This week we dive into building massively tough cockpit coamings. They will take the loads produced by halyards and winches, and also look good! They've been a very fun project.

Dont forget harken advise "Lines must lead up to a winch at about a 5-to-8-degree angle to prevent overrides". or you can tilt the winch if the lead is horizontal
@chuckscheaffer3952
@chuckscheaffer3952 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, the winches shouldn't be positioned so low. So much work for what reason? Even if you mount a fairlead on the coaming, the angle to the drum looks level. I think the cockpit could have been designed to be much more functional.
@jonnenne
@jonnenne Жыл бұрын
@@chuckscheaffer3952 you can always life the winch but you can't lower it. This is the right way to go about a complex problem. You start with something that can be adjusted
@awetmore
@awetmore Жыл бұрын
The recent work is awesome. Do check the entry angle for the lines on that sunken winch, if it’s under about 7 or 8 degrees you’ll get overrides. I had to fix this on our Express 37 (I added fairleads to pull the line down, but raising the winch is the other option). A small difference eliminated a lot of problems with overrides for us.

Beware of sinking the big winch into to combing as you will suffer from overrides of the lines. The lines need a certain minimum angle downwards from the winch. Also I observed that you kind of oversee that all winches turn clockwise, so the horizontal entry angle onto the drum differs between starbord and port. Starbord you enter the winch outbord and on port the lines enter the drum inbord. Make sure you get it right with the clutches, as curently all looks symetrical to me on your combings. Good luck. Ulf

It's great to see your mum coming out of the background and being comfortable in front of the camera. What a great family team; it's a joy to watch! It will impart something intangible, but special, into Duracell. She's going to be a family boat for life 🙂 This is how humanity should be living: working on projects we enjoy and have meaning to us, while involving family and fiends - new and old - and equally being involved in their projects too. You guys are a wonderfull example 👍

Great job Matt, good solution sinking the big winches. There'll be a lot of crush on the forward circle of the winch base, no doubt you've worked all that out. I'm wondering also about the water build up below the large winches because water, rain and salt, will get in through the circular hole. I expect there'll be drain holes or even left open on the inside which might make winch maintenance easier too?

On the sunken winch on the coming, you may want to provide a quick release “Ring,” (i.e., a frisbee shaped flat ring a 1” -1-1/2” fat surface ring around the winch) hinged to go up/down with easy pull pin to set normal position but pull out to release ring and release jam. Even if you jam didn’t occur between the coming and winch, it could get James underground winch and make equally difficult release!

@Matt: You, you got one heck of an awesome mom! That is so awesome that she wants to help so much and looks to always be enjoying it. Talk about family time! She reminds me so much of when my wife and I first got married and I shared my R/C airplane and helicopter hobby with her. We found a club and I took her flying with me. She loved it so much that I had to go get her her own trainer airplane. The head of the club was an awesome teacher and had her on the buddy box and taught her to fly. In that time, I got really into helicopters and built a rather large one. Showed my wife some KZfaq videos of 3D flying where the pilot flipped the helicopter upside down and went to trim the grass on the field with the main rotor blades. That is when we started joking about the flying weed-wacker. For my BDay that year, she got me a custom embroidered baseball cap that read "Beware of the flying weed-wacker." Even put the website we had while trying to get aerial photography side-hustle off the ground, named after the doxies we had at the time: AnkleBiter Aerial Photography. Couple years' of fun as a couple and, when our son was born, and we took a hiatus from the club due to this, when we brought Jesse out at 4 months old, I can definitely say that the club members enjoyed it far more than Jesse who was more or less "Whatever. Why are we here?" Bunch of whole families in the club who had flight in their DNA and had loads of fun. Life has forced us to store that hobby, but still got the weed-wacker and mom's airplane. Sadly, though, probably not going back into the air due to age and eyes getting bad for us both. Still, got the same kit I built my first time in the closet and waiting for Jesse to get old enough. I get the same sort of impression from your mom whenever she is working with you. Give mom a huge hug from the Flying Weedwacker, AnkleBiter Aerial Photograghy Family.

Love what you are doing with the cockpit , , the winches take in water down the shaft and this water will need to drain out through a pipe or hole in coaming outboard however water will also come in when windward deck is awash, possibly some thing to consider, that winch may suffer from foot rot, love all the vacuum bagging. Light and strong.
