Boatmaker blends math & craft in his hanging treehouse spheres

Ever since seeing Jacques Cousteau emerge from a globular bathyscaphe, Tom Chudleigh has been fascinated by spheres. A few decades ago he designed an orb-shaped houseboat and began building a prototype, only to decide it would work better hung in a tree. After a successful summer sleeping in the dangling globe as on-site housing for a construction job, Chudleigh began to rent it to out for overnight stays.
Today, he has four suspended spheres at his Free Spirit Resort on Vancouver Island (British Columbia, Canada) where guests can spend a night or two swaying in the forest, 15 feet off the ground. Each sphere is suspended between three trees (with three nearly vertical ropes) and accessed by a spiral staircase. With whimsical names like Eryn, Eve, Luna, and Melody, the tree bubbles have been compared to Ewok and Hobbit housing and are booked months in advance.
It took him about 2000 hours just to create the wooden shell for his first build, Eve. He has since switched to fiberglass construction which takes about a week to create. Before devoting his time to spherical construction Chudleigh built and lived on sailboats and even learned to do his own metal forging while building a boat in a remote town near the Alaska border.
He applied his diverse crafting experience to his sphere construction creating custom four-latch, curved oblong doors and forging double-articulated window latches. Chudleigh continues to build and sell spheres to treehouse fans around the world.
Chudleigh’s designs were inspired by nature. “The spherical nut shape is certainly well adapted to life in the forest,” he explains on the website. “The suspension concept also reflects biomimicry. The network or web of ropes used to tether the sphere vertically and laterally function much like a spider web… The supporting web also mirrors our connectedness to our eco-system.”

@@pamdenton2527 The knowledge that there are different levels to material ethics is lost in the 21st Century. Society is in regression when we can't conceive of managed tree farms, the durability of material, and what happens to said material after it has been used. Here we are unable to research our questions even with the resource delivering instant information right under our fingertips. 20 years ago we had to leave our homes and trek great distances to libraries across town to find answers to our questions. Now with the internet we are even more lost. This deserves a video in and of itself.

I have watched every single one of your videos Kirsten and without a doubt this is my absolute favorite. I am blown away. This man is a genius. Not just because of his skills-which I understand others may have-but because of his vision. I could sit and listen to him talk for hours. Then I would just want to sit quietly in his workshop and watch him work. It looks like these are only available to stay in over the summer. I went on their web site to check out cost and availability, and rentals are only available about 4 months of the year. I just was so inspired by the photo of the winter and his talk of how cozy it is to be inside when the snow is falling outside. I had a daydream of being curled up by the window with a hot cup of tea, while the snow falls gently outside and clings to the trees. You would feel ten million miles away from the rest of the world at that moment.

Awesome! I love that he also understands the truth that the trees communicate with each other and also feel and react to what is going on on, in, and around them and each other. It is like a bio collective conscience. I always seemed to know that but never could share in a way that other folks could understand. That is until I read the book called Secret Life of Plants. I then began experimenting to see how the biochemical conscience works. How they think and react.

I absolutely love that , I live on a small sailboat , I could live in that I always thought houses should be built in the shape of sphere's or domes less wind resistance especially in places that have a lot of hurricane 's 👍🏼 like where I live in Florida . He is so talented beautiful artistry.👍🏼⚓️😎🌴⛵️that man is a genius ❗️
