I'm working on a No Backlight board today, so here's a two parter explaining how the DC-DC Boost Converter that drives the backlight works, followed with how I diagnose problems with it...

It's pretty funny actually cause i watched some board repair videos and they say the backlight fuse is the component that never blows, Louis Rossmann has a video where the lcd connector has 2 pins completely destroyed and the backlight fuse is intact. Nice content, these sequence of videos gave me some basic understanding of how to diagnose these boards myself, thank you very much!

Hi. Really enjoying your videos. I have some lcds from old laptops and i think one of them might have been shorter to ground as you said here and blown the backlight circuit on 3 boards on which I wanted to test if it works. Might that be just the fuse blown or maybe something more.

Hi Sir, and many many thanks for sharing all this. if possible please I need an information. I blown a backlight fuse on a ThinkPad T460S replacing the screen and not removing the batt ... As a emergency repair I just short the blown fuse but I want replace it. now I know that is next to impossible to find a identical fuse , but can I use a generic 3A SMD fuse instead? (I`m not in repairing computers but I work in automotive electronics) many many thanks again and all the best

And I'm starting to buy equipment (flux, tweezers, multimeeter etc.) but i am stuck in choosing the desoldering machine. Can you please tell me if i could use a soldering "gun" (more like a stick) a heat gun (which temperature i will use?) or a rework station(with a mini heat gun)? Thank you,

Unfortunately the problem here was quite simple....but i really wish if you could throw more light on backlight enable circuit....like all the necessary enable signals for the chip to work properly....for instance if there was a backlight fault and suppose the driver chip was guilty how to be sure of the chip to be faulty was the real challenge.... please make a video on this subject... anyways still i must say that your videos are very systematically explained...with very sensible diagnosis..... please keep up the good work. Really appreciate your work.

It's simply a matter of finding where the voltage (correct voltage rating) ends. But keep in mind that a failure can affect multiple components. Replace one; if it's still not working, then verify that power is going through and follow it till it ends again. If you think that's too much work then replace the whole thing.

This is a brilliant tutorial, thanks. I have a MBP Mid 2012, which has no backlight (but works with an external monitor). However I followed your steps and found out: 1) no shortage from the main LCD power rail(s) to ground; 2) I have 12.6v at pin4 and 12.2v at pin3 of Q9806. But both LCD_BKLT_EN and BKLT_PLT_RST_L are 0v and PPBUS_SW_LCDBKLT_PWR is not present. What would be my next move in searching faulties for this no-bklt problem? Thanks!

Check out this thread - looks like a good place to start with diagnosing "no LCD_BKLT_EN". You need the signal to make any more progress with the backlight. boards.rossmanngroup.com/threads/820-3115-no-backlight-missing-lcd_bklt_en.1359/

Hi! thanks for the video, i have a MacBook 2008 with a backlight issue, i had backlight fuses of MacBook 2011 in stock, they are F9700 and i replaced the backlight fuse with those F9700 and it didn't work, so i searched and saw it is actually F9800 and it is another fuse. my question is does that really make a difference using an F9700 instead of an F9800 on my 2008 Macbook pro? thanks!

amateur question, my laptop from is 2014, probably CFL backlight, when you turn off backlight (keyboard key) off and on, its 100% area and luminosity for 2s then 10% of area goes to about x0,3 luminosity (made up number) and the rest sill normal, it stayed like that for months, and now its 40% of area shadowed to 0,3 lum, still the same 2 seconds of 100%normal if you turn backlight off and on at any time, my multimeter is in another state and i cant get it for months... is this behavior indicative of a good chance of being through-hole capacitor problems or something else that i could easily see and repair with just an amateur iron? or is it a waste of time disasembling without a multimeter?
@Adamant_IT
@Adamant_IT 4 жыл бұрын
Naa, 2014 will be LED, the CCFLs died out in like, 2008 for MacBooks and by 2012 for everything else. This is especially true if you have uneven backlighting, CCFL is a single lamp, so it can't really be uneven. Most likely it's just a bad panel that needs to be replaced.

It depends on what else I'm doing. If it's just a straight up, "change the backlight fuse, it's fixed send it out", I'd do it for my flat fee of £50. Usually I roll-in a full service of the laptop, clean it up, update and tidy up macOS, etc, and then I'd be charging £80. These are estimate walk-in prices though, I generally use my judgement on complex jobs, depending on the fault, the laptop, etc. I am also in a rural area, so my prices are very low, but so is my rent.
