I’ve been boating my whole life. I’ve owned 4 boats in my lifetime. I cherish the time I get to be on the water and anyone who judges me for silly things like say line instead rope will never be welcome on my vessel. Let’s all have fun and get over our need to feel superior.

Another tip to add on getting your boat back on the trailer. It's better to use the winch strap than to throttle your boat onto the trailer. If for some reason you absolutely have to throttle your boat onto the trailer, make sure you have your emergency brake set on your vehicle. If you don't set the E brake, you are basically pressing your boat against the parked transmission of you're vehicle which can damage it. If the park in the transmission fails, the vehicle can roll freely and end up in the water. Rare but possible.

We only ever power it on unless it’s blowing an absolute Gail out something less like a super low tide. Usually takes us about 30 secs to drive the boat up, hook the winch and drive off. It usually has most people at the ramp scratching their heads 😂

Regardless of experience always help other boaters. Take in nice and slow. If you get into trouble worst thing is you might have to push off another boat. If that person gets pissed, and some will, he is an a-hole. Most boaters are very helpful.

A little extra knowledge here from a Marine Engineer. Rope is an actual nautical term. Rope is for lines without a "job". Its the material used to make a line.

I’ve been boating for about a decade, I can definitely relate to this video but I still only use the terms front, back, left and right because nobody else understands the proper terminology when they are on the boat.

I use left/ right /wall/door and floor door.....ive sailed with the navy fpr 6 months as part of an air detachment...nothing pisses the navy more than saying " down the floor door and by the wall to the left" lolll....

I use the appropriate terms, bow/stern/starboard/port/deck/helm/abeam when I’m looking for eye rolls from my wife and general confusion from any other passengers.

Boating on a lake compared to rivers and ocean , wind yes currents not relevant. Use the currents to your advantage. I have roller bunks for a Shawnee Deluxe, 20'6" Jon boat best decision ever . Trailer barely in the water. Trout fishing, White River Arkansas getting on the trailer with 6 generators running , you can tell the newbies putting it on the trailer. Lots of clueless rental boaters ,ugh. When the guys at the rental dock trust you to help , you're doing something right. I actually miss that part. I brought my rental back almost as clean as when I left. Everything ready to unload, trash collected and pull in nice and easy. That's something to cover rental boats and boaters.

@@MrNegative57 I don’t think you’re gonna have much of a problem with a 20 foot boat regardless of wind or current. There’s nothing there to push. And you can’t always use the current to your advantage.

Some of the worst offenders I’ve heard across the board are operators who always say “I’ve been boating all my life”. I have a neighbor with that attitude. We offered him and his wife a ride in our boat one time which he denied saying he doesn’t trust other drivers and that same weekend he tore off his lower unit on a rocky shoal even with a chart plotter and depth finder. Moron!

Well done. Ingress and Egress from the boat is also a CRITICAL aspect. Over the 55+ years I have been boating I have seen a large number of accidents when getting in or out of a boat and most of it is often due to the newbies not realizing the weight transfer or the FACT that boats MOVE in the water both before as well as DURING attempts to load and unload. Keep up the good posts!

Port and starboard are pretty important to avoid confusion. They are the sides of the boat in relation to the bow, not the direction of travel, a viewpoint, or anything else. Skipper is usually facing forward, but crew is often facing to the rear or sides, so when used properly they preserve accurate communication.

Skiers call similar lookers left or lookers right. Facing a mountain lookers left would be the right for the one skiing.

Regarding speed when maneuvering around other boats or docking, don’t drive any faster than you are willing to hit something.

Love your videos! You inspired me that THIS is the year when I finally tie a proper cleat hitch to the dock! every time I always had a pile of rope wrapped 50 times around the post or cleat. With decades of boating under my belt and being of Canadian codfishing heritage, I should have been much more embarrassed than I was of that mess. I can tie at least 10 different very fancy fishing knots from memory but never learned the basic cleat hitch. Now I got it.

