Bob McAdoo skills were still sharp when he finally donned the purple and gold, and the former MVP was an integral part of the first half of the Showtime dynasty. Statlines like "14 and 5 in 15 minutes" were common for Big Mac, as he came off the bench and toasted reserves on a nightly basis.
Footage found on NonPlayerZealot4, Torontos, OldGoldenThroat, Karol K, and Lakeptics' channels.

It took over a year, but I finally finished my Bob McAdoo video. There wasn't enough footage of his Braves career to make satisfactory video about that era, but there was more than enough footage of his Lakers days. Bob McAdoo was a revolutionary figure in NBA history. There have been jumpshooting big men since the beginning of the NBA. But Big Mac was the first one who could hit shots off the dribble. He had a array of hesitations, spins, fakes, and crossovers that he used to make space. While McAdoo had slowed down considerably by the time he went to LA, he was still good enough to torch bench units (and Larry Bird) as a super-sub off of the bench. As always, please let me know who you'd like to see next! I'll try to work on another football video as well, but let me know which basketball star you'd like to see too! PS: Dear nonplayerzealot4, I gave you a shout out in the description box, since I used some footage from your channel.

How McAdoo isn't on the 50th greatest players is so disrespectful. Rookie of the year, multiple scoring titles multiple M.V.P. trophys and two championship. I remember Mac would score 40 on Cap when they went head to head. I always went to the games when Buffalo came to the Chicago Stadium .This dude was better or just as good as everyone on that list. Not just big men but everybody. Pat Riley and Kareem Abdul Jabbar called Doo the greatest outside shooter in history. I know he's the most underrated player in history. Prime McAdoo was unguardible. He Also was a excellent defender, shot blocker and rebounder.

Pat Riley's use of McAdoo was brilliant, playing him only 15 -20 min a night allowed Bob the opportunity to play and keep his injuries in check. When he was on the floor the entire game changed as every play revolved around Bob putting up numbers. Bob often got standing ovations just waiting to come into games - everyone knew what was going to happen. If the Lakers were down 5 - Bob would often sit down with them up 10 - it was night after night he just dominated.

Very good point about limited minutes re injuries. That was Mac's kryptonite: he got hurt a lot, and then, because he was a competitor, he tried to play through it, and in Detroit that was awful. But to have him coming off the bench for 15-20 was amazing.

How discouraging it must have been for teams that managed to hold the Lakers in check only to have that guy come off the bench and just light them up. McAdoo probably turned a lot of would be Laker defeats into victories. Talk about a secret weapon!
@James92028

Wasn't a secret, everyone in the stands got on their feet every time Pat Riley put him in - Bob would not have survived the grind of 40 min a night as a starter - but for 15 min he left it out there. As soon a he came in the whole style of play changed - Mac was a Jordan like player - and everyone knew to just get him the ball and try to screen someone.

In spite of all the points he scored and the baskets he made, his most famous play is when he ran the length of the court and blocked Dr. J in game 6 of the 82 finals. He finally got his first of two rings. I remember the day and was very excited back in the early 80s when I first heard then first year head coach Pat Riley traded for MCAdoo. I wish he could have played for the Lakers starting in 80. Marvelous player.

The 82 and 85 Showtime Lakers would mop the floor with any of Jordan's championship teams. They had McAdoo coming off the bench.

While all the emphasis here is on scoring, Mcadoo was an excellent defender and rebounder. IMO, he was one of the most complete ballers the game has seen.

I think the young Bob McAdoo could have hung with Kevin McHale, but not the 1980s McAdoo. By then, he had lost a lot of his lateral quickness and bounce, and there was a hesitation in his shot that hadn't been there before. But in 1982, he killed it, and the young McAdoo was indeed comparable to Durant.

Durant reminds me of Mcadoo. He could score from anywhere. When he was with the Braves it was kinda like Durant in OKC. But he did not have a Westbrook. P.S. Some young NBA fans wouldn't believe Buffalo had a team. LOL. Great videos. How do you get them? Keep up the good work.

He would be perfect at the four. He really could score anywhere within the three line. He could shoot, score in the post, and drive. Not an excellent defender, passer, nor rebounder but he wasn’t bad at it. I believe he would develop a decent three today (around 34% for a big on low volume). Which would make his game even better.

@Notorious1503 He didn't pass very much, but he wasn't there to facilitate. McAdoo's role was to score in bunches in the 15-20 minutes he got off the bench each game, even if that meant hogging the ball from time to time.
