Hi Taylor, often when you have a struggling alternator and low charge batteries, a good thing to check is whether there is corrosion on the battery cables. The battery terminals are easy to scrape clean, and the one on the alternator is often easy to access. There is a fourth, annoyingly difficult negative wire on the engine block. If that connection is corroded, the whole system will fail to charge.

I think this sailboat, with it's electric/mechanical issues, is a great first sailboat for you to get familiar with marine vessels in general. Your willingness to figure things out on your own and get things working shows you have the right attitude and drive to succeed as a solo traveler and with a team as well. Excellent efforts from both you and your mom! Great episode! Soon you will be sailing with a fully working vessel and can start to enjoy the relaxing Caribbean waters! Keep going!

I sure admire your patience and repair skills. I lived aboard a sailboat for awhile in Thailand. I remember meeting a guy that had owned a couple boats, and he had this to say: * The second best day of your life is when you buy a sailboat. The BEST day is when you sell it. And ... The second best thing life is owning your own sailboat. The BEST thing is having a FRIEND who owns a sailboat. And, ya know, looking at all the "fun" you're having with this, I tend to agree. Anyway, good luck. I really enjoy your vids. You're an inspiring woman.

Hi Taylor-My parents had an Alberg 37 foot ketch with a diesel engine. They left Amerherst Island near Kingston, went down the Hudson and then traveled on the Intercoastal Waterway just like you have been doing with a few jaunts out in the Atlantic. They were constantly having engine problems. My dad is a fantastic mechanic but he couldn't discover what the problem was. They finally reached Florida and he was talking to a diesel mechanic and he said that they probably had bad fuel with algae growing in it. When my dad removed the intake pipe which had a strainer screen over the end of it, it was covered in algae. They emptied the take. Cleaned it. Remove the algae gunk from the screen and the engine never had a problem again.

FWIW, if you have engine/sail difficulties and want to make an inlet, call the nearest USCG on VHF. (They will often ask you to call back on cell phone if the radios are busy.) Tell them that you are not in distress, but need to confirm conditions in the inlet because you'll only have one shot at it. They sometimes will send a 44 boat, sometimes on it's way home, to tie alongside and bring you in. No charge, no penalty, they just want to make sure you get in safe. If they say "call seatow" all you've lost is a few minutes of time. The Coasties are incredible people.

This is interesting: www.cruisersforum.com/forums/f54/algae-x-magnet-and-fuel-filter-anyone-familiar-222432.html#post2954444 "Actually probably harm. I have had clogs twice in rough seas and both times guess where the clog happened. Yep, in the Algae-x. The material causing the clog had obviously passed up the fuel line to the Algae-x and had the unit not been there it would have likely made it all the way to the Racore where such a small amount of material would have caused no problems at all. My best advice... get rid of them."

Hi Taylor. engine bogged down in bad weather will be dirt in your fuel tank, we used double racor filter systems and a bypass on the commercial fishing boats, good idea to have 2 independent racors because when one clogs up switch over and if both clog you can bypass in emergency. when its bad weather it will stir up the sediment in the tank and block the filters, if your fuel tank has easy access and you have a bit of down time in winter it would be best to use the fuel up or remove it and give the tank a quick wipe out,do this inspection as a winter/yearly task,it doesn't take long and as someone else suggested get yourself some kind of mesh funnel to put in the filler pipe when taking fuel, this will catch 90% of the sediment. Last but not least always check the seal on your filler cap also as if this has a rubber gasket and that goes bad then it will let water /sea water in and contaminate the fuel. Also if i was you i would get a carpenter/friend to come and cut that engine cover and put it on catches so it can be fully removed if need be, at some point you will need to, it makes it much easier to do engine inspections/work. Any problems or advice needed just message or email, been around commercial fishing boats and offshore work all my life so learnt a bit ha ha, have a good day. cheers john.

Fighting a persistent coolant loss on my Catalina 34 (also new to me). I've replaced all the hoses and the thermostat and it is still there. I believe the next step is the exhaust flange at the back of the manifold. I feel for ya! It isn't much fun to spend all that time and money and still have the underlying problem. Here's to both of us and our persistent problems with the engine. May we both find the bottom sooner rather than later. Cheers Taylor.

In not sure how much experience you have with electrics you may have already tried this but you said that you were struggling to find where the wires went because they change colour. I see you have a multimeter already you used to check the battery voltage. My advice would be to set your multimeter to continuity setting place one of your leads on one side and the other lead you can add a wire too and go and probe all of the wires the other end. When and if it bleeps that will be the wire you want. Hope this helps.

If you are getting a lot of sediment in the filters you may need to get the tank polished. This will remove most of the sediment and will prevent further clogging. The good news is that you are using your engine frequently so you should not have a problem going forward.

Hey Taylor. I hope that you work out your engine issues. Your experience makes me think that if I get a boat, the first job should be to drain the diesel out and clean the tank. There seems to be crap lurking in your tank that gets stirred up with lots of motion. I love your mom’s voice, it’s quite unique and sounds like she could do very well in broadcasting. Well, podcasting these days. She seems very classy. You two are great together. Good luck, with your issues. By now you have probably tried your second alternator. It is possible that the brand new one has a factory defect with its voltage regulator. More likely it would be all the wire splicing that is causing trouble. Every connection is a potential problem.🇨🇦

Hi Taylor, someone has probably already meantioned this but I think it is important to say this so you not ends up in a bad situation where you realy need your engine. This problem you have with the engine failing on you, sounds for me that you have residues of some sort in the diesel tank. The reason I think that is because you experienced the problems at rough sea, wich makes the heavy particles beeing stired up when the boat is rolling, and therefor finding the way in to the engine. As you mentioned, you did change the fuelfilter for not long time ago and it is already cloged up, so thats also one indication on debris from the tank. Anyhow, I love your videos, and as a true sofa-sailor I will continue to follow you on your journey out on the seven seas.