2020 was our first year boating. Guilty on the fenders. I think it was 4 outings before they were off as we backed off the dock. We did get better at talking them off closer to the dock those 4 times😀. That first time was a long way down the lake before we noticed. Too excited I guess. The biggie I didn’t do was prep on the ramp. Somehow that made sense to even this newb!

Yeah I agree with the prep part. I think it is more of a discourtesy from someone. I have seen even experienced boat owners do this. Just because you have owned a boat for a long time doesn't change you from being an ass if you already are. Common courtesy, especially if there is a line of people waiting.

Like I've said in another comments. It was decades ago I worked the fuel dock at a small Midwestern lake. The terminology lesson would have been brushed off and everyone would have laughed at the person making fun of them. I think that proper terminology would only be expected along coastal areas. That pic of the boat with the bow through the roof reminded me that exactly that happened, not on my shift thankfully. The fuel dock was built really high to prevent it being flooded. It had a small area that was normally just above the water but when it really rained it would be covered but there was a ladder from it to the main dock where the fuel pump was mounted. This guy was dropping a friend off but the boat started drifting away, he put it in gear and *tried* to blip the throttle and did pretty much the same thing. The ladder and a few other things were torn up. The scary part was a child flew out of the boat and went between the supports under the dock, thankfully the child was uninjured and wearing a life jacket. Before I started this job, I'd never been around boats but I quickly caught on to who was experienced and who was not. I'd learned by the time this incident occurred not to touch the throttle in this situation. Another tip I don't know if this is still pertinent but this lakes rental dock slips didn't float. During a very bad storm the level of the lake rose alot. A small two seater speed boat sunk because it couldn't rise with the level of the lake, tied so it wouldn't scrape the dock. So newbies should be aware when tied to a stationary dock in a small lake what can happen if storms come through and dump alot of rain in a short amout of time.

The no wake zone is a BIG pet peeve of mine !! Especially the one near my local ramp. People will fly past it and send boats rocking all over the place while your trying to load/unload your boat...

It usually starts at the ramp when you see the person backing up the trailer and jackknifing left and right and then stopping in the middle of the ramp to get out and take a look at the trailer with a confused look on their face.

In my MANY years of boating experience, the biggest as* holes in the world WILL be found at boat ramps... The couple that park on the ramp for an hour to load two kayaks. The jerk that spends two or more hours with his boat on the trailer in the water working on it. ( too cheap to buy mouse ears). The dude that wants to fish on the ramp and is ready to fight you if you ask hit to move.... ON & ON!! ...... P.S. I have had everything from twin hydroplane to large sail & houseboats... I have NEVER bought a fender!!! Always just find them floating or washed up in a cove.

@@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon its simple.. just stay away from boaters period. i mean if ima just go test ruun my boat for performance purposes , i dont do it around other boaters that are fishing. its that simple. same common courtesy as out on the road. Just the same as you dont try and time a quarter mile in a neighborhood. some ppl just lack etiquette period.

Great video. f I would say things like "Deck" Starboard and port side" It would sound pretentious, and my friends and family would laugh at me. I was forced to learn to back up with my mirrors as apposed to looking over my shoulder, and it was embarrassing for me at the boat launches at first. Have everything ready to go, but at the same time take your time when backing. When backing in difficult places....have a spotter behind the boat who you can see in the mirror.

Also gotta pay homage to skeg draggers. You know the ones. Draggin that skeg all the way up the ramp and straight in to the parking lot. Or the ones that fire up that motor before it ever touches water, then wonder why they blew a powerhead.

Which also brings up another point. Why every console driven boat, I/O or outboard, doesn't come with a water pressure gauge. I'd rather see water pressure than some inaccurate speedometer.

My second time out, I smaked a fender off on the dock, and then later ran aground on sand in Mystery Bay WA. How's that for the learning curve? I did name my boat "Adventress".

