I thought I was driving my boat properly because I didn't realize there was a more efficient way to turn around after the wakesurfer has fallen out of the wave. I'm all about efficiency and you know this if you've watched my other instructional content. This 5 minute edit could save you so much time on the water so you're surfing more and idling less! Check it out and Enjoy your ride! ✌️

Port vs Starboard…my mom, who is not a boater at all helped me remember the difference YEARS ago in boater safety. Starboard, “star on board” the driver. I know some boats are left hand drive, but it was a great mental reminder for a 12 year old! Ryan

Shaun great tip. Really depends on the boat and wake maker set up. With all of the surfgate boats, when you shut down the throttle the boat starts turning immediately without steering at all, because the gate hasn’t shut yet. If you turn the rudder to add more turn, you will spin right around as your waves go past you without needing to hit reverse. Another reason I love all surf boats with Surfgate!! 🚤 🏄‍♀️

Another way to remember port-left and starboard-right, along with the colours is that port is a red wine. So: "There's no PORT LEFT in the bottle". Therefore, port is red and on the left and starboard is green and on the right. Also a very handy tip Shaun, definitely going to try this on our 2015 Sport Nautique 200. I was watching another KZfaqr that wasn't so happy with the rooster tail going over his transom on his G23 but as you mentioned, this solves that and puts you closer to the rider

I surf on a river, so I normally crank it in neutral then use the stern drivers to rotate (such a nice feature). good for staying in line with the rider to protect them from other boats, especially when the river looks more like a two lane highway

My son does alittle but of surfing but I’m trying to get him into your school this summer, wakeboarding is his thing but he’s scared to go fast enough for me to give him a clean wake at 65ft. I learned on your last video I’m going to try 45-50ft and slow the boat down to give him more confidence. I want him to be prepared when he comes to your school
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 2 жыл бұрын
Keep the speed pretty slow, around 16-17 if the wake stays kinda clean, but keep the rope long, around 65 feet so he can practice doing really far 1 wake jumps. Can also add the challenge of a short approach, 5-8 feet from the wake and see how far you can jump. You should be able to jump farther than your approach distance.

Advanced move, if you don't have a rope in the water, tap reverse at 3:05 in your video right as the boat passes about 90 degrees of rotation, it robs a few degrees of spin off you but it keeps the boat more inline with the rider and the line the boat was traveling in instead of ending up outside of it and having to drive the boat back to that line and the rider. Its not a big improvement other than shaving a couple of seconds but it helps on busy lakes to occupy a single line for rider safety... If you have a rope in the water it can work but use your judgement on if you can keep an eye on that and everything else you have going on at the same time, you would have to jam it in reverse and hold it to back over it and your only looking for a tap.
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 2 жыл бұрын
For sure use the reverse tap while wakeboarding and will occasionally use it with this method but I find that doing this usually turns me nearly 180 and doesn't necessitate the tap but good feedback Jon 🤙
@birddog0347
@birddog0347 2 жыл бұрын
I was going to comment the same thing, that's how we do it as well since our lake is generally busier and we want to stay in line with the rider and as close as possible, and it doesn't cost that much extra time. On our Paragon though especially from wakeboard speeds you really want to slow down some before you initiate the turn to avoid the rooster tail swamping the transom.

It’s even more important to turn in the opposite direction as your surfer if you own a Malibu or Axis with Surfgate. The gates take a couple seconds to return to neutral and you won’t be able to turn in the that direction of your surfer. The gates act like a rudder.

Great tips. I don't even ease it into neutral. I just crank the wheel quickly in the opposite direction from surf side and throw it in neutral. The boat moves all the way around from the swell alone. Come back to the surfer in almost a straight line. I cringe whenever I see power turning!

Sitting on the wakesurfer is usually the way to go if you don't have a boom. You can even try using some flat shoes or flip flops to make it slightly easier to learn.

Ok, now that we are turned around and headed back to surfer. Do you turn boat about 30’ in front of surfer? Do you use steering assist or thruster?
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 2 жыл бұрын
Good question John. Depends on which way I'm planning on going sometimes. Sometimes I swing my back end at the surfer and sometimes I just turn around them. I don't use my steer assist when picking people up too often but I hear some people do.

Good question. You send rollers in all directions, smash the front of the bow w your own rollers, doesn’t save much time, and you signal to all other boats that your new to the sport and haven’t learned yet. Just my opinion though

To anyone else that is reading this comment please for the love of god learn the rules of boating BEFORE buying a boat and getting on the water. It’s your due diligence to understand what your navigation lights mean, why half is read and half is green, who has the right of way, what are the different types of buoys and what do they mean, etc.. I own and operate a boat repair shop, the things I’ve heard and also witnessed are horrific, sometimes tragic. The overwhelming majority of boating accidents are extremely avoidable. Idk if it gets mentioned in this video and even if I want to emphasize is again… NEVER under any circumstances back up to swimmers in the water!! I know a guy that personally went through the blender. He saw with his own eyes all of his internal organs as he almost bled to death on the swim deck of the boat. The driver wanted to “save him time” so he backed up to him . So please for the love of god be safe, don’t drink and boat, and lastly let’s keep those hot headed tempers in check it ain’t worth it. Diatribe over✌️😎

Avoid the power turn. This move can easily be down by throttling down right away. Try it out Shawn! ..And no need to reverse
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 2 жыл бұрын
Appreciate it K but this isn’t a power turn. And I don’t usually reverse w this technique, but sometimes it helps, so I’ll put it into use sometimes. Power turns for sure are rookie moves and are bad bc of the swell you can throw, but we’re already creating a swell surfing and you will see this shortens the pick up time by quite a bit. If you just throttle down right away, the swell continues to push you away from the surfer, but with this method, you expose the back corner of the boat to the swell and it turns you around w the power that’s already being generated. Just using what’s there. Giver a go! ✌🏽
@kevinlizzo8031
@kevinlizzo8031 2 жыл бұрын
Nahhhhh. Throttle down first. Immediate and quick turn away from wave. The wave will push you around. The longer the boat is traveling at surf speed, the further away from the surfer you’ll be. When done properly you’re just making a quick circle back to the surfer at idle speed. With your method you need speed to get back to the surfer, which is why you need put the boat in reverse to slow down… you’re trying to get more comments

Throttle down first. Circle back to the surfer and let the back end of the boat drift to the surfer. No reverse needed, and you’re already turned around headed in the right direction. Shaun is wrong here but he is the expert so you should listen to him cuz he’s on KZfaq

Long roller down the lake with that half a power turn IMO.
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 2 жыл бұрын
Good thought Ola but from my experience, wakesurfing is such a slow speed that there's actually a swell created from the straight boat path and no matter how you turn, that swell is going no matter what. Of course, this is mainly from the much bigger/heavier boats, but there's lots out there. But appreciated Ola.
@keithmayotte1512
@keithmayotte1512 2 жыл бұрын
Agree. Wicked roller down the lake. Power turn is a power turn even if just half turn and creates more chaos than just the natural swell. Not worth the few seconds saved. Love your content otherwise Shaun!

You killed the throttle too much, just go to idle and you won't get pushed so far away
@Shaun.Murray
@Shaun.Murray 2 жыл бұрын
Good point but it’s a fine balance bc if I stay on it too much I don’t stay near the power of the swell which is what turns me around. When I’m showing people this, the biggest thing I have to coach is that they first grab the throttle too soon and after that the next thing I have to tell people about is killing the throttle too quickly. So I try to make it a smooth power down to neutral
