... On a weekend or holiday, go to the ramp you will be using w/o your boat. Park in the vehicle lot, NOT the trailer lot. Walk down and just watch how others do it. The good and the bad. Learn from what you see, what to do and what not to do. If you need practice backing up a trailer, go to a large empty parking lot. Could be a store, shopping center or a school. Put some cones or anything else out. Practice backing up there. Then go to the ramp on off hours, when it is less crowded, practice there also. With time you will be an expert. Congratulations on the boat. Also, watch youtube ... like ... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n7GWhcuX1JfIln0.html ... and others. . Jeff .

@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the prop was is surely the biggest culprit of ramp erosion (especially is still water locations). The easy fix is to simply trip up the motor knowing that it'll point farther down as the boat goes up the trailer.

Saw that happen too often that a marina in northern Idaho. The state finally had to come in and fix the concrete slab because the hole was so big underneath it the slab cracked. Not to mention the people who would back their trailers in too far and then hang their axles over this big hole.With their frame bottomed out on the concrete couldn’t get back out. I think it cost them a little over $27,000 to fix it

Delaware's boating safety course online actually cautions against power loading at all. Even with your motor(s) trimmed up, there's still ramp erosion that could damage a trailer and a wash pile that could damage a motor. Just back your bunk trailer far enough and stop your tow vehicle just before the rear tires touch the water. A larger boat is going to have a roller trailer and a power winch anyway. Lots of great information and recommendations! Thank you

Very good points thank you. As mentioned be helpful that’s how we learn . When it’s time to load have your designated person who will go get the vehicle and trailer. This person will be put on the dock and your boat will move back out to open water.wait until you see your trailer being backed down for loading and then you can approach your trailer for loading and move out asap. Some people use the ramp dock for kids and playtime activities so try to get their attention that you will be loading or unloading your boat. Lots of people just don’t know so stay calm and safe. I've seen people hogging the dock because their boat won't start of just because they like to talk. I've seen kids swimming from The dock. I've seen people sitting on the dock with their feet in the water. The dock is used for tieing up your boat to go get your truck. Or to park your truck after you've unloaded your boat. Some of us have to load and unload by ourselves.

When I was a kid, my gang of friends and I would go fish near the boat ramp just to watch people screw up and get into fights. I've watched cars go in the water, I've seen boats get away from people and drift down the inlet with no one on them. I've seen boats damaged, cars damaged, fights. When you're a 12 year old kid, this is no end of entertainment. Just an extra note for the trolls, I said we fished "Near" the boat ramp, not "At" the boat ramp. Even as kids we knew better than to do that.

I would add one more: don't unhook your safety chain/winch hook until you are down at the water. there seems to be one line of thought out there one youtube that says: "get it all ready at the staging area so that you only need to back down and launch the boat." Great if your ramp is gradual, but my experience last summer as my boat slide back off my trailer before getting to the water told me that safety chains and winch hooks are there for a reason.

I always tie the boat off at the farthest end of the dock (no courtesy dock where I launch) then park the truck. That way the ramp is clear and the next boater can start launching. From the other side of things, rule 1...it is a boat ramp first and foremost. not a fishing area. Sure it's fine to fish there (most places). But I've pulled up to ramps locally to see families having a fishing party mid ramp. Beach chairs, rod holders set up, 10 people with lines in the water. And you know what they do when trailered boats arrive? Stare and continue doing what they were doing. No one moves. Well for a couple mins anyway...

When someone gets a new boat, especially the ones getting their first boat: Go to the boat ramp that you intend on using on a Monday or Tue when ramps are slow, practice, practice, practice backing down the ramp, launching and loading. I leave out very early in the mornings so the guys I encounter at the ramp are fishermen and usually as efficient with launching as I am. But when I come back in mid-day, oh my! I have seen too many people that had to just arrived at the lake straight from dealership with their new boat for first outing, what a disaster at the ramp.