My grandfather, at one point was the oldest living certified sea captain and he called the fenders bumpers the real issue is snobby people

I live on a river and there is no out of gear when docking, you come in hot!!! If you don’t the current is going to take you. When I started boating my buddy taught me this and there is so many times we see people trying to dock and they simply can’t because they are going far too slow and the current takes them immediately. The key on this river to docking is keep the throttle on.

All depends..river where im at, and the launch setup...i come in at idle, kick out of gear 10' from the dock and just let it drift in place....its all about your speed relative to the dock as you come in...however, at the cabin the river is fast and you have to come in hot...all depends on the situation

@@Maynardd and I will say there are some boat ramps that are just placed in the wrong part of the river where the current just naturally flows stronger on the outer Bend of the river where the undertow is very Swift and then they want to put a boat ramp in a dock there I have discovered several of those ramps along the Ohio River usually when I find the sweet spot 2 launch maybe only a dozen people may launch in the course of a day. I tell no one where I launch lol, versus 100 sunseekers trying to launch at the same time 85% don't know what they're doing. Much less can't back the trailer let alone doc a boat I don't have patience along with anger issues to deal with people like that. I can usually have my boat launch docked truck trailer park between 7 to 9 minutes by myself same goes for loading the boat when coming back in

Although I will say I have had to do an Ace Ventura doc between two 30 +ft cigarette boats trying to dock boss I slid my 18ft open bow right in between them without banging the doc or hitting their boats they couldn't believe my maneuver I laughed all the way up to my truck had my boat out of the way and on the trailer before their boats were even untied from the

New boaters usually don't know how or when to go with or against the current/wind. These natural movements can be a blessing or curse.

Not having lines ready...everyone frantically scurrying about grabbing lines at the dock and trying to figure out what to do with them. There's the in gear guy at the ramp trying to grab her dock while the prop is still marching forward. And of course the one line tied to one dock cleat guy and as he walks to the truck the boat stern or bow swings out or even a 180. And the drive the boat up "snug" on the trailer guy who proceeds to overshoot and the bow slowly shamefully slides back down the roller to where it should be. And the passengers sticking their hands out during a speedy dock approach crew, crushing a few fingers. How about the tie to a marker pole in the middle of the waterway guy!?...yea I've witnessed that. And the tide forgetful guy who boldly smashes his hull up on a high tide island edge and walks off to come back to his entire boat being beached as the tide dropped 2ft since he walked off. And the super high trim bow 7ft in the air guy going 6mph throwing a 4ft wake on an 18ft cc. I'm sure I got more from just this past week lol. And for a plot shocker...I've done at least half of these 30+ years ago when I started so no judgment, just a good chuckle. One time I really messed up super embarrassingly bad when i....nah I ain't giving y'all that. Peace

Backing up before I even watch the video backing up to the boat launch can’t keep their trailers straight loading their coolers in their stuff at the dock not knowing where to clean their boat out parking back in the back up spot so you can’t get your boat, Warren Street picked up into me the number one thing that says your new boater. Don’t understand slow no wake

I spent 20 years in the Coast Guard and we had to know terminology, it was important. I get it, rec boaters don’t have to but I believe everyone should know some basic terminology in things they’re wanting to be part of. Just my opinion though.

I had a hard time getting the boat back on the trailer yesterday. Wind kept blowing me crooked. But I got the front in and gave it some gas and the trailer straightened it out.

Many times the wind or current won't allow me two head on my trailer straight so I leave 6 to 10 in of my Runner out of the water it allows me to make contact with the the bunk board allowing me to slowly straighten the boat properly and easing it up on the last two rollers and to my cradle just leave me two cranks to the winch Easy Does It

8:54 yeah, the feet dangling one is so bad. I saw this family who was letting their kid basically hang completely off the bow, and they were hitting some pretty good sized rollers. Fast. Luckily he didn’t fall off, but if he did, he’d have been destroyed by their propellors, it was a boat with 2 outboards. Hopefully no one lets anyone in their boat do what he did.

