Fall of the Mountain King. A Game that is 100% not In The Hall of the Mountain King but rather is loosely related in theme and art alone. I mean both also have cards. And pieces. And players. So really more the same than different after all. Fall brings you area control and a clever action selection system, but more importantly...it's awesome.

Scoring System
5 - Great game. Period. It's in my collection. Obviously.
4 - Really solid game but for reasons X or Y, I'm just not willing to give it my top score. Almost always a game I'm adding to my collection.
3 - A solid game. May or may not enter/leave my collection depending on a number of factors such as other similar games, personal interest, people I play with etc. Sometimes can reflect a game's allure dropping over time.
2 - I'm either not the target audience, or too many issues with it.
1 - An arguably bad game.

Great review. I've had the hall of the mountain king sitting on my shelf for months now and haven't gotten it to the table. This game peaks my interest a lot more. I'll be a day 1 backer. Thanks Alex. I should really stop watching your videos though, I think I've dropped $1000 in the past 2 months on KS games just from them haha.

Am I the only one who isn't always impressed by "mini upgrades" to meeples? I love a custom wooden meeple and I find them very practical to store vs minis

I would love it if they had custom shaped and screenprinted meeple for this. Like Oath and Root. Think that would fit really well aesthetically as well.

Looks nice visually already, I like how colorful but dark it is at the same time. Not sure about gameplay though, I didn’t play any area control games yet (except maybe smallworld once) and I play mostly solo lately

Great review. I'm a huge In the Hall fan, but this one doesn't quite convince me just yet. So the concept behind it is that you know you're being overrun right from the start and have to score as many points before the inevitable?

Basically yes. It works well too, you never actually get overrun before the end of the game, but the gnomes do keep pushing in.

Good review! I really enjoy Hall of the Mountain King. But I don't care for area control, so I'll probably skip this one.

Hm, for me it is a bit too much going on next to the area control. I think, Tyrants of the Underdark are better for me :)

Not yet, I generally don't play area control games with two. Works well at 3 and 4, don't yet have components for 5 although it will play at 5.

Well Endeavor for me is top 100...so I would just say we likely both like Endeavor...but feel differently about how much :)

hmm dunno... probably not my style, but looking forward to the campaign to better understand this. also: it looks like a table hog, I feel like the cards could be half the size to trim the space they take, just to mention the first thing that came to mind...

Reasonable assumption, depends what you compare it to but I would say I complain about table space a lot, and wasn't an issue for me here.

I like hall a lot but felt the solo mode was a letdown. How is this solo? Is it even possible to solo this?

this was my least favorite playtest of any burnt island game, and I definitely don't see two rookie designers meshing it into something higher regarded than endeavor when two of the pillars of the design are randomness and blind drawing hidden information that may/may not be useful, those are both anathema to a good table experience.

Welp! We're sorry to hear that. We hope that you will give it a second try and decide after another play if still do not like it. My favourite thing about gaming is that there are so many games out there, you're bound to find one you like. Lucky for us, you like Endeavor.

Yep, the randomness I don't love.....but the rest of the game around it, I adore. It would take a longer video rather than a comment to go into why I really like Endeavor...but don't find the gameplay as rewarding.

I think the lack of interaction is a bigger turn off for me. Lately I realized I prefer sandboxy interactive boardgames. If I can choose between this and blood rage, I would play blood rage and blood rage is not without its flaws.
