Boat Shifter/Throttle Control Cable Replacement (Four Winns stuck in gear)

This video will show you how to replace the shifting/throttle control cables on a boat. This boat is specifically a 1996 Four Winns 190 Horizon. If your boat gets stuck in a forward or reverse gear, then this is probably this video for you. The cables were about $80 each but well worth the cost.

This is a great video. My 2001 Horizon 190 with the 5.0 did the same thing - that black molded keeper on the shift cable broke and all I had was forward. My cable was a little stiff and I wasn't able to hold it like you did. I watched your video last year (mid 2022) and decided to put a bunch of JB Weld on it rather than replacing the entire cable. Well, that lasted until this year, 2023 when the JB Weld broke. I ordered a 14ft cable from Amazon, about $85 shipped. I then removed my old cable, and found it to be a 15ft. I have the correct one coming now. Thanks again for your video.

Your cables will be much longer since your is a 24’. It’s really not too hard to replace. You will like it when you are done.

Would a small amount of silicon spray have made it easier to push/pull the new shifter cable?

I had a hard time finding a replacement. Mine is still good though. You have to make sure you get one with the correct push or pull.

Hi, thanks for the video I found it looking for the black piece that holds the cable to the control console. A friend of mine asked me to make that part for his boat as he has the same lever as his. Could you tell me the brand of that lever or how to find the model? I would need a replacement of the black piece that holds the cable.

That black piece is molded to the cable. I would just purchase a new cable $80. I assume he wants you to 3d print one. 3D printed one will break a lot easier than the molded plastic. Hope that helps.

Just curious are the nuts to take off the panel easy to reach or a bit hidden, I’m having a hard time locating them on my boat.

Your boat may be different but just reach up under the panel and feel for them. The 2 screws in the back are harder to see. Use a mirror to see those.

Can you buy the replacement plastic cable clamps for the shift cable? That's exactly what broke on mine.

I wouldn’t bother. The new cable is sooo much more free. I would spend the $80 and replace it. You will be much happier shifting. I just did both cables since they were 27yrs old. I could have got away with just changing the shift cable.

@@fixthemthings Yes, replace the cables, I agree... but the plastic broken clamp thing is art of the shifter, not the cables.

@@fixthemthings In your video you called it a cable holder. I got the boat in by doing exactly what you said...held it steady in order to get it into neutral.

@@davefitch6380 oh. I’m sorry. I thought you were talking about the plastic on the cable. Not sure if you can buy those or not. You may have to fabricate something yourself or find one in junk yard. I assume google search didn’t work. I would try OMC control box or OMC remote control parts in google.

@@fixthemthings OK..cool. the one I'm trying to sort out is from a 2008 Four Winns. I think that plastic design is not very good. But, if the cables were replaced maybe the plastic is ok.

OK so I have a 1996 190 Horizon, green just like yours, and I'm a huge Rush fan. Had the same shirt you're wearing, until I wore it out. And of course I have your grey hair. Are we the same person?

@@fixthemthings 5'7" on a good day🙃. Guy at Four Winns told me that mine was actually made with the '97 driveline. Wife wants a bigger boat but I don't want to part with it. Cheers!