I dont know why but it pisses me off when i see new boaters with their bumpers out, right or left side, its annoying. Rope could break. As soon as im away from the dock i always put my bumpers under the floor but not too close to the inboard motor so they dont melt. as soon as im away from the dock so no one trips..

Had a drunken dock episode years ago with my friend in his boat. Dude slammed it in reverse by accident, and to compensate he slammed it forward and ended up pushing the bow up against the dock, lifting out of the water. Marina owner just watching us shaking his head.

Another dead giveaway of a newbie from a distance is the lack of proper trim on the vessel. See lots of these Weekend Wally's with the trim all the way in even with the bow full of kiddo's. Huge bow spray and nose-down attitude is evidence of a newbie all the way.

0:57 I hate this one. I explained to my wife, who rides horses, it's kind of like putting on the horse's bridle over the halter but even worse, leaving the lead rope trailing on the ground and putting the saddle on over the fly sheet.

how about puting your boat at the entres of the lock wen your 1 of the first to enter pls peopole move forward so evry 1 can go in the lock also understand that sailboats whit outboard cant com in as fast as a moterboat sins it in genral take them longer to slow down and if it has its mast back in like 45% ore more becas day need to get under a brige pls try not to make giant waves becase the guy standing in the fron of the boat whit that line in his hands is holding that mast ther and those things are hevy and long so if it start bouncing day need to catch that momentum and yes peopole have died becase some a hole did ignore this and just went past them whit huge waves

I think Captain Matt might worry too much about what people think of him. Yes, its a fact of life that inexperienced people are sometimes easy to spot. And so what? They're learning. They'll eventually get it right with experience just like everyone else did. Nothing to get your panties in a twist over, but if they're doing something dangerous, just let them know.

I can always tell a newbie by where they fly their flags. The American Flag or yachting ensign NEVER should fly from the jack-staff on the bow. But that's where the "dealership" (a term that in itself makes me wince) put it....

I had a fender once that caught water and smack me in the face during cruise when I was around 8. It hurt. At 54, wanna guess what I always double check at launch? 😉

Actual question on the USCG Master license test at one time; What makes the starboard navigation light red A) the lens B) the bulb C) could be either D) none of the above The answer is D none of the above. The starboard running light is green.

@@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon I was forewarned about that specific question some 25 years ago or else I probably would have got it wrong too. It has since been removed. Well, I’m off to NOLA tomorrow to catch a boat. Trading in my captain’s hat for Chief’s overalls. Should be decent boating weather up north when I get off in a month.

Slow no wake means slow no wake that’s the biggest thing. New motors need to learn and if you got $100,000 boat that doesn’t mean you get to treat everybody else’s boat rough because you got a big expensive boat ain’t you important

Locally here we call new voters and then we can warriors there’s several different names you can always tell when it’s a weekend warrior or a new boulder cause I’ll be cleaning your boat out at the dock or the whole straight ahead and park in the back up area and clean your boat out

When people use the word rope . And a go to gas gas up The only rope on a boat is the bell rope . And you don't gas up , you fuel up . You gas up a car you fuel up a boat or aeroplane .

I would have thought calling yourself "captain" would be on the list. Captain being more generally intended for someone commanding a ship. Most boat "captains" would be more accurately referred to as "skipper"

The expression that truly irritates me is front or back of a boat/ship etc instead of fore and aft. If referring to anything at sea why not use the correct long used/evolved term,?

Bow and stern refer to locations in the boat. The front of the boat is the bow. The back is the stern. Forward and aft are directions on the boat. You can be forward or aft of something else on the boat or can look forward or look aft. Abaft and astern can also be used instead of aft but are generally reserved for stuff outside the boat. Abaft specifically is for something within the length of the boat while astern is for something behind the whole boat. You might say “make your turn when the edge of the dock is just abaft the beam” or “the jet skier is crossing astern.” And while we’re on it, anything off ship and in front of you should be referred to in degrees or points off the bow. A point is 1/32 of a circle. There are 16 points forward of the beam, 8 to port and 8 to starboard. And 8 points off the bow isn’t realistic because then you would say abeam. So a buoy could be 5 points off the starboard bow. So I think unless you’re talking to someone who’s really fluent it makes the most sense to just get your point across in plain English.

