Great video. I would add: -No glass containers at all. No excuses. -When cruising along and changing direction, look more than 90deg; look all the way back as there may be a much faster boat approaching to overtake and you could be pulling in front of it. -When overtaking a slower boat, don’t pass right near it. Give plenty of room so you don’t rock him with your wake AND prepare for him to suddenly turn into you. People don’t look before they turn. -When cruising on a river or other type waterway, stay to the right of center, just like driving a car. Too often, people just take the shortest route, even if it is down the left side or cutting around points, into oncoming traffic. -When cruising along, pick a bearing and hold it until time to turn to a new bearing. People zig zag along and other boats don’t know their intention. Hold your line. -Like driving a car, the rules of the road should be followed, BUT the top rule of all is that everybody has a responsibility to avoid a collision. If you do the right thing, by the rules, and a collision seems imminent, do whatever is needed to avoid it, period. Again, great video and thanks for putting the time into it.

Wow - an excellent summary of how a courteous boater should behave. So many great points - the best of which is the "360 degree" awareness. This requires deliberate focus and attention. People need to realize that they are not just the "host" or the guy who happens to own the boat when you take people out - you are a captain! This is a serious responsibility and needs to be treated as such. If only people would obey the basic rules you outlined, the water would be a much safer and friendlier place. And I'm totally with you on the trash issue. I am a state environmental crime investigator here in MA. People who toss their trash in a waterway or leave it on an island drives me nuts. Completely unacceptable. It's all about respect. For the environment, and for your fellow boater.

Your suggestions for towing people is most help and should be heard by everyone that wants to tow someone on a tube because 6 years ago I was fish on a 14' John baot with a 6hp motor and had some fool pulling a tube all around me making such big waves it wasn't allowing me to make any headway and almost capsize by boat

It's probably old fashioned now but I learned that when overtaking another (slower) boat and you can't pass on the left and decide to pass on their right, give them a couple of beeps of the horn once you're in position to pass so they know you're there. *edit Even though it's been covered: We have a house on a decent sized river. We have a boat dock. This past weekend, there was a powerboat running 70% throttle, the wrong way on the wrong side of the river, and maybe 30 ft. from my boat dock (and others). I'm a really tolerant person, but he got the double bird from me. Of course, a person who does that is probably never going to watch a video about boating etiquette...

As I've indicated before I've had limited access to boats but have always obeyed the no wake zones and used as much common sense as possible. With all that said even with my limited experience, I've never had to deal with a lot of what you've described. Even though I"ll most likely never be on another boat, I'll definitely be keeping all this information filed away in memory. Good stuff here. Keep up the good work, the more new and even some veteran boaters listen to you, the safer we'll all be and have that much more fun. Ignoring all this good advice could lead to damaged boats and equipment at the very least or a seriously injured or dead skier. Any of the above would ruin a lot of peoples weekend getaways.

My biggest complaint at the ramp is people leaving their truck headlights on at night making it impossible to see when I back up. Most of the ramps I use are narrow and have two lanes side by side. I've had several instances where I had to wait for someone to leave completely because I just couldn't see the open slot to back up.

Thank you for this video I'm a new boater. I was thinking about mounting a small light bar on my T Top. Not doing it now I will just get a small spot light for emergencies. Also I didn't know running deck lights at night while underway was a no no. I have much to learn I'm still a nervous wreck about just getting down the ramp even though I have done a decent job of it a few times. It's not the backing up it's the people watching and waiting that puts the pressure on you. The first boat I bought was nice but the engine was tired and didn't run well at idle speed so I docked it okay once and hit the dock the second because it stalled. I'm going to need to practice slow maneuvering and anticipating wind and currents. I'm terrified of the thought of trying to dock at a crowded dock 😂 not happening until I get a lot better. I will stick to daytime boating on the least crowded lake I can find and learn how to maneuver my boat slowly and make it do what I want. I already learned to steer before you gear from a great video on docking. Then there's the joy of re trailering it😂

Great video! I slightly disagree with the fan when fueling, though. The boat should have the fan on the "outlet" side pulling from the bilge and coming out on the same side as the fuel fill. The intake should be on the opposite side. Best to keep the fan going and be able to start the boat right away instead of waiting. That said, totally agree with opening the hatch when fueling if possible.

I've grown up with being on boats until about my 20s. I'm almost 40 and finally become a pontoon boat owner. I was nervous as heck at first. But, just like riding a bike. I remembered all my younger years of training with my uncles in the marsh and lakes. I want to run it at night but I don't have effective night running lights just yet, besides the legal ones. Any recommendations for night running lights?

I run a “Murphy” light which is basically an aircraft bulb. I whole hardly disagree with running a spot light. The problem of visibility only occurs when passing another vessel. The only time a spotlight is illegal is when shinning for game. Most fisherman with etiquette turn off light while passing then when safe return to on. The visibility distraction is minor compared to floating unseen dangers in the water.

My boat slip at the marina is near the boat ramp. I see all the things you just mentioned but of all of it the most upsetting things is adults allowing their kids do dangerous things. One common is sitting on the front with their feet hanging off the bow especially on a pontoon. Should they go off the front of a pontoon there is only one direction they will go and that’s straight to the engine. I did see this happen and a foot had to be amputated. Children don’t know any better and often end up being a victim of their parents ignorance. Making a wake anywhere is your responsibility if it damages docks or boats.

