Phillip Brady was in Newton's Don Lane Show dressing-room with Bob Hope in 1973 (not correct year), watching Newton and Lane on the monitor as Hope waited to go on. Brady recalls: "Bob Hope said to me: 'Bert's funnier than I am. I've got a team of 20 gag writers but he does it off the cuff.'" Brady has no doubt Hope meant it.

The first time I’ve seen Bob Hope talk without a script. He’s great. So easy to talk to. I thought I’d seen all the Don Lane shows but not that one. All three greats gone. We going to miss you Bert. RIP. Xx

Bert Newton who recently left this world, was a great natural entertainer. He had a super persona which drew everyone to him. As new immigrants we watched the Don Lane show twice a week which ran from 1975 - 1983. This show, above all else, was one filled with the very competent flair of Don Lane, but complemented hugely by Bert Newton. In this clip, Bert is a complete and confident ambassador for Australia. He does not in any way fawn before Bob Hope who was a legend in his own right. Every Australian should follow his example in being people from a great land down under. Rest on Peace Bert.