I never knew what a shit show the boat ramp can be. It seems like the biggest debacle with lots of chances of failure or a sunken video. I'm fascinated by Chit Show channel & cannot believe the fiasco people go through to get their boat in the water & then out of the water. I only had a boat once which was kept at a marina so it was easy peasey pulling out of and backing into the slip.

@@BoatBuyersSecretWeapon the content plugs for your product, the always present banner across the bottom and the watermark you put over most pictures makes it very hard to watch. Feels like 3am tv from the 90s. While you do have good info I skip most of your videos for this reason.

Another newbie one. A rope attached to the bow somewhere to use when launching the boat. Instead of driving it off and parking it they push it off and then try to walk it over to the dock or beach. Takes forever and they are usually clamouring over the trailer.

The bad behavior is not so much new boaters but simply idiots. I was a new boater once, but didn't do any of those awful behaviors. And damn! That photo on the water sports segment is so glassy! I wish my local lake could be like that. Why doesn't anyone water ski anymore?

I still get out at least once a year to prove I can do it... but everyone's moved to wake boarding or surfing. Nothing like making a few strong cuts back and forth, throwing that big spray and crossing the wakes!

It can matter, if you ask the boat yard to repair the floor, they will repair the floor which is NOT the deck or sole.

@@robertusa1234 Dock space is pretty limited most places I visit, and is intended just for picking up or dropping off your driver. Anyone foolish enough to tie off will probably end up with their boat on the beach.

Advice for newbie boaters: forget what you heard on this video. Take a US Coast Guard approved boating safety course and a boating course. Don’t get caught up trying to learn boating terminology. The most important thing you need to remember is to be safe and take it slow. Don’t care what people think if you are a newbie. You are the one responsible for damages to your boat and trailer. Don’t make a costly mistake because you want to rush or try to look like you know what you doing, if you need help, ask someone. It’s better and cheaper looking like a newbie than doing something that will cost you. And lastly as repeated earlier, please take the boater’s safety course and boating course. Most of these video on KZfaq have good information and helpful but some of it are opinionated and from people who think they know it all.

Sorry, but proper boating terms are a good thing to practice. When you're a newbie it's understandable to not know all the terms. BUT, if your a seasoned boater or a true captain, you use the proper terms.

I've owned my boat for 25 years. I've yet to worry about saying port, starboard, stern or bow when I'm out on the lake. I've repowered twice, going from a Volvo 290 with a 350, building the 350 into a 383 stroker with a blower, and recently going completely through the boat replacing the stringers, the deck and having the transom reworked to change from the Volvo outdrive to a bravo one and replacing the stroker with a 525SC. I had a captain's call exhaust system installed and external hydraulic assist steering. The person that did all the fiberglass, deck work and gel coating builds the hulls for Helix boats. www.helixboat.com/ During this process the term floor was used just as much as deck, drivers side and passenger side was used just as much as port and starboard. I'm a third generation tile contractor. My margin trowel is a pointer, I float walls instead of installing a brown coat. Thinset, mastic is pookie, dry pack , deck mud and fat mud are not proper terms. I floated vanities and countertops until I became a union setter in California for a few years. Then I floated pullmans and decks. The union boys were big on proper terms. I started with a union shop as a journeyman. They had 50 crews when I started. They grew to 150 crews and dropped to 3 journeyman installers and two journeyman finishers. This tile setter with his pointer was one of the three journeyman installers left when California went into a recession in the early 90's. Terminology does not make anyone better. Common sense does more to make you proficient at whatever your profession is.
