cry if you heard that someone close to you died is because they meant something to you. When strangers die, you might feel bad about it for a few seconds, but their lives don't have as much value to you as a friend or family member. Therefore, all of someone's value and worth, to you, is based on their connection to you. You are at the center of their value and worth. This whole special is about peeling back layers. In this skit, he wants the self evaluation to stop. By the end of the special, he is naked in the spotlight for everyone to see. Or maybe, like Bo, I'm overanalyzing this whole thing and if you look at anything long enough, you can always find something wrong with it. I just read through what I posted, and wow, hate to steal Bo's word, but I'm coming off as really pretentious. This whole comment is one big look at how deep and thoughtful I am, yet my life's a mess. Why did I feel the need to give a lecture like I'm some professor at a college? Just so I can check back later, hoping that people liked my comment, maybe left a comment to my comment saying something like wow that's really insightful, another pathetic attempt to be validated. I just read through everything I wrote so far. I really am pathetic. I realize that my first reaction is just me being a narcissistic attention-seeking preachy know-it-all a hole, so what do I do? I point it out in an attempt to seem humble and self-reflective, and how is that any different from the first comment I left? Basically did the same exact thing. Just another way of saying look at me. If I really felt that way about the first comment, why didn't I just delete it or change it and start over instead of trying to run myself through some discount redemption arc? I'm saying about what I said, oh, I'm just being a pretentious a hole, then I posted anyway? Look at me everyone, I'm deep about realizing that I'm not deep. Pathetic. Everything I wrote is garbage. It's less than nothing. I'm not even going to delete it because I don't want to be able to come back from this, I want to know that if I leave a comment now on something, someone's going to read this comment and realize that I'm full of s*** and then maybe if I'm held accountable for these empty, dog and pony show comments, it will shame me into not writing stupid s*** like this. No more edits, I can't do this anymore. If you see me leave a comment in the future, it's all bullsh**, I really don't have anything of value to say.

I think he recorded the song and then reacted to it, and as soon as it started he could have been streaming his camera feed directly to himself in the computer, so that way he could react in real time to the thing he was recording if that even makes sense.

He just recorded the entire reaction all at once. He was never reacting to the reaction, that way you could play back the earlier portions and make it seem like he was.

Working for “experience/exposure” was the worst. I had an unpaid internship at Sears a few years ago. It’s not worth doing retail work for nothing.

Pretty sure it’s a single take dude, which we watch on the left throughout. Then he just cuts off the last reaction in post and crops it into the the top right. Then he repeats that again several times.

I don't think he actually live-reacted to anything. The entire bit is scripted and rehearsed to perfection. He already knows what to say and when to say it. That's bow Bo Burnham works. He could perform this bit (and just about any of the bits in this special) live, and it would be almost exactly the same.

Yes, I totally agree-I don’t think any of the singing is “live” either-even when there is no mic, the lip syncing is perfect. And not just the singing; the video of him projected on the wall during All Eyes On Me was pre-recorded; his movements were choreographed, meticulously, down to the subtlest gesture. Truly mind blowing.

Unpaid interns should have like a contract like if I work for you for 4-5 months for free, I get a complementary car paid by the company or a lease for a house, not paying interns is just crueler than the devil himself honestly

Remember, Actors Act, it's kind of the way it works, its a show, entertainment, he makes you think, perhaps a bit too much IDK.. Yes he is talented and yes, everything he does is scripted out. again, that's kind of how it works. ironically, he is showing all your reactors that he is toying with you LOL
