They need to do a tv series for Bob, because his story is too extensive to just leave it at a movie.

The movie was about the circumstances of Bob creating his greatest album, EXODUS. The story was told from Ziggy's perspective. He can’t very well talk about Bob and Rita's extra-marital affairs without insulting or hurting his siblings who were born outside of the marriage.

The crazy part about it is that the woman that played Rita is of Jamaican descent. Kingsley is of Trinidadian descent and he sounded closer to a real Jamaican.

I’m not Jamaican, but I can’t tell you how many times I cried throughout the movie. Sometimes in Hollywood, there’s a lot of sacrifice in authenticity when dealing with reality based stories in or order to communicate to the masses. Which is ultimately more than what Bob Marley would have wanted. There’s plenty of documentaries on him to get the real deal. But Hollywood, with significant help from Ziggy and Rita, found all the right people to deliver Bob’s message not just to the beautiful land of Jamaica, but also to the rest of the world!

Kingsley Ben-Adir did an excellent job in his protrayal of Bob Marley.

Ari doesn’t read or something? This movie isn’t a beginning to death story. It focuses only on two years (1976-78) with some flash backs to his younger years from some context. I liked the movie for what it was but to tell Bob full story he’d need a 8 part series.

Perhaps "One Love" is a movie about Rita's love for Bob as well as things from her perspective and experiences. It may not be a Biopic .

It was an amazing movie the writing was on point. The message was well represented and one should watch the movie before listening to the negative commentary.

8.5/10 for me as a Jamaican/Canadian. I was surprised how they really said some things in there that even the white ppl in the movie theatre was uncomfortable lol like saying fi dem God is not no white mon. The movie was good, accents were good surprising on Kingsley’s part. Storytelling was good but couldve been better. Just like Tupac, Bob Marley has way too many things in his life to unpack in less than 2hrs. If you wanted to see how much BUN Bob did ah give Rita den you would of had ppl complain same weh dat dem ah try fi tarnish di mon legacy.

Sounds like they need to do a Netflix limited series to fully capture everything....its a lot to cram into 1hr and 43mins

For all those criticizing what was left out of this film. They chose to concentrate on just a very few years. Rather than criticize the filmmakers for what they left out of Bob's life (which probably would have resulted in a much much longer film that would have severely taxed the viewers attention span if they had gone into detail) I think it's better to critique exactly what was on the screen. Some find the results wonderful, others not so great.

What we need to bear in mind is that a lot of people who were involved in the film process were with both during that time in his life and know exactly how things transpired so I didn’t make sense they add things for dramatic flair that just didn’t happen irl

The movie was good period.

It’s really interesting because the British black actors have taken over. They seem to get the American accent better than the Jamaican patio. The Lady that played Rita accent wasn’t top notched but she embodied the the person and evoked the emotions.

The movie felt rushed, as there were many important moments in Bob Marley's life that couldn't be covered in just an hour and a half. It missed a golden opportunity, similar to the Tupac movie.

Not sure why some viewers are projecting their assumptions about what the movie should have been about versus what it was INTENDED to be. It deliberately covers only 2 years of his life. How you all wanted all his affairs, records and concerts etc to rammed into that is beyond me. Also if anyone thinks Bob was defined by being carefree, you may likely be one of those fake foreign fans who probably has "Three Little Birds" on repeat and thinks that represents who Bob was in totality. Bob, as many who were actually close to him have confirmed as well as video and voice recordings in his own words have articulated, was very introspective and often somber because he felt a weight to find and live his purpose. People like to think he was a happy little Jamaican here to skip around in a joyful weed-induced high forever on stage for their entertainment. When he found out he has cancer, he sat in the studio for hours alone strumming and singing "I'm Hurting Inside", a song many false fans don't even know because it wasn't all happy and boppy. Just like "Cornerstone" which he wrote about the rejection he experienced by his father. So. All the griping about the movie not being about how great of a superstar he was, or giving us deep details about all his love affairs... if y'all want that, then go Google the hundreds of articles and videos that cover those aspects of his life to the point of exhaustion. THIS film was about what happened to cause his music to evolve and become what was on the Exodus album and him accepting his purpose as well as his mortality and addressing the fact that his connection to Rita went past the romantic phase of their relationship. His affairs were acknowledged in the argument scene, as were her own infidelities. And Cindy was represented in the film but keep it real, it was Rita and her kids who led this production so, if they want to focus on the complex but genuine ties between Rita and Bob, what's the issue? Also, Rita has said, many times, that over the years as they got more mature, the romantic side of their dynamic faded but the LOVE stayed. That scene between them in England when they argued, it was more about her holding him accountable for losing his anchor and getting caught up to the point that he couldn't see the kind of devious characters surrounding him. It wasn't about two lovers in some petty tiff. It was two best friends venting and speaking their acid truths to each other. To one of the presenters, Bob did cry in the scene where he was upstairs alone. He was in the shadows but he did in fact cry. Anyone who wants a deep dive into baby mama drama land needs to leave this amazing biopic alone and go watch Love & Hip Hop or Paternity Court. If you wanted to see a movie that makes you feel all light and bubbly inside, I think My Little Ponies may be up your alley cuz you SURE aren't ready for Bob Marley's journey. GREAT Movie!! Be prepared for the CONTEXT it was made in and you will have an amazing viewing experience. Full Stop. Jamaica, you produced an amazing legend of a man. I liked the movie- except how they resolved the gun man situation. Also, I realize it was smart to focus on this part of Bob's life and not give too much- can't give Babylon too much. But they really troll Cindy with this movie, her character is barely in it and then her song "Turn The Lights..." is implied that Bob wrote it for Rita- LOL! I liked the movie though- if people want more there are many documentaries they can check. One Love!