New England mostly Tugboats and passenger vessels as my job but I also have a 25 ft CC as a pleasure boat and the biggest issue with recreational boaters is they don’t use the radio it doesn’t matter if your on a ship or a skiff if there’s any doubt call the other vessel not expecting much from recreational vessels but a quick call on 13 if there’s any question is the right thing to do it only takes a couple seconds to call someone and make passing arrangements

biggest pet peeve is people who think they own the water. Just because no speed limit doesn't mean you can go as fast as you want at all times. Please be mindful for smaller boats and esp kayakers with wake. I wish larger boats would cross behind smaller boats regardless of who has the right of way. We have a 20' so not small by any means but there are a LOT of boats out there way bigger than ours that put off a big wake. They cross right in front and then we have to slow down for their wake before we can get our speed back up. When I see a smaller boat out there, I cross behind regardless if I have the right of way. A sailboat friend of ours says when they are under sail, it's courteous for powerboats to cross behind so we try to do that too.

Never pull up to a dock, any faster than you want to hit it. Watersports boats only back up in one direction ( unless you throttle up ) . Talk to your skier or boarder or surfer , use hand signals to indicate when you're done, we pat top of the head , drivers points to the water on which side ( drivers starboard preferred ) learn to slow the boat and the skier can pull up and drop right next to the boat. Doesn't leave the person exposed at all ,no long swim. Pull the rope in , next person takes the handle with them , saves time and effort. If they fall ,cut power and immediately head back, pull up with them on the starboard side , pull in the rope and hand it to them. No circling around. If a jet ski wants to jump the wake with a person being towed , stop. Take away the wake and they go away. Just because you have the right away doesn't mean the other boat knows or cares. Be responsible for your safety. Last Rule applies to a whole lot of Boaters Just because you can , Doesn't Mean You Should . Just because you can afford a boat , doesn't mean you should. Be realistic with your abilities.

Definitely don't leave your truck and trailer tying up a launch ramp while you're shooting across the river or lake on your boat. Park your truck and trailer unless you want to come back and have to call a tow truck to come pull it back up out of the water. Because someone will come along and bust your window and put it in neutral and let it roll down the ramp into the water just to spite you for pulling that shit. You'll also be lucky if he doesn't reach up under your engine and poke holes in your oil pan. I've seen people do some pretty Fed up shit to people's stuff that do shit like that.

I had some guys pass me in a little speed boat and I was trolling, They passed behind me about 20 feet away. I started yelling that there were fishing lines, and must have sounded aggressive, because they then came up close, yelling and abusing me after cutting they cut 2 $30 lures off my line. Then things escalated really quickly, and one of the guys ripped his shirt off, without word of a lie lol and wanted to fight me.🤣Im 6'5, and about140kg of pure muscle fat🤣🤣. Not that size matters, but it helps. Anyway, I told him that Im sure he would tear me apart, and I really don't want you to embarress me infront of my wife. The other 2 guys laughed and told him to sit down and shut up. They Ended up offering to pay for the lures, which of course I declined, especially since I exaggerated the cost of my cheap arse lures🤣. They did insist I took a six pack of beer though and somehow things de-escalated and we went our seperate ways. It could have gone really badly, but instead I got a sixpack and a great yarn. If you were the guys from that day 2 years ago on Lake Maquarie , NSW, please say g'day. Unless you are the one that took your shirt off, you can just stay away from me please, Im still scared of you🤣🤣🤣

You are correct that kayaks, canoes, paddleboards, rowboats have ultimate right of way. DOT designated "vessels of restricted maneuverability." However full throttle sends massive waves. The regulations say slow down. And as a kayak nature guide as well as a boat owner I can tell you that big wakes from slowing down is nothing we encounter unless the slowing down is close quarters. Small hand powered craft operators prefer that you slow down when passing and also give it some distance before you gun up the throttle again after passing. Otherwise it just swamps the smaller craft unless the person knows how to minimize the wake impact. But even then you often still get swamping. The regulations say slow down. If you do it far enough back the waves are never an issue. I'd stick with that. I slow for them in my other boat. It makes a big difference, and they will appreciate it.

Lloyd Henry, I have been searching in our area too, Boat Us offers on water training in Sarasota and Lake Ocheechobee both within 3-4 hrs from Jacksonville, I called St Augustine to see if Boat Us there also offers it, and they said maybe in the fall when their captains aren't so busy. So grateful to have found these videos (and Best Captain On the Water course) I have learned so much already and already feel so much more comfortable!

you forgot a good 1... Divers... Free or scuba, Boaters, Please respect dive flags and floats! PLEASE!!! Divers get injured or killed when you're not paying attention and run over us. And also, don't come next to the float/flag to check us out. If someone's spearfishing and you run right up on their float, you'll scare away their fish, you can run over them with your boat's hull or ,worse case, cut them to pieces with your props... Can't tell you how scary it is to see a boat's prop inches from your eyeball

If you are noisy in a theater. Play loud music with a subwoofer. Throw trash on the ground. Never cleaned the windows in your car or wash it. Have a temper. Are impatient. Are a loud alcoholic. Like to go fast all the time. Are a bad car driver. Can't back up a trailer. The kind of person the neighbors complain about; Please don't buy a boat- stay off the water and let we who love the outdoors and appreciate getting away from people like you so we can enjoy the beauty and quiet of the water and do our thing!

If someone is offended by someone else's music it is a them problem. Figure out why you are offended by something that does not matter in the grand scheme of things and grow up. Respectful is not being a dick and thinking you have some right to restrict someone else's freedom. If you do not like their music turn yours on or move???

That statement makes you sound like an A-hole! I have young kids and have had a boat pull up next to us in a cove blasting music with obscene lyrics. Know the difference between freedom and respect! Disrespectful people cause freedoms to be taken away!
