BoatFools Top Sailboats For Sale in Washington for Under $35k! And we found some really great boats! In fact it was difficult narrowing down the field to 10. Canadian Ken, who spent several years out in Seattle, and I go head-to-head over which of our selected boats is the best and it was photo finish as to which sailboat was the victor.
These top sailboats for sale in Washington State for under $35k are sweet and you could be out pursuing your sailing dreams before you know it. Don't listen to all of the BS about spending a fortune in order to enjoy sailing. My buddy, Cape Dory Carlton, spent $9k on his awesome Cape Dory 7 years ago and, in addition to annual upkeep, has only purchased a new dodger over that time - and he sails more than anyone I know (anyone with a job, that is - which means most of us..). Sellers are getting anxious. Deals are in the offing! And if you live in the Pacific Northwest or in Washington State, any one of these boats might be ideal for you. Any one of these sailboats would be perfect for day sailing, some weekend overnights, and some could even take you just about anywhere you'd want to go. All of these boats are very cool!
Due to the length of these videos, we rated our top six and had four honorable mentions. Here are the links to the listings. Please note that we have no financial interest in any of these boats. Just sharing the information! And please contact us if you have any questions about any of these boats - happy to share our thoughts:

Wow I bought that Jason 35 from an estate sale, the owner passed away. It was an unfinished boat. I finished the interior off and put a black walnut and epoxy sole in it. She had a big aluminum hydraulic windless on the fore deck, I took that out and added a bronze manual windless and lots more. I eventually sold it to a man from Squamish who never used it but lived on it in Nanaimo, Vancouver island for years. A good boat but it had an original Volvo MB2 that was tired.

Wow! You found a pocket cruiser with a comfort ratio over 30, but it didn't make the top three. I think that might have been my favorite this time around. Those 50's and 60's boats are nice to look at, but i would find it difficult to take the chance on them. As usual another great episode!

The Jason and the Vancouver are the only two boats on this episode I'd put to sea in. Multiple Vancouver 27's have circumnavigated and much more. I've sailed a GRP H30. It was so tender that when I stepped off the dock onto the caprail it felt like I was going to put the rail under.

The Townsend looks somewhat like a Cape George vessel, which were made in Port Townsend. The Jason was my favorite but I'd need a quarter birth. The Vancouver is perfect, but small and expensive (to me). I think it would be interesting to do an episode on buying sailboats in the Vancouver, BC area. There are many well priced boats in the islands and inlets up there, and it would be nice to learn about the challenges of importing a Canadian vessel into US waters.

Totally agree with you re: the Townsend and Cape George. Since Ken is from Canada, we do plan on exploring the Canadian coastlines - ocean and lake - to see what’s out there and what’s involved bringing a boat back to the states. Should be fun. Thanks for your comments and for watching!

I think the Jason was also the top pick (though the Morgan looked good too). Miller Marine sold them either factory finished - or as a kit - so the homebuilt boats varied in quality. There is a Jason here at Annapolis that looks quite salty except some bleaching of the gelcoat - they are handsome boats. As others on this thread have pointed out, the Vancouver 27s were high quality builds and would make a good boat for a singlehander.

Glad to see you spend some more time on the West Coast, although my heart is still in New England. You picked out some rather unloved boats there, but it's tough when you are limited to $35,000 or less. If you are not familiar you should check out "Life is Like Sailing", for the most chill, low drama YT channel. He sails a 1979 Hans Christian Ketch which he maintains to the highest standard. He sometimes sails with his signigicant other who is equally cool. I don't think he has ever left the shelter of Vancouver and San Juan Islands and nothing ever happens but it's a great stress reliever!

the pacific has some of the best sailing in the world, ask anyone who has circumvented the northwest passage... ANYONE only thing even remotely close is the Philippine islands, however, you will NEVER see the filipino islands covered in white . . . so you can tour the northwest passage in ALL FOUR seasons and get 4 different looks not accounting for super low tides and super hi tides, the Philippine islands so forth you get one season, nice but if you want tropical it does reach 100 degrees in the passage several times a years so you can get a temperate rain forest in tropical temps, also the amount of daylight is crazy in teh northwest, sun up 5 am sunset 10 pm summer equinox, so hot, long days, and like triple tides if not quads in the daylight hours, I worked boats in the northwest as a kid and remember experiencing 2 hi tides in the daytime one low or vice versa, 2 lows 1 high.. just depends, then you get super low or super high tides as well so . . . also you cannot catch mega local monster king salmon in the south chyna or celebs seas..

Everyone of these boats should be priced at under $20,000 USD! There is no way anyone should pay more, they're tired, old and taking up space. As you know there are 100's of tired, old boats available out there now, and owners want to get rid of them because it is costing them to keep them. A shopper today could go up to the Seattle area and practically pick from hundred's of good 30-40' boats, where the owners are desperate to sell, for under $20,000!
@Morrisfactor
@Morrisfactor 7 ай бұрын
@captbuzz - I've lived in Seattle for over 70 years - there are NOT hundreds of good 30-40 boats for under $20K. By virtue of being stuck in the corner of the Pacific Northwest, it is expensive to truck in good boats - and sailing them up the coast is a long and dangerous process (most northern bound boats do a triangular voyage via Hawaii and Vancouver, BC.). Therefore, the sailboat selection is limited and keeps the selling prices rather high - the highest in the continental USA. (I agree they are often too high). The eco warriors of the state have prevented any new marinas from being constructed since 1991, when the Elliot Bay Marina opened after 17 years in the planning and permit process - despite the state's population more than doubling in that time span. This means moorage slips are nearly impossible to find. There are, however, a fair amount of smaller 22 - 29' foot sailboats which are for sail cheap, as most people want larger boats (ie: power boats).

@@MorrisfactorI do understand the area, I sailed up and around the San Juan's, Puget Sound, BC, etc. back in the '80's, great sailing, wonderful area. Yes, maybe a little over exaggerated of 100's there, but the point is the whole of the market is saturated with 30-40' boats available needing new owners, it's a buyers market. None of those presented are worth more than $20k, and I would bet that if a buyer was really interested in purchasing one of them, they wouldn't pay more than that.
@boatfools
@boatfools 6 ай бұрын
Agreed. Everyone needs to remember that the prices listed are just asking prices. No one should pay full price. And it is a buyer's market. Paying $5k, $10k, $15k less than the asking price wouldn't surprise me in the least. And if the boat has been on the market for awhile, that will be even more likely. The value of the boat is what someone is willing to pay for it - and what a seller is willing to sell it for, aka, fair market value. Until that moment happens the asking price is just that - and nothing more.

The Vancouver series is a Robert B Harris designed blue water capable cruisers,designed with a couple in mind. Built for offshore and very seaworthy. Just a very well founded design and has a stellar reputation. Robert B Harris was also a multi hull designer There is currently a Vancouver 27 in Mexico for sale for 14500, not as skookum as the one featured but the same robust build..Enjoying your videos,Thanks..The older boats are fun to see and the fact is many of them are built like the proverbial brick s..t house..that’s why there still around and sailing!!
