In this video I'm gonna teach you how to get started striking with your Bo staff just like I've taught so many others. I'll be using this staff that I put the tape on, your suggestion, with the yellow and the red tape so that you could see better what I'm doing on each side. Grab your staff and follow me.
For these strikes I'm gonna have you use one of two grips. The first grip is going to be an alternating grip so that the hands are facing each other, and on the other one, both hands will be facing the same direction, away from you like you're doing a push up. Start with this grip first, both hands, middle of the staff, holding, facing opposite directions. You're gonna start first with a downward strike, think of a chop right to the neck or to the clavicle here, maybe to the head.
When you bring it down, lock it in under that elbow. Now, the red side today is my left side. Take the right side, the yellow side, and push it forward coming across smacking him right in the jaw, straight down and then over.
Now from here, I want you to jab straight in with the yellow side. I want you strike down, strike across, jab. Now, same thing on the other side. Put the other foot forward, change your grip so the right palm is facing up, left down. Come first down, that angle, yellow side, red side across, red side jab.
Now, the second set of strikes, that push-up position. These are like punches straight out holding tightly. Left foot forward, left side punching first just to the temple. Right side. Now you'll notice, unlike the other one, this one's not under, this one's over to protect me. Knee.
Switch your feet. Switch you're feet, so that you have two punches up, two punches down, pull in, and jab. When you jab, that one does go under the arm, and you're turning, locking, wrist up, wrist out.
Those are some basic strikes. Get to work. Let me know in the comment section below if this was helpful or not. Did I go to fast? Would you like me to slow it down? Can I go faster?
