Tristan, as I've always said, these videos you do with Boat owners are very, very informative. I love watching them.

No matter the size, every docking situation is different to a degree and a learning and perfecting of skills moment. This captain listened, didn’t panic and corrected himself and never touched the thrusters. Brillant job, practise makes perfect. Captain, I see too many new owner operators who do not or cannot calculate for wind direction, tide, current, speed and spacial judgement. That should keep you busy mate! Best advice ever; kick self and pride overboard, slow down, take her easy, back off if necessary and accept criticism then pass on your wisdom to others. Have a great day Captain.

If I touch a groundline with my hands I always use working gloves. These lines are often very sharp when covered with small shells.

He took a minute for the captain to trust you and learn something new. I have a saying when I coach kids. "When the uncomfortable becomes comfortable, the comfortable become natural".

Patience and slow docking makes for smooth docking.

Learning from an extremely experienced captain is priceless. I hope these new yacht owners realize repetition is key to success.

Great video. I am really glad that you mentioned about keeping the engines running until vessel is tied safely. I have this argument with my boat neighbors and boaters friends often. They like to cut the motor as soon as they’re in the slip.

Ex yachtmaster myself, have to say you are a great teacher. My teacher allways told me " wind and tide will make you decide" . Don't fight them both, use them to make it easier. Keep up with the content. Missing Awoll though. 👍

Excellent information! I intend to get a boat (hopefully in the med) within the next few years, but I will start off with an older boat and just practice practice practice docking and close quarters maneuvering until I can do it competently (I've seen and spoken to many boat owners who get stressed with docking - but they rarely take the time to just practice in a safe area - and actually it sometimes spoils the boating experience for them because the cant relax for fretting about docking in an unfamiliar berth for example). Cheers!

Nice video. Docking is self inflicted stress… seen many a heated discussion at the docks … I go single handed slow .m. Which gives different problems the approach is the same but the dock lines you have to be precise a tip I learned that has helped me no end was lassoing the cleat ..

Great video. When landing a plane if the pilot does not like his landing approach, he will apply full power, go around and try again. The same applies to docking, if you don't like what is happening, pull out, take a breath and give it another shot.

I'd like to see how you and a mate would crew 24m by yourselves. Dividing duties, scheduling of watches, maintenance or cleaning; or other things to consider for the aspiring owner/captain. Cruising around the Bahamas or the Med with a different port of call every couple of days sounds exciting, but there must be some hidden headaches.

Stern to the wind seems to be opposite of what I've always learned? My experience is the bow is easier to control and thus leaving it exposed to the wind is better. There is no worse feeling than the stern coming around with the wind on it. It's heavier and less responsive to input. Just an observation from a novice.

As a helicopter pilot I think driving a boat has some similarities in terms of patience and small movements. Your vids are fantastic.

Hi Tristan, I've only just started watching your video tutorials. I love watching, but I will never be in the position to own such a yacht. However, I've sailed all my life and become quite adept at docking sailing yachts with far options for control. I am now of an age that means I now hire boats on the Norfolk broads, usually with a single engine and bow thrusters. Now, I am a bit of a perfectionist when it comes to docking, and with these river boats with a high freeboard and shallow draft I am prone to miss my mark if it is windy and the tide is flowing the same direction as the wind when stern mooring. Any tips you could throw in my direction would help my frustration and avoid my wife hiding below decks!😂

Great instructional techniques. I’d be intrigued to know a few things. Had the owner ever driven boats before? Ie PBL2 or dinghy experience? He looked really bemused when told not to touch the wheel on a twin engined vessel. Had you explained the physics of how the engines thrust enables twist as well as fire and aft movement. And the subject of momentum(/inertia (I’m going to get walloped by the scientists over that mush mash) ie remember speed approaching the dock has to be removed before arrival otherwise it becomes expensive! Couldn't you've just pull up on the first docking and tossed a forward spring line to the dock crew and idealed stern/ bumped stern and allowed the crew hold and ease off the kleat to swing the stern in easy. Then tie off and toss a bow line hold and let out the bow as needed? Not much of a yacht captain but have docked a number of 50 to 85 foot shrimping vessels, the docks we tie up to are a lot different as we use pilens and not kleats on the dock also. Just wondering on the differences between the set ups.

firstly why is the helm not standing and getting a better view of the situtation. i teach the five alongsides. 45 dgree approach into the elements (wind or tide), wind off, wind on, reverse to the berth, ferryglide. then the skipper will decide and then work the method. There can be a mix of the methods. when berthing think PAME Preparation, approach, Manouver, escape.

For all the non-yachties out here, you'll be surprised to know here is no formal training for berthing a superyacht. A good Captain will let the First Officer do all the berthing when there are no guests onboard. On the job training is too late. The important thing to learn is the principles and then how to apply them in the conditions that you find yourself in. Learn to know when its not possible and always have an exit plan.

Hi, maybe a very old recuring question, but what happened to the raffle and the tickets?

I disagree Captain. I believe the stern into the wind principle applies to sailing yachts equally. Especially if there is no bow thruster. If you're bow into a firm wind and you lose any forward momentum, the rudder has no effect and your point into the wind will get blown easily to port or starboard in a hurry. For example exiting a slip. If there is a strong wind blowing down the channel you're planning on exiting, it's easier to just reverse out with the stern into the wind than try to miraculously turn the bow up wind.

I tend to get stern looks when I stick my bum into the wind.

Goodness, this owner/pilot was nervous. Was this his first time operating a twin engine yacht? Twins are so simple to maneuver, even without thrusters.

Hi Tristan. Love your channel and have supported it for a few years now. Could you please consider doing away with your headcam. The rapid swinging of the image is nauseous and a hand held or fixed camera would be much better. I have thought this on many videos but this one seems to have the worst effect. Best wishes.

This was very difficult to watch and that captain needs to learn how to follow directions better and listen carefully. He's going to get someone hurt otherwise. Additionally, the captain needs to STAND UP to see what's going on.