Thanks for the detailed video, I don’t own a boat, but... > If the city/county posted the Ramp Rules (5, 10, ?... rules) in multiple places it would “fix” some of the problems. The cost of the signs is nothing compared to the aggravation caused by inconsideration & stupidity. > Remember: you can’t fix stupid! > Posting signs facing the boats coming in for them to trim and winch would cost far less than rebuilding the end of the ramp every few years.

blocking the business lane loading/unloading, you politely ask them to pull away and get a response like, “relax pal, this is a 70k dollar boat”. It’s hard to keep cool.

I have had two incidents with ignorant people tying up the state pier at Westport, MA, by cleaning fish. First time was three guys cleaning a day's worth of fish on a HOLIDAY while I and six other boats waited in the rocks for half an hour to land our boats (The Westort launch has plenty of rocks.). The three guys tied up one of the two docks and the other was in constant use by the holiday crowd launching. The second time at this same public launch was a charter guy with three customers. This guy tied up and cleaned fish for more than half an hour, while another boat launching at the opposite dock tied up and waited for people to arrive. The jerk in the charter boat also caused a delay on his launch by launching before his clients arrived and waiting for them while he stayed tied up at the dock - that's twice in the same day that this RI charter guy screwed other people. In both cases of cleaning fish, the jerks just threw their garbage into the water at the dock. Both times the Westport Harbor Master was called but wasn't able to get to the docks before the jerks made their mess, screwed the rest us, and left.

And yes, i forgot the plug on my jetski. Haha. Also, i bought a 19ft open bow boat a month ago, dont have the slightest idea what im about to do. Hence, im watching all these you tube vids. 2:35 mistake number 5 in demonstration. Lazy people power up instead of using the trailor winch.
@Saltstrong
@Saltstrong 4 жыл бұрын
The biggest issue with powering up is when the motor is pointing downward because the water flow will pull away dirt from under the concrete which can eventually damage the ramp. The person at the 2:35 mark had the motor trimmed up so that the prop wash wouldn't cause damage to the ramp.

I fish a lot but myself. Taking the boat off and on means you leave the boat with no one with it. When I take it off I tie it to dock or rock if no dock, I find a lot of people don't have the patience for me to park and come back to boat. Are they supposed to wait until I get in my boat and leaving before they back in. One other problem are people fishing where I need to park boat while I park truck, almost got in fight because he laid rod on ground and I couldn't see it. Who has right of way in those situations.
@joanngabriele6096
@joanngabriele6096 3 жыл бұрын
If your trailer is in the water, you move your boat over to the boat dock/parking area. Then you go to your truck/trailer and pull out to go park. You are expected to be able to park your boat in the boat/dock area while your trailer is in the water. God help the idiota that pulls their boat behind your trailer LOL.

This is true but also be understanding of inexperienced boaters. Not everyone had Dad like mine or potentially yours that had them either backing the boat down or taking it off the trailer from the time they were 14. They have to learn and gain experience. I tell you if I hadn’t fished tournaments, I wouldn’t have known the headlight rule. No one told me. Granted I observed other people turning their lights off at the ramp, but still that not in a manual. It would be very easy to not catch that and blind the other boaters. Doesn’t mean they don’t have common sense or that they are inconsiderate, just means they are ignorant and inexperienced. You walk over and explain it to them and they know now.

I'd try to reverse in a hurry getting the trailer all twisted it was a mess she literally didn't want to go anymore because of how I was it was horrible now literally slow and steady wins the race at the ramp as long as things flow smoothly... block everyone out... I'd literally tell myself fnck everybody else here they can kiss my glass...I got better now we're Just go out and enjoy ourselves and everyone is happy

Sorry but I think number one should be learn to back up with the trailer before even lunching anything in the water. Number 2 - learn the preparation steps for your lunching. Have everything ready in the boat before getting near the lunching zone. Number 3 - ask for help if you new to the sport. They are plenty of people willing to help you , so you have a safe lunch