7:45 best way to put it I am a born and raised in Puerto Rico but my father was a huge Bob Marley fan so growing up the English was pretty simple to understand but watching the movie in some Dialogues I was easily lost but then fall back into it but definitely loved the film truly felt the love he was trying to put out

I saw the movie last night in NYC and completely agree with your review. After listening to Ziggy promoting the film, I had expected more. Anyway, it was still enjoyable.

Ari the part about Bob and Rita not connecting in england...that's what it was in fact. From what you were saying that was intrictly Bob at least from what I know of him. He is not that emotional thevway you wanted him to be...like most Jamaican ghetto youth actually. He was a gallist more involved and emotes by the music. He would not be anything like Ray. As java say 104 mins that what you were looking for would be difficult to capture. Just like most ja man with multiply kids they just pop up with the father at various occasions without the baby mothers. That you will not see ...he was not that into the many kids on a day to day basis. I know want to watch the movie.

I think they humanized his reaction to his illness to me. I secluded himself Rita had to come to his rescue. When he was talking to Chris Blackwell he was obviously broken to the point where he told Chris to leave him. So I don't agree with Ari on that point.

Spirit Father on horse took over inspired Bob's message of peace love unity in a world of power hungry desparate for status people mongst glimpses of tenderness heartache pain music constant cindy standing outside in the cold rita constant even when physically absent country pickney become magnet to millions worldwide through the aura of his message carried on great rhythm blues pop reggae rock steady melodies...on and on... Actors delivered lya. Touched l soul in a real way.

As a non Jamaican I appreciate this perspective a lot. I loved the film but it’s great that so many Jamaican’s felt well enough represented. I can assume that since I could understand all of the dialogue as an American that the patois had to be toned down.

I wish that Plan B Entertainment, State Street Pictures, and Tuff Gong Pictures would've went all out with coverage of the premier of this movie. Why wasn’t there a red carpet event at any of Jamaica’s 21 movie theaters? Imagine how much excitement you would have had if we were to have your Prime Minister, Lady Saw, Usain Bolt, Bounty Killer, or who's who at a special screening? We shouldve been there to support our our own and to set a precedent for the world to see that this man came from this tiny place.

A series should have produced, rather a movie as to integrate other aspects too such as the children and other children who has never come forward to claimed him as daddy, the wife and only wife, the mistresses & babies mother's; the friends and family, more studio sessions and music with the wailers and other artist who was there and a intricate voice in the marley legacy. No one can disagree with the love that Bob & Rita has, plus when the music and PR publicity came into fame, the gatekeepers of the gatekeepers told him to limit the talk about marriage and bringing cindy around him moreso to give off the international appeal and acceptance. For if Rita was to be in the limelight, the Bob Marley legacy would not be like it is today. Many people sacrifice their lives and souls to apease and sell out.

A few things, the girls seem conflicted, they want the movie the way they think it should be , they kept comparing to Ray Charles but they are two different stories, two different characters, but as a huge fan of Bob it captured who he was. A man strong in faith, belief and feared no one.... and another thing, that was how Don T spoke, he was born in Ja but went away at a young age before coming back to Ja for a while.. A good book to read to understand Bob as a father is "Dear Dad" by Ky-mani Marley, you'll probably understand why other kids weren't in the movie. Great movie!!!

