Hearing you explain the mechanics feels like a skit about overcomplicated board game mechanics lol

Thanks for covering this game, it got me and a friend to play it over Tabletop Simulator, and then he bought it for me as a birthday gift. We just finished the "campaign mode" today, and the "secret content" was wild enough to be damn near horrifying. But we beat it! And we're hoping to play it a whole lot more.

Shame that this game isn't an easy recommend for Sonic fans who don't play board games. This could have been perfect for one of my friends but "finicky" is anathema to them.

If I set this up in front of someone that doesn't play hobby board games, I think they'd immediately ask to do something else, lol. Not saying there can't be a complicated Sonic themed board game, but like... This is a lot.

This looks pretty good for a sonic board game compared to other sonic board games I have seen. Ps I think you prozd would be a fun knuckles in like a cartoon or anime

This sort of reminds me of Pokemon Tabletop United, a pretty popular Pokemon TRPG where it seems like the goal was to _perfectly_ recreate every Pokemon game possible into a single TRPG ruleset. It's pretty accurate; almost anything you can find in a Pokemon game is somewhere in that book. The problem is it ends up being a really challenging game to play because there's so many things happening all at once all trying to perfectly recreate a video game into a tabletop game. I think this is doing something similar; every time I see a rule come up, I say "Oh, like the game!", like I can see every connection they made and I think that's really impressive. But I thiiiiink they may have went a little too hard in trying to make this a Sonic game board game. Like you gotta get through the levels, you gotta avoid badniks, oh you gotta go through the bonus stage and find the Chaos Emeralds! You gotta fight the boss and you gotta hit it multiple times, and yeah i _get it,_ I do feel like I'm playing Sonic, but it's also like every time I touch something it's gonna fall apart. It is _beautiful_ in its love for classic Sonic but perhaps a little meticulous in its detail. Immediately off the top of my head I'm noticing that every single slot for a die requires one specific number. I know different characters have abilities to modify their dice results, but uhhhhh usually when I see a dice placement game, there's a range of options as to what dice I can place where, like "3+" or "below 5". In this game it's more like "if you didn't roll a 4 you can fuck yourself right off, I hate you". I get that you're rolling a bunch of dice and you have multiple options of which way to go, but I mean, your very first roll was an almost total whiff (assuming you didn't have any abilities to use, I would have to go back and watch again now that I know how to play to find out), and that's never going to feel good to roll a fistful of dice, get no workable numbers, and say "okay. go ahead, next player".

I love this game. But boy. Oh boy. Is it a learning curve to figure out all the rules. I found that once I grasped all of them though, I actually found that it’s easier once you know all the rules really well. So it’s one of those games where the rules are complex enough that remembering all of them is a mechanic unto itself. But once you do have a solid understanding I actually think that it can become extremely modular and you can pretty easily shorten or speed it up by intentionally circumnavigating certain soft rules like how many cards you pull and whatnot. Plus there’s some really fantastic Easter eggs that I liked. So I understand where you’re coming from but I think I liked it quite a bit more than you did.

Pretty unique gameplay. Refreshing to see (I’m sure there are similar games, I’m just not familiar with any)

Its interesting because its rated only a 2.0 on BGG which means its not like "Connect 4" but its on the easier side of complexity. I think I remember hearing about this game though

I have this old game, I’d love to see if you can get a hold of it. It’s call “Key to the Kingdom” If I knew how to safely ship it to you I would. It was a favorite of mine as a kid

I kind of feel like you don't explain things fluidly I'll be real... lot's of "we'll get to that later" and it feels like a disjointed explanation of what's going on. I think even if it's a complicated game it might be your job to simplify it a bit in an explanation if you're making a holistic review and I also feel even simple games could sound complicated if you keep having to bounce between stuff. To me it just feels like a "roll dice and these mechanics make you roll dice more while giving you something to do with those dice". This doesn't JUST feel like a complicated game, but also a confusing review. Can't judge based off of this :/

Awww so sad. It had a pretty interesting premise. But tbh i think it would have been more fun as a racing game kinda like cubitos to draw in more people into the board game hobby.

That is ridiculously complicated

Completely agree with this review - it's very thematic, but overly fiddly and complex. However, I still rate it a 7.5/10.

This seems like a game that was designed to be a digital experience adapted to a physical game with all the things to keep track of. Hell, the bones of a slay the spire rogue-like are all here. Co-Op board games are already a tough sell for a lot of people and this seems like its just a bit much. It's interesting that a game based on a game celebrated for it's simple mechanics has so much needless complexity.

That's a shame. As a lifelong Sonic fan who likes board games, I had some concerns when the game was revealed, and this seems to validate all of my concerns. The game looks too complicated for the average person and conveys too many gameplay elements to keep track of, compared to other board games I like. I wish I could like it more.

Sonic board game fans can't catch a break.

This really seems like this game was made with the IP first and mechanics were tacked on to other mechanics tacked on to other mechanics. Also... points for a co-op game? Why are games still doing this? Bad sonic games will keep coming out, analog or digital does not matter.

I'm a Sonic guy but not really a craft board game person. I absolutely can't follow how you're supposed to play this game or why it would be entertaining, which is a shame.
