That tacking history in an enclosed channel with fishing obstacles that would be illegal in most parts of the world is ample evidence of that alone. That also takes a serious amount of confidence and bravery when you are aware that you lack an aux engine to support you if you munt it all up.
@jims533810 ай бұрын
As someone who has to short tack a lot in a river channel, you frequently underplay the serious sailing skills you have Sam! You inspire me to keep frequently sailing "like I don't have a motor" so when the day comes I can hopefully handle it at least close to as well as you do. Fair winds and following seas. (Especially right now, LOL!)

I've worked on boatyards. Very rarery were we so busy that we couldn't help someone with damaged propeller or rudder the same day. All you needed was a lift up and I'm sure Pickled Herring would have fitted somewhere in the yard, obviouslythere was space. No - the reason you weren't helped was the boatyard primadonnas who usually work with superyachts and think they are too good to you (and probably are accustomed to overcharging).

Pretty much spot on, I go in with one of two approaches, either I start insulting them and tell them not to be so f’ing greedy all the time, always smiling and half kidding though, or I go asking for a favour, please, please, please, again always with a smile. Being playfully rude seems to work the best for some reason. I also have beer for them as well.

What you're doing here Sam is incredibly impressive. One thing is tacking a million times and docking simply by sails, but that you're able to keep your shit together when they turn away from what's planned is absolutely insane. If I called in advance to get my boat hauled, and did what you did getting there, I would have completely gone berserker on them.. In a way it's difficult to say if you're to nice or if you're smart enough to just walk away from a mess. I've experienced travelling that I'm not taken seriously if I'm not very confrontative and "complaining". Anyways, hope everything works out and good travels!

Delivered a Lagoon 44 from Lanzarote to France once and battled through weeks of terrible weather and storms, we found out the hard way that we'd dropped a prop somewhere mid journey (dual engines) we tried berthing on a pontoon faced with tyres as fenders and managed to hit the only spot where there was a missing tyre, impaling the hull on an exposed metal bolt where once a tyre had been secured. I woulda spat my dummy out having to go through all that Sam... amazing skill and patience there.

I feel you man. I bought a😮 sailboat 3 weeks ago, did 11 hours of work on it a day for 2 weeks. Got two good sailing days before the old yanmar yse 12, kind of exploded the oil in the very badly accessible engineroom, and the keel was filled up with oil. I had dived down in the icecold water scraping all the white growth off the 3 blade propeller. Now trapped in a harbour with winds up to 30 m/s and no protection. Yes, engines are the worst. It is ridiculous with those big fancy sailboats using engine in such great wind.