I feel like it needed to be a trilogy. Early life, rise to fame then the latter part of his life. The problem with the film is that you really need to be educated in bobs life and the Rastafarian lifestyle and beliefs for things to make sense or at least before people go to watch this movie watch the film “Marley” 2012. For instance. Growing up I watched every single interview and documentary on bob marley over a ten year span. So when the “man” on the horse caught up with bob in the film. I felt overwhelmed coz I understand the significance of who is was (sorry trying not to give spoilers away lol). It brought tears to me eyes. Not one other person I know understood. I think they needed to cast bob perfect regardless of where the actor from. If they best man to play him live in uk, Germany, America or Jamaica they needed to choose who fit the role perfectly. I think the casting of bob and young bob was phenomenal. I think they tried to make the actors easier to understand. I seen lots of people say it needed subtitles because they couldn’t understand the actors. I think a lot of of people in the uk could understand because Jamaica is so rooted in our culture. When Jamaicans came to work the docks along side the working class white boys they brung with them their style, music, slang and culture. The result of that was multiple subcultures through out the uk. The two tone, skinhead, rude boy era came about. Resulting in Englands love for reggae and ska music. Young Rita’s accent sounded to me not to good but that’s just my opinion. There’s so much more I wanted to see. I wasn’t disappointed but I would of definitely loved more and for things not to been skimmed over. Over all I think it did something that was needed. It made bob more then just women and marijuana. About 8 years ago I came to Jamaica and went to the museum, that’s all our tour guard spoke about. Was how he loved women and weed. It disappointed me. I’m stood there thinking this is the only man to ever live that stopped a war though music and love and here this man is stood in bobs mothers tomb talking about her sons “strong member”. I’m glad the world will now see this man for what he is. Regardless of multiple women and burning herb. Which is a real life legend. They didn’t hit the target imo but they hit the board. The family will always avoid certain things when it comes to their father, I think due to the awkwardness and not wanting to shit on the brand. They did well.

Read the book “catch a fire”…study Jamaica in the years he was living there. Study Rastafarian beliefs… Why we always want everything laid at our feet? We get to study. I like how the spirit of Jah dominated in what the movie gave. No Hollywood BS. Contemplating, devotion, faith and action. Love dominates. Rita reminds him of Jah’s power in him and to continue to carry the message. No world mind. Jah mind. In human experience. 🔥

At least one of the leading stars should have been Jamaican. Spice could have played Rita Marley. Ideally both leading roles should have been Jamaican actors, which would have given 100% authenticity, the global audience would have loved it because, there would have been a good language balance between Jamaican and English; but above all, this would have created two global superstar Jamaican actors, which hadn't happened since Jimmy Cliff in "the harder they come". The makers of the movie wanted to make the movie without positively impacting the Jamaican movie industry. There needs to be another Bob Marley movie in a few years, this time doing the right thing.

However, since the tales of the Bible was grated from much older scripts from the Kushite Civilizations (Mesopotamian Empires, Egypt, Nubia, India, Levant etc.) we can say that Bob was actually the embodiment of King Asar (Osiris) and Heru-pa-hered (Horus the child). The Messiah or Christ (Jesus) of the bible was never supposed to have been an orator like a Pastor. The Old Testament stated the Messiah was to come as a Musician. In biblical days they were no such words for a "Poet" so they label them as "Prophet". This is Matthews fulfillment of Jesus Psalm 78:2 "I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter (naba=sing by inspiration) dark sayings of old" Yet in another Psalms having the same connotations of Psalm 78 "He" is using a musical instrument to bring forth his parables just like the "Proverbial Bob Marley". Psa. 49:4 "I will incline mine ear to a parable: I will open my dark saying upon the harp (guitar)."

It was a different type of love as they got older. They were not in a romantic relationship as they got older and that was clear in the movie.

Lower your expectations when going to see this film

I am going to see the movie tomorrow…but I think the movie probably didn’t dive into certain topics because of which Marley children were leading the project. In order to parse out Bob the man who had all these extramarital affairs - it would require them include info that they may feel would hurt or disrespect their mother. But I agree that (based on what I have heard) if these topics had been examined it would have made a movie with real depth. I agree with Ari and Naro - the family’s involvement probably gave authenticity to his mannerisms but sanitized him as a person. But the unadulterated truth is what makes a movie great and authentic. On another note: I disagree that we need to soften accents for global ears. There are award winning movies that highlight other cultures where the actors are from the country of origin and they cut no corners with language. To the point where there are subtitles. People love Bob - they would have and could have adjusted. And the truth is global ears would have been fine with authentic accents. They were trying to appeal to American ears smh…
